Pacing in the hospital that day,
I like to think that your soul
tired and departing met his
new fresh unborn soul inside me
for just a moment. He never met you but
I do believe you met him,
just briefly, on your way out, on
your way home.

I will remember this:
The weight of his hand, his knobby knuckles and sharp veins, the strength in them
even when they shook. How he helped build my deck,
build a home, build a family.
The way he forgot his hat. The way he chose a bag to carry
because he liked the fringe. The way he didn't want to trim his eyebrows, liked them
bushy and heavy and wild. The way he leaned his head back and sighed,
hands folded over his stomach. The way he looked at you, sharp
and clear blue eyes.
In my mind, he is always
laughing. It is always summer. The sun
breaks through the leaves, washing us in green
and we glow. It is always just before we part,
the endless moments spinning out as
we delay the inevitability of goodbye, holding on,
holding on, one last story, one last reminder,
one last hug before you go,
just one more. Just one more.
He is always reaching out for me, hat tipped back, saying
don't forget, drive safe, I'll see you
at home. I'll see you soon.
He is always about to say I love you.
I pour myself like glass, like gold
Into any shape that will hold me
There are sister who have sisters and sisters who have brothers and sisters who have siblings and sisters who have been left behind but never stopped being sisters and there are sisters who have given up the mantle and there are sisters-in-law and there are sisters in faith and every single one of these sisters experiences it differently.
I am an older sister to a little brother. That's different from being an older sister to a sister and a younger sister twin older brother and etc and so forth. But we are all sisters.
If my brother and I had not been born to share our genetic code, I don't know that we would have met. I don't know that we would be friends. But I would die for him. I would do anything for him. There is nothing I would not do for my brother. He is carved into the ventricles of my heart, he is in my bone marrow. We don't text and we don't call but he knows that if he needs me I will drop everything, because he's my brother and I am his sister and that matters most, that matters always.

I have loved making music with you for the past 15 years. Your guidance and your fellowship have been wonderful examples for me to follow, then I will continue to strive to be both the musician and person that you have helped shape me to be. I have always admired the joy you found in the world and your fortitude and persistence in facing the world, and the way that you balanced these two. The card you made and gave me and my husband for our wedding still sits on my mantlepiece, and the quote you wrote on it I carry with me: wherever you are, whatever you do, be in love. You are someone whose love is so open and given so freely, and it has been an honor to love and be loved by you.
I've said these words to you many times, but I have never meant them more: may peace be with you.
My grandmother is dying
just a little bit faster than the rest of us. A
lot of things are slower when you're old but not
that. I wanted to write a poem about the grief you feel before
the loss. The pre-grief, preparatory, loving someone who
you know you will have already lost.
But I don't have words. I don't have words. I'm
looking at my grandmother in a hospital bed and a hospital
gown with ports in her arms and bruises I know will linger
for months, the rest of her life maybe, and I'm
listening to her tell me she doesn't want to leave
anything unsaid. I love you, she says, and if there was ever anything I said or did to
hurt you please know. I am sorry. I have loved you so much
and I always will and anything you ever did to hurt
me I have already forgotten. There is only love left, love always,
I don't want you to remember anything but the love.
The love is what mattered, first and foremost and always.
And I'm crying and I'm holding her thin hand
and the grief is there but the love is holding its hand
too. There's a poem in this hospital room and she's holding my hand
and angry with her platelets (plucking fatelets)
and she is dying just a little faster than I am.
I press my hands to your chest, to your flesh,
press into the give of you and let you take
whatever I have left. Sinking like sand
between your ribs, my fingers, your heart,
my hands, my hands, your heart, my hands,
press of fingerprint bruise. Like sand and you
the ocean, washing me away, sinking like a ship
in your chest, your heart, my hands.
Take me and I will give you whatever I have left,
the air from my lungs, your name on my tongue,
my hands, your chest. Like sand. Like waves.
lacuna
there is a part of my heart that talking
cannot touch, that wanting cannot touch, that
hands cannot reach, that was born dark, born missing, born
silent, born wrong. there is a part of my heart that i
only know about from missing it, can see on the map as
a hole, a void, a gap. outlined by the things i know, it remains
a mystery. it remains inside of me. there is a part of my
self that i do not like to talk about. it haunts me, lingers
just beyond my comprehension, runs its shadow along
my spine and watches me shiver when i turn to see
nothing. and yet. and yet.
my heart is beating in my chest, steady and sounding
and i am living, breathing, dancing, singing, reaching, wanting,
touching, speaking, loving, loving, loving, loving
anyway.
I thought to myself, I want
to create, but I have not been sad
enough.
And how beautiful is that, I am
no longer sad enough that the only way out
is words on page, a voice
in the darkness. I am no longer sad
enough to be a poet. Perhaps
I will learn how to write prayers instead.

truth falling heavy from my lips, a stone worn smooth from hiding beneath my tongue, hard and simple and old as time. it's ugly, the truth, hard to swallow, hard to say, hard like stones i have carried for many miles, a weight i bore and bore and bore and bore-- honesty isn't easy. it's hard.
verity // t.m.t // national poetry month, day fourteen
belief is an art, like any art it must be honed--
practice, perfection, etcetera, etcetera.
I spent so many Sundays beneath the stained glass, the
icon's solemn eyes, raising my voice to a god
who may or may not deserve it. but deserve isn't the point,
because it's not about deserving, none of us are deserving,
not really, we are all sinners, are all seeking solace or kindness or
forgiveness or peace. just lost souls searching, all of us fractured,
looking for the light we're supposed to let in.
it's not about deserving, it's about believing.
I think wonder woman said that. I'd like to believe in her,
one perfect woman, born without sin, with a sword and a shield
and a heart big enough to encompass all of humanity, every aching bit of it,
even you, even me. I'd like to think that maybe I could be like her,
willing to give my self to the good work of sacrifice. of belief.
I was not born without sin. I am neither wonder woman nor jesus, i
am as flawed as any other human, a cracked vessel.
but I am seeking my state of grace, that sanctification,
the purification of my imperfect human form
so that I can be like the saints I used to stare at,
immortal in their stained glass,
gently smiling, hands open,
letting the light in.

i spiral outwards from a fixed point, farther away and then nearer again, endlessly, and that fixed point is wherever the people who love me best live. it is where my dog is excited for me to come through the door, where my father claps my back and cooks my favorite meals, where my mother answers questions about me every week because there are so many people who care about me and ask after me even now. my fixed point is where ever there are hearts with my name and face inside them, and i move away and always come back, always return to this place where i am loved, a tether i have no wish to untie, because it whispers to me, endlessly, you are loved, you are loved, you are loved, you are l- and on the mornings when i wake up and my skin is the wrong size and my brain is the wrong shape, there is my tether, like am umbilical cord running back to where my mother sleeps, her heart whispering to mine, always, you are loved, you are loved, you are loved, you are l- my grandmother laughing into the phone, my aunts sending me birthday cards and recipes, my brother calling me at midnight because he knows i will always pick up and help him with anything, will always say it back, you are loved, you are loved, you are loved, you are l- as far as i may roam i know i will always follow it to where i belong, which is there, where a cacophony of voices does not hesitate to say, in a chorus, in a murmur, in a shout: you are loved. you are loved. you are so very, very loved.

be whatever you want to be, my love, everything your heart desires,
everything that sends joy singing in your veins. soak it in, let it fuel you.
revel in your own skin. you should enjoy this life, my darling.
you should enjoy being alive. you should be whatever makes your heart scream.
let your life be a celebration, not a curse. live. live. live.

sunset, the sky goes green-- paints the world with careless fingers, a splash and a smear, artless-- i wish on stars and watch the world glitter, sharp and hard. it does not care about me. i am only one more thing watching the sky. the sun disappears and it all goes dark. until tomorrow, whisper the stars. dark again, until tomorrow.

i take the letters and spin them into words i take the words and they are the warp on which i weft my dreams and this is the way in which i weave poetry verse and song, i cut them tatters and sew them pockets and in this way i dress myself to be more than i was before so that my reality might be made more beautiful by my fiction. the emperor has no clothes because he dreamed them more than he crafted them and i will repeat no man's mistakes. i will wear black like the night sky studded with stars and i will wear white like the waves that never stop kissing the shore and i will never be cold again. i have my dreams and my poems and my pin-pricked fingers and a loom and a plan and i am weaving myself a dress and a map and a magic carpet because why not. why not. i take the letters, scatter them across the skirt of my dress, picked out in shining gold word-thread: w h y n o t

i want to un-learn english because i think i have been indoctrinated into believing words can only mean one thing or perhaps two, but in a static way, a rigid and unyielding way, that create walls where i want only air, only open. i want to rebuild my vocabulary from the ground up, because my instinct is to use the phrase "from the ground up" and maybe if i could be washed clean i could use new words, like i want a fresh foundation, a base that lets me build in different directions, sideways, perpendicular, not just up but out, wider than the spaces between my fingers and the horizon. i want my words unblemished, want "witch" to be something other than a woman in black, a pointed hat, a broomstick. i want witch to mean me and be unafraid to be the witch because i want to redefine witch to be whatever i am now. i want to write poetry with words i have never said aloud, want them to do something other than trip off my tongue. i want words to fly, to fling, to leap, to soar. i want to un-learn english because i want to be like a child understanding for the first time that when i say i am an island that i am not the first person to say they are an island, i want to says new phrases and rediscover how to stitch together syllables into poems. i want to start over. i want to be unsullied by my own assumptions, to be unconstrained by the lessons i absorbed unknowingly. let me speak unpolluted. i want to reinvent.
