I worked in a supermarket for 7 years and I don't think I can understate just how much cleaning you had to do for it to look clean (it very often where not in the places you aren't supposed to see)

True for food service, retail establishments, gyms, outdoor areas, schools, religious buildings, office buildings, hospitals and medical buildings, etc. People usually only notice when a space is NOT clean, meanwhile every time a space is clean it’s only because of the diligent work of janitors, maintenance staff, custodians, parks workers, or volunteers.

something about Toy Story toys is so strange to me. versions of animated characters based on real world toys, turned back into toys that are slightly different than the actual toys. slinky dog with a rubber spiral instead of a classic metal slinky. the porcelain bo peep and cloth woody turned into jointed plastic action figures. when toy story 4 came out and i saw a $30 talking action figure of forky, a character made out of a spork and a pipe cleaner, i stood in the walmart toy aisle staring at it like cameron from ferris bueller's day off staring at that painting in the art museum

I’ll also point out that it’s also not good for writing code for the exact same reasons. Part of working on a codebase is working within established coding patterns and architectural decisions so that other people can easily navigate it. If every single module is written completely differently than, inevitably, when some human has to go in there and fix a bug it becomes much harder since every file is written completely different even if they handle the same problem-space. If one module is completely object oriented and uses class instantiation for everything and another that solves a similar problem is functional programming and relies entirely on pure functions then trying to figure out how they are supposed to work together is infinitely harder than just using one model.

I suspected this might be the case but truth be told I didn't know enough about coding to say either way.

It's funny how in the last couple of years several major social media platforms have quietly removed "this user appears to be a bot" from the list of valid reasons to report a post on their abuse forms. I wonder what might have have motivated that particular change.

If you look at the actual history of the decline of empires, in the vast majority of cases it's less an immediate implosion and more a decades-long slide into geopolitical irrelevance, so it's pretty likely nobody reading this post will live to see the ultimate Fall of the American Empire™, but there's value in being there at the start, too.

(Like, cities burning is a striking image, but in practice that almost never happens on its own, even in the case of open civil war. You generally need foreign invaders taking advantage of a faltering empire's weakness for that, and who exactly are we imagining is going to conduct a land invasion of a US in decline? I think what annoys me about countries like the USA and Russia is that they can't just have internal problems, they need to make it everyone else's problem as well.
