his eyes slightly widen when she takes his hand. but the momentary surprise easily transforms into relief. it's a good sign that he has learned not to take for granted. saskia's alert enough to notice her surroundings; even better, she's willing to accept the help offered.
her wound steals his attention. another moment of surprise, this time echoed by a soft hum. light fingers press against the torn clothes to peer at the how the bullet lodged into carbon fiber. curiosity rips through them at lightning speed; questions bubbling on their tongue, scenarios of what-ifs for friends dead, and wonder if saskia chose this as a precaution.
but he stills every thought. saskia never gave explicit permission to take her pain. just a flesh wound --- a blessing, but still a wound that he could help ease. and yet ----
"you're welcome. i'm glad i was nearby." a beat, then another, hesitation dancing across their face. but they squeeze her hand back. slowly tugs at the thread that pulls at her pain as they release their own suppression. the pain thrums at their stomach, a dull ache. not carrying the full weight of what saskia feels, but enough to alert her. to wonder, if she wants them to take it all. "any better?"
saskia knows intrigue when she sees it and she can see it now, in ryojiâs gaze when he looks at her wound, at the well constructed armor doing precisely what it was designed to do. she canât tell what heâs thinking but she assumes itâs much of what everyone else wonders. can you feel that itâs there? yes. does it bother you? yes. why? i didnât want it.
at least she can take comfort in the fact that ryoji doesnât know her well enough to realize her role as a kronos pr pet. or, as she prefers, pr pest.
all thoughts of that dissipate when she feels her pain lessen - mind whirring to connect the dots in only a few seconds. heâd squeezed her hand, things didnât hurt quite as much. enough pain taken to clear her mind some, to let thoughts churn faster and focus on other things. namely that heâs not just a vigilante, but a super.
saskiaâs eyes narrow, giving him a once over thatâs equal parts suspicious and curious - a scientist through and through. âwhere does it go?â into him, surely, but then - what? it makes her think of the paragon super, saint peter. a healer. but this is different. pain has to be like energy, taking it doesnât get rid of it. âwhat do you do with it?â
delphine flicks her eyes back to saskia. her smile cuts across her face. "poor choice of food, given the circumstances. but the nsa should take some time on this. after all, i want to win."
there's no official betting pool, nothing more than bragging rights if her prediction is correct, but delphine wants it regardless. the more bodies she can examine, the further she can take her research, and the stronger she can become in breaking cecil's chains on her.
as if reading her thoughts, saskia turns the conversation to her dear family member. "cecil remains tight-lipped as always. wouldn't be surprised if they've managed to grab the fake and examine it in their labs by now."
popping her knuckles --- from pinky to index, twice over --- she asks, "and what about buchanan? surely he had some directions for the team leads, no?"
winning, losing - saskia doesnât particularly care so long as neroâs production gets shut down. thatâs a full scale operation the likes of which she can only begin to imagine. it is, however, plenty of motivation to spur on her own efforts of an anti-serum. something that could get rid of supers once and for all.
even the good ones.
âi wouldâve thought we would have heard from them by now if that were the case.â the nsa has excellent people on their teams, but they are a government entity. the best and brightest minds work for kronos, not for a pithy government pay check with shit hours. if they want to turn this into a jurisdictional pissing contest, societyâs doomed.
she brushes her long braids over her shoulder, cants her head delphineâs way. âboss man wants to make sure the gala fiasco doesnât happen again. heads turning into spaghetti bolognese doesnât really convince the people with deep pockets to want to try it out, yâknow?â saskia could easily point out what the fix is: stop rushing her team. give them time to breathe and understand all the side effects before sending the show ponies out. convincing a billionaire of that, however, is stupidly difficult. âdid the tests on the twins yield anything interesting? any potential answers - besides the obvious.â
his feet carry him to her before he registers his own actions.
a single glance is spared to the perpetrator ( alive, chest slowly rising and falling ), before ryoji's attention is completely devoted to saskia. i'm fine is a statement that still carries blood. as she slides down the wall, he kneels beside her, a hand barely lifted if she needs assistance.
they're not sure she would've accepted it.
gaze flits across her closed eyes to open skin to the hand against her stomach. the urge to remove her hand to view the wound themself thrums under his skin, but he shoves it aside.
"would you let me look at the damage, please?" his tone is careful, soft, as his eyes land on her face again. he's no stranger to understanding the pain rippling through her. "and i --- i can take the pain. if you want. but only if you're okay with it."
is it the worst pain sheâs ever felt?
in the grand scheme of things, no. doesnât mean it hurts any less than it currently does, doesnât mean itâs not an all consuming type of pain that, in the moment, feels like the most pain sheâs ever been in. her hand trembles against her stomach - eyes going in and out of focus as ryoji speaks and she wants to say she doesnât need the help but she canât think straight when everything hurts this much so she relents, takes the hand still offered to her though sheâs seated firmly on the ground with her bloodied one.
doing so reveals the wound on her stomach; stitches will fix it and sheâll look good as new. the carbon fiber armor did itâs job. when she risks a glance down, she can see it shimmering through her blood. it makes her queasy so she puts her head back against the wall and breathes deep through her nose- unaware of how hard sheâs squeezing ryojiâs hand. âsee? iâm fine. just a flesh wound.â she laughs, the sound a little more than desperate, and tries not to think about how pathetic she feels. âitâs.. thank you. for being in the right place at the right time.â
at somewhere public with anyone!
chaos of the fake serum remains an easy prediction. exactly what chaos, and how it will unfold --- that is where the wonder lies.
"so, how long do you think we have to wait until we see heads just --- " her lips press together hard, a sharp pop sounding as a hand extends to the crowd.
"i'm putting my bet in for a week."
it must be something in the royce family gene pool.
that's saskia's conclusion anyways when it comes to delphine and her brothers. she's only met the oldest a handful of times which was more than enough for her to find he sets her teeth on edge; the other brother comes across as a narcissistic manchild.
and then there is delphine.
she's got years of experience on saskia, but she's also her subordinate in the kronos hierarchy. funny how that works.
"ugh, please- that's the last thing i want to think about when i'm having spaghetti for lunch." she makes a face. she spends more time than she cares to think about trying not to think about the consequences of someone making a bootleg of the serum. "i just want the nsa to do their job and get it off the streets before we start seeing it every other day."
a pause. "has cecil said anything to you about that? it feels like he's called his hounds off of us for the whole gala thing at the least after samael."

be it chance or fate, ryoji hears the gunshot. close enough to immediately find the source, and closer still to immediately act.
if they had more time, perhaps he would've thought to activate their mask. act as dolor rather than ryoji. but they're already wearing a regular cloth mask; besides, what did they say before? they tend to immediately act when they see a gun.
he launches at the suspect, slamming to the ground in a tangle of limbs. a hand darts toward the gun, and the suspect leans out of reach. but ryoji's fingers land on open skin, nails digging into the person's wrist.
the person is unconscious within seconds.
ryoji stands with a groan, their suppression taking a moment longer than desired. but they manage to easily snatch the gun and switch the safety on, removing the magazine as they turn to the victim.
"ms. sarkisian?" their brows shoot up, then furrow as their gaze drops to the hand at her midsection. "are you hurt?"
maybe this is one of the reasons the gods or fate or just plain fucking genetics didnât grant saskia super powers. she stood there and did nothing after being attacked. pissed off, but statuesque. pissed off doesnât mean shit if she just stands there. luckily for her standing in one spot pissed off works out well enough when thereâs a good samaritan nearby.Â
âiâm fine.â which is the opposite of true. in a sense. the armor beneath her skin is unblemished. what blood there is comes superficially from the tear in her skin. but that doesnât mean that it doesnât feel like she just got shot. now that the shock of it is wearing off, the pissed off feeling turns into light-headedness and the pain becomes more real.
she stumbles back a step, reaching blindly for a wall to brace herself again and sliding down it until sheâs sat on the ground, hand still pressed to the wound on her stomach and heart pounding in her ears. âiâm- iâm fine. i just.â she closes her eyesand swallows, trying to work past a sudden wave of nauseaand the clamminess she feels. âneed to sit. thatâs all.âÂ
odessa: ugh i'm so sorry
odessa: people are not gonna shut up at work tomorrow too. like you know the answers any better than they do??
odessa: so much for buchanan wanting to be the only one who knows how to make supers
saskia: like? do i look like some omniscient being who knows how this happened? saskia: for all we know it's one of dante's proteges fucking around saskia: or worse
odessa: idk what else it could be unless they're faking it
odessa: but it doesnât look fake??? this is so fucked though
odessa: do u think it's a copycat
saskia: this is soooooo beyond fucked saskia: i'm going to have to go through everything tomorrow to make sure someone didn't sneak a vial out and security is already blowing up my phone saskia: but it definitely has to be a copycat. there's no way it's the legit thing.

where: a dark street who: open!
the bulletâs impact knocks her backwards and the only thing stopping her from ending up on her ass is a quick hand grabbing onto the street lamp for support. one hand, out of instinct, flies to her midsection but thereâs minimal damage. not like there would be if this had been more than four years ago. her fingertips touch the armor weave embedded beneath her skin. unblemished. the fact that sheâs not sprawled out on the ground, bleeding to death before her would-be mugger, doesnât surprise her so much as it does them - frozen in place as she spits out an indignant âwhat the fuck is wrong with you?â before a super careens into them, sending them sprawling.

"The only answer." The repetition is flat, unconvinced, although Emerald doesn't mean to believe Saskia is lying by any circumstance. None of what's happened has made any sense when the text jumps off the paper. In the reports the mishap is simple: cheating the system works when you have money. Emerald Savoya should know that by now.
"Legally they're adults, but they're still kids. To cheat the background checks, they could not have done it alone. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, Ms. Sarkisian, but I think it's within our best interest to open investigation regardless."
âplease. they were grifters from the outskirts of novus. it happens.â if she hadnât been there, hadnât seen it all with her own eyes, saskiaâs nonchalance would be fitting. instead, itâs practiced. the kronos pr department worked overtime to come up with the perfect answer for any question that could ever be thought and sheâs memorized everything she needs to know. gone over it again and again until the worlds felt natural falling from her lips.
she regards the nsa officer coolly. a pretty woman in a vibrant red dress on the arm of cecil royce who, notoriously, avoids societal functions if saskia remembers correctly, emerald savoya comes from her own wealthy family. something to keep in mind, to redirect the conversation if she needs to.. âyou work for a government agency. surely the nsa has run into their fair share of people who lie and cheat to advance themselves. the same thing happened here and itâs unfortunate, ms savoya, but shouldnât the real investigation be into how many nsa-sponsored heroes failed to save the senator?â
suzu mimes a two-fingered salute, starting on just exactly that. itâs not exactly what she included in her plans for tonight, but sheâs adaptable, and janitorial work just so happens to be one of the many, many contract jobs sheâs held prior to her work at lux. itâs a good way to take a look around the labs without rousing suspicion, and she busies herself with taking out trash as a circular robot takes to the floors.Â
she canât help but glance at saskiaâs tablet as she passes by, but as valuable as whatever might be on her screen is, she doesnât understand it. nothing clicks in her mind; itâs simply a string of indecipherable equations and confusing diagrams to her. what she does understand, however, is saskiaâs distracted tone. she can work with this. âstuck on something? it is late,â queries suzu lightly with a touch of sympathy, tossing someoneâs old take-out box into her cart. part of her wonders how much saskia will divulge to a stranger, even one that works in her building. âdonât remember the name, honestly. it was hard enough trying to remember where everything is. i swear, itâs a maze in here,â she replies sheepishly. she did see a carter on the list of employees, but better to play it safe. âyou still ever get lost?â
âwhich probably accounts for the being stuck aspect.âlately, she always feels like sheâs stuck on something. stuck trying to create something that could truly and actually level the playing field for regular people. stuck trying to convince her so-called superiors that their idea is terrible and rushed through and not at all well thought out. none of them have had the nerves - not even a singular sheepish nerve - to admit to her that she had been right. putting the twins out there so soon had been a mistake.
but not even the strongest super alive can rival the power of the kronos pr machine.
saskia takes a sip of her tea and watches kairi clean, enjoying the warmth from the mug radiating through her palms. âevery hall looks the exact the same as the others when you first start,â she agrees. âat least hospitals have colored lines guiding you.â colored lines would make kronos look less pristine. would make it look more inviting than it is. she watched plenty of talented individuals wash out of internships and jobs alike; thereâs a certain ruthlessness you have to have to work for robert buchanan.
âyou can scan your id on the touch pad next to the elevator and itâll give you a map projection of the building. shadowed areas you wonât have access to, highlighted ones you can go. that fact saved my butt during my internship, actually. which feels like a lifetime ago if iâm being honest.â saskia glances over at jjâs work station before looking back to kairi. âin a way, it was. things were crazy different three years ago. you know?â
âI will be a little god in my small way.â
â Sylvia Plath, from The Unabridged Journals Of Sylvia Plath (via accidentofhope)
where: an elevator for the laughs who: @couverts / baz!
itâs a bad movie cliche - to be stuck between floors in an elevator with someone you donât like because thereâs a power outage. the fact that in novus 2040 thatâs still an issue completely baffles saskia. technologically, they should have moved past this - should have long since ensured it doesnât happen anymore. but it does and sheâs stuck here. with sebastian because of course itâs sebastian. âthey said itâll take an hour.â she hangs up the elevator phone, archaic piece of junk that it is but useful considering elevators still block phone signals, and unwraps a piece of gum without offering him a piece. dropping her bag to the floor, she sits next to it. âhowâs your mom?â
âgod, thatâd be a nightmare. you think itâd be some new kind of species? but thanks so much. i really appreciate it.â suzu smiles gratefully as she follows saskia into the labs. over a decade ago, it would have shocked her at how easy it is to slip in where you donât belong, but this sort of job feels like coming home. her repertoire has widened since girlhood, but wearing someone elseâs face and adopting their mannerisms will always be some of the first tricks sheâs ever learned. âdamn, you deserve some kind of bonus after all this blows over, really.â
sharp gaze scans white walls and humming devices, the sterility unnerving. itâs nothing like the alleyways of novus, a haphazard collection of crooked buildings and flickering neon lights; everything here has its proper place. crisp, clear, cutting. âso, what exactly should i definitely not touch?â she asks, gloved hands resting on the janitorial cart. âthe guy who showed me around was kind of lazy about showing me the ropes, said thatâs why we have robots. but theyâre not going to make sure all the corners are done, you know? automation only gets you so far, or something like that.â
âmaybe not a new species, but something that shouldnât be sentient and suddenly is,â saskia replies over her shoulder as she leads the way in. she shudders a little at the thought. thereâs not telling what, exactly, could come out of this lab if she and her team werenât incredibly careful. miracles could happen by accident but disasters were so much more likely. she didnât want to be the one responsible for another omnidroid-esque catastrophe.
saskia sits at one of the tables, taking advantage of her newfound company to give herself a much needed break. both her head and her eyes will thank her tomorrow. âdonât touch anything on the tables or counters. itâs really just the trash and the floors that need to be done.â taking a sip of her tea, her eyes fall to her tablet and she unlocks it - unable to keep herself from looking at her work. from puzzling over the things that donât add up, that keep going wrong. âi wonât be in your way, will i? just let me know and i can move as you need me to.â thereâs a distracted quality to her tone. her problems are staring her in the face but she canât put her finger on where things go wrong.with a heavy sigh, she tears her gaze away. âwas it carter who trained you? heâs such a waste.â

their brows raise. curiosity rewarded him a chance meeting with the source of the serum. better news compared to buchanan's show.
"ryoji." he links hands with hers for a steady handshake. "a pleasure, saskia. this is my lucky night to meet one of the actual masterminds behind tonight's surprise."
when they withdraw, they purse their lips. "i didn't put my foot in my mouth earlier, right? because that critique was a shot at your boss, not your team."
âflatterer.â sheâs not insulted and it shows in her tone. how could she be? theyâre completely correct in their statement; robert buchanan couldnât have pulled this serum out of his ass without her even if he paid millions on other scientists. taking a sip of her peach gin fizz, saskia shakes her head slightly - dismissively - and sends her floor length braids rippling. âno, itâs fine. iâm not a very thin-skinned person, but i am very protective of my team. we worked incredibly hard for him to have his night impressing the suits out there. a little more recognition would be nice, but most of them donât want that spotlight and theyâre not going to brag about it either.â
she shrugs a little. âwhat do you do?"
