their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!

(unfortunately, with the introduction of mammals to aotearoa, these adaptations are a little less useful...)

Maybe I’m too young for this (29) or it’s because I grew up on the west coast but I never learned any “race science” and have never thought of East Asian people as feminine or black people as masculine. I don’t even mean this in a “I don’t see color” kind of way, I’m just so confused. Like I literally nothing about race as it relates to science in school. Except around melanin production and then later in college breaking down the connection to different features as they relate to the climate people ancestors had to live in.

*the replies are restricted on this post so I’ll just reply here. I didn’t say I’ve never thought specific stereotypes about different races, I also didn’t say that racism isn’t real. I literally was specifically talking about never seeing East Asians as feminine and black people as masculine. I’ve heard other racist stereotypes about each of those groups obviously just not that one.

Why did you think it was appropriate to go on a Black person's post and basically argue that bc you personally never formally learned explicit race science in school as an innocent young West Coast American or heard of these stereotypes, he must be lying that stereotypes about Black people being inherently masculine and East Asians being inherently feminine exist? You are not innocently confused and some kind of brave anti-racist - you are ignorant and doubling down on your ignorance by refusing to listen to Black and East Asian people, many of whom are literally in the notes, talking about this very much being a problem even today.
