âYou must have heard the report by now.â He answered back, twisting off the top of his booze and taking a swing before getting back to stitching âBigoted human assaults quarian, said quarian walks away with a minor flesh wound and the human is left unconscious and waiting for C-Sec retrieval. Tale as old as time. Just my luck it was told on a day that I was out of medi-gel.â
Val hissed in pain as the needle punctured his skin. Thankfully, the booze would likely dull most of the residual pain further down the road. Functional alcoholism had itâs benefits sometimes. âBut enough about my life.â Val smiled weakly, his milk-white eyes meeting hers âHowâs yours? The rest of the badges running you ragged?â
"No, I was off today, planned to go visit a friend, who then ditched me," she said with a shrug, opening the bottle of wine she'd brought for herself and taking a sip, though she almost dropped the bottle when he mentioned some bigoted human attacked him. Fuck. "You're kidding, right? Right in the middle of the Citadel?" Eydis made a mental note to try and find out if that human had been let off lightly. "Should've told me, would've got somethin' for ya."
Eydis winced as she watched how he continued to stitch himself up. "Oh come on, you know I like hearing about your life, much more interesting than mine," the officer resisted the urge to grin. "You know, the usual, handing out justice in a lawless world and all that," she joked. "Mostly just paperwork and Presidium patrol, the boring stuff, almost tempted to follow dad's advice and go back to Earth. But you know he wants that because he doesn't want me 'mingling with' aliens."
"Nah, I'm good-AHG! Keelah." Val responded, wincing in pain for some unknown reason "Really, I'm just taking care of a recent development. Make yourself at hoOW! FUCK!..."
As the sterilization chamber finished it's cycle, Eydis would step into the room to find Val on the bed, his suit off to reveal his blue skin underneath. His body was covered in multiple scars, burns and bullet marks, all likely from his life on Omega. On his back, an omni-tattoo of an avian creature made of fire, rising from ashes. Easy guess what that was. What was most concerning, however, was that he was currently in the middle of stitching up a very recent wound.
"Oh, good, you brought booze." He piped up "Could really use that right now, actually."
"Yeah, you sound great to me," Eydis said, brows furrowed in concern. "What the heck happened to you? I thought you didn't get involved in things anymore."
Her eyes widened at the sight of Val, stitching up a very recent wound. And well, just the fact he was suitless in the first place, she'd never seen a quarian without one, but that seemed to be the thing she was worried about the least. How he'd even managed to survive half of the shit he'd been through was beyond her at this point. At the mention of booze, she took out some dexto whiskey, setting it by his side.
"You know if you needed medical attention I'd have called someone, right?" Eydis said with a sigh, consciously making sure her eyes were on the most recent wound and not any of the old ones. "What did you do, Val?"

Eydis frowned at the sound of his voice, had she come at a bad time? It didn't seem that way, given that he was still going to let her in.
"What can I say? I've always had the most impeccable timing," she joked. The officer let herself in, trying to ignore how odd it felt to simply stride into Val's home, second door to the right, sterilization chamber first. She'd always been decent at following instructions. "Val, you okay? Did I come at a bad time?"

âEy there, Green.â Val greeted, holding up a bottle of dextro-whisky and looking a tad buzzed âJust made a huge leap on a personal project of mine. Care to celebrate with me? Got a bottle of the livo stuff in the cabinet.â
âForgotten my name already?â Eydis teased, a grin on her face. âLet me help myself and weâre down, darling, wanna tell me about the personal project or do I have to get you a little bit more drunk first?â She asked.
thephoenixnomore¡:
âI really wish I could believe that, Eydis.â Val responded as he rested his hands on his mask âI want to be remembered for being an innovator; a revolutionary. Someone who brought positive change to this galaxyâŚbut my past is always gnawing at my brain, telling me that Iâll always be just another scumbag killer with delusions of righteousness.â
âI know that you wonât. It makes you a pretty impossible man to be with, to be honest,â Eydis sighed softly, if she didnât care about him then she mightâve walked away a long time ago. But here she was, trying to persuade him that he was still a decent person and failing every single time. âNo one is perfect, not everyone is some sort of revolutionary, would being ordinary kill you?â
thephoenixnomore¡:
Val let out a depressed sigh as he sat down next to EydisâŚ
ââŚEvery night, itâs the same thing.â He said, looking at his synthetic arm âI live out the same memory in my head. An asari child on the ground, hole in her head and blood pooling out of her, light fading from her eyesâŚand Iâm always the one holding the smoking gun. Every eye on the battlefield suddenly turns toward me, gazes like daggers. I stammer, making every attempt to tell them it was a mistake as the world turns black around meâŚand I wake up in a cold sweat. Every night. Without fail. For years now.
Good people donât have those sorts of dreams, EydisâŚâ
Eydis hated to admit it, but she understood. Her dreams werenât as common as they used to be but she saw her partner often enough, in a pool of his own blood, his hand still outstretched towards her, consoling her as she held her mangled hand. If good people didnât have those sorts of dreams then she didnât want to know what that meant. It had taken years of therapy for her to cope, but ValâOs didnât have that. He just suffered. And fuck that always hurt to see, knowing she couldnât help him in any way hurt even more.
âYouâre a good person, Ne--Val, if you werenât a good person we wouldnât be doing this. You wouldnât feel guilty if you werenât a good person. This wonât mean anything to you but youâre the greatest guy I know.â
thephoenixnomore¡:
âA ex-gang member pretending to be a productive member of society.â Val snarked, plopping a straw into his drink âTruly, I am a quarian Casanova. Green, those words may work in a rehab clinic, but Itâs gonna take way more then a living self-help pamphlet to fix me.â
âAn ex-gang member who actually is a productive member of society. Youâve helped C-Sec out, for godâs sake. You...dumbass man.â She muttered, glancing at her empty glass. âIâd appreciate it if you insult my taste in men, as awful as it is, Mr quarian Casanova.â She rolled her eyes, getting comfortable on the couch, living self-help pamphlet? That was something sheâd have to look into.
thephoenixnomore¡:
âDonât really have time for relationships, Green.â Val responded, passing a glass over to Eydis âToo busy building things and wallowing in self-pity. Not that anyone would want to date someone from the slums of Omega.â
âAh...what a shame,â Eydis mumbled, immediately draining her glass the second he passed it to her. A little over the top? Perhaps. But anything to get over that awkward conversation. âIf you put yourself out there, thereâd be people lining up. Because youâre not just âsomeone from the slums of Omegaâ,â the cop snorted. âYouâre you and thatâs...pretty damn good if you ask me.â

âYou know how hard it is to find a barber shop that serves quarians?â Val chuckled, heading towards his alcohol cabinet âIâd have better luck surviving smallpox.â  Â
Val pulled out two bottles of whisky, one of them dextro, and began to pour them both a glass âManaged to find a new way to clean metal.â He sighed âUnfortunately, thatâs the high bar.âÂ
âAbout as hard as it is to find any sort of shop that serves quarians?â Eydis responded, arching an eyebrow as he made his way towards a cabinet. A sad state of affairs really, as a rather rich human she never really had that problem. And she was damn thankful for it.Â
âSomething I suppose,â the dark-haired woman shrugged, he was always an innovative man and it didnât surprise her that he was still coming up with stuff. âNo tall, dark and mysterious women sweeping you off your feet? Iâm shocked!â
thephoenixnomore¡:
âSolitude ainât all itâs cracked up to be.â Val shrugged âI mean, silver lining, I donât have to look over my shoulder for vengeful mercenaries. So, yeah, counting my frigginâ blessings there.â
âI always thought of you as the lonesome type,â Eydis admitted, honestly, she felt that she annoyed him half the time they were together. âTrue, but Iâm talking new and exciting things. Met anyone new? Come up with anything exciting? Got a haircut?â Not that sheâd be able to tell. Now that she thought about it, sheâd never seen him without the helmet on.Â
@thephoenixnomoreâ
âUnderstatement. Didnât you notice it was much quieter without me around? Thought you mightâve appreciated the space,â Eydis teased, eyes still trained on the arc pistol. A part of her wanted to believe that if it had come to it, sheâd have been able to use her biotics. But she knew that sheâd never quite get into the right mindset to use them, not with him around.Â
âWords canât describe how busy Iâve been. But Iâm not here to talk about work, Val, Iâm here to see you.â
"Keelah, don't you know how to knock? I almost shot you for that!"
@thephoenixnomore
âNot going to lie, babe, you wouldnât be the first man who tried to shoot me and you wouldnât be the last. Iâm a big, bad biotic, I can take care of myself. â
The pet name passes her lips like itâs the most natural thing and for a moment, all Eydis wants to do is rush forward and embrace the quarian she may have a teensy tiny giant crush on. Instead, she just shrugs, approaching him as casually as she can.
âBesides, Iâve wanted to see you for ages.âÂ
