It’s a rare thing for him, when composure slips.

He’s not one for social media. It’s never really been his thing, keeping up with other people’s lives. He’s always been so focused on his own. Eat, sleep, train, repeat. He had dedicated his life to his sport. The public loved him for it, and he loved them right back. But admittedly, all work and no play sometimes left him feeling a little empty. In spite of the outpour of love he received from people, he knew it was all conditional, dependent on his performance. Opinions could quickly change if he didn’t deliver. He had spent so much of his time focusing on his career that his personal life suffered. Adored and respected as he was, sometimes he felt like a product, like a machine. 

It happened during one of your morning walks together. You somehow managed to convince him to download Instagram. He made a secret, privated account, completely separate from the public one dedicated to his philanthropic pursuits. He followed you and a handful of other close friends without posting a single photo of his own. 

Posting wasn’t the point.

Keeping up with you was.

You had taken some distance from Sidney the past few months, ever since you got yourself a boyfriend. This was typically the case whenever you started seeing someone new. He hated to think it was intentional. He preferred to think you were absorbed by the novelty of it all. In the throes of the honeymoon phase, distracted by your shiny new toy. And part of that was true. You were caught up in something new. 

But that wasn’t the full story. 

He hated to think you were purposefully creating space from him, but the reality of the situation was undeniable. The distance was, in fact, intentional. You explained it to him one night, tipsy. Unprompted. He never broached the subject with you first. He respected you too much, and he didn’t want to seem needy, or entitled.

“You know I love you, Sid,” you had said. You leaned into him. Warm, relaxed—always relaxed, with him. “But I have to make room for other people, too.”

Sidney knew all about optics. He lived his life in public, under a microscope. The rational part of himself—the part of himself he wore more often than not, the part that fit him like a glove, the part that people knew him by—understood it completely. A man hopelessly in love with his childhood best friend. You were oblivious to it, of course, or at least pretended to be. But other people took notice, your past partners especially. The overbearing best friend. You wanted this new relationship to work, and he got it. He got it. 

Even still. It hurt.

You didn’t call him as often. You let hours go by without answering his texts. You were hard to pin down, suddenly too busy for your morning walks, for your coffee runs. Whenever you started seeing someone and pulled your disappearing act, he began to truly question the meaning of the term, “best friend.” He hated that he doubted you in that way. He hated that he resented you. 

He hated himself for it.

Golden boys weren’t supposed to get jealous. 

As he scrolled through your photos, he felt a peculiar mixture of fondness, nostalgia, and something else. 

Something good men weren’t supposed to feel. 

He loved seeing your smile. He loved seeing all the little things you dubbed worthy of sharing, photos of your dogs, a plant you recently killed, some oddly shaped rocks on the beach. There was an old post he loved to look at in particular, one he had to really scroll to find. A photo strip of the two of you from some random photo booth you’d discovered while you were out. Laughing side by side. You and Sid. 

Always you and Sid.

But then one day, you started posting photos with him. A new man. A stranger. He wasn’t anything special, an average man with an average job. More importantly, this man hadn’t known you his whole life. Not like Sidney had. He hadn’t invested the time in you that Sidney had. 

And yet, you were posting him.

It made his chest ache.

As he laid in bed, his eyes wandered over to his nightstand. It was littered with all things you. A framed photo of the two of you, a watch you’d gotten him for his birthday several years back. A pair of earrings you’d taken off when you’d stayed the night a few months ago. He let you sleep in his bed while he slept out on the couch, ever the gentleman. 

But he wanted more. 

God, he wanted more.

More of your things scattered around. More of you there, more evidence that you cared about him, too.

He doesn’t know why he can’t just tell you. He wants to tell you. Needs to. It’s killing him inside, the longer he goes without saying anything. But the idea that you could reject him, that he could possibly lose you just because he can’t control his emotions, is nothing short of terrifying. And so, he remains in a state of paralysis.

About six months into your new relationship, you got cheated on. Dumped. You were devastated, and the distance between you and Sidney only seemed to increase from there. You could get like that when you were sad. You had the tendency to isolate yourself, to cut yourself off from the people who loved you most. But Sidney respected you, and so, he gave you the space you so desired.

His eyes widened as he received a notification one morning, months down the line. 

A DM from you, a stupid meme poking fun at people who prided themselves on not having social media. You sent a message beneath it.

How does it feel, no longer living under a rock?

He smiled at his phone. Typed back.

Have you ever heard of doomscrolling?

I practically invented it.

Yeah, well. You created a monster.

Then came an incoming call.

“Well hello, stranger,” he chuckled.

“Hey, you,” you said. “It’s good to hear your voice.”

“It’s been a while.”

“I knew you would love Instagram,” you said proudly, firm in your conviction. “Now I just have to get you to actually post something.”

“Post what? I’m boring,” he said simply. Honestly. Maybe that was why you never showed any interest in him.

You scoffed. “You’re not boring, Sid.”

“All I do is train.”

“Please,” you scoffed. “You do a lot more than just train.”

“Like recover from training, you mean?”

“You’re dedicated to what you do. That’s not boring,” you said. “And besides, there’s more to you than just hockey, you know.”

“Right,” he chuckled. And then, flatly, “If you say so.”

“Are you okay?” you asked.

“I’m fine. Why?”

“You don’t sound fine.”

“What do I sound like?”

“I don’t know,” you said. “You don’t…you don’t sound like you.”

“Yeah, well. You haven’t seen me in a while. Maybe you forgot what I sound like.”

You went quiet. 

His heart dropped. The mask had slipped. Luckily, not enough that he couldn’t recover from it. As out of sorts as he had been feeling lately, he never wanted to take it out on you. He never wanted to lash out. You were allowed to want relationships, to create them. It wasn’t your fault he had never come right out and told you how he felt about you. 

“Sid?”

“Yeah?”

“Is something wrong?” you asked. He could picture you then, brow furrowed, concern etched onto your face. You had known him for long enough that you could always tell when he was upset, and when Sidney was upset, you were upset. 

And he hated when you were upset.  

“I’m sorry,” he sighed. “I’m alright. Truly. Just stressed, I guess.”

You went quiet again. He took a breath, ready to speak and fill the silence, but you beat him to the punch.

“I have an idea.”

“Uh oh. Not one of those.”

“Shut up,” you chuckled. “It’s a good one, I swear.”

And it was. 

You had tracked down that old photobooth, practically shoving him inside as you approached. You took updated photos and he begrudgingly posted them, his first post ever. You spent the day together, getting coffee, walking around, stopping at random stores along the way. He got stopped by people as you walked, asked to take pictures with fans. You stopped at a bar, and then another, and another.

The night should end there. He knows that, but you’re having fun. You’re smiling, laughing, and you’re there. There with him, forhim, for the first time in months. You’re both a little drunk by the time you leave and head back to his house. You collapse onto his couch. You reach for him, pulling him down next to you.

He stares at you for a moment.

“What?” you smile up at him. “What’s up, golden boy?” 

It’s a rare thing for him, when composure slips.

In the blink of an eye, he’s surrounding you completely. 

You let out a little gasp as he presses his mouth to yours.

“I’m sorry,” he says emphatically, breathless. “I’m sorry.” 

But he keeps on.

In that instant, he knows he should pry himself off of you. He knows he should tell you he’s sorry for coming at you like that, that he’s not thinking clearly, that he’s drunk. He should tell you that he knows you’re vulnerable, lonely. He should tell you that by kissing him back, you’re looking for comfort in something familiar. But then again, maybe that’s okay, he tells himself. Maybe that’s what you need right now, what you need going forward. Something solid. Something familiar. Someone you know, that knows you, not some stranger, not some man who doesn’t know you, who can’t. Not like him. Not like he does. He would never hurt you. He would never lie to you, or cheat, or leave. 

As you kiss him back, he doesn’t pull back, doesn’t shy away. A dam has broken. He can’t bring himself to pull away from you, not now that he finally has you.

“He didn’t love you. None of them did,” he snaps, his voice breaking as he pushes inside you. You let out another little gasp, digging your nails into his shoulders. You’re overwhelmed, caught off guard by the harshness of it. His words, his movements. It’s uncharacteristic of him, this kind of aggression. 

Then, quieter, softer, he says it. The most honest thing he’s said all night. 

“Not like I could.” He leans his forehead against yours. He stares down at you, pupils blown, eyes glassy. He smiles at you, a nervous smile. Tentative, uncertain, but honest. “Not like I will.“

And you melt into him.
