Look at this except from A Semi-Charming Kind of Life:

“Oh dear, you’re getting shiny,” Apple said. She reached into her jewelled purse and pulled out a powder puff. “Are you nervous?” “A bit,” Darling admitted. Apple blotted Darling’s nose. “Don’t worry. You are the perfect princess, and everyone knows it.”

Darling looks like everything Apple wants to be, but Darling herself doesn't want that at all! Apple respects and admires Darling for the very traits Darling knows are are an exhausting facade!

Apple is insecure about not being perfect (because of her hair, her glasses, her friendships with Rebels and sense of justice gradually turning her away from the legacy system). She earnestly does her best to meet her mother’s expectations, striving with everything she has. Meanwhile Darling seems to effortlessly meet her family’s expectations, but is actually weaving an elaborate web of deception that leaves her lonely and miserable. Neither feels safe to let anyone see beneath the mask, but for opposite reasons. God. I’m normal about them.

Apple hiding her glasses the way Darling hides her armour... Darling pretending to be more weak and helpless than she is, while Apple is literally walking around with impaired vision because she's internalised the royal culture's insane ableism. Both wanting to prove themselves as worthy and capable, but Apple as a leader, scholar and diplomat (traditional princess/queen strengths) and Darling as a knight and hero (rebellious and subversive), so they have to do it in the light and shadow, respectively.

Sparrow in Piping Hot Beat pets a stoat, so I think that's his canonical pet. I'd call him Robb (because he robs, eh eh.)

Alistair: Honestly, I think Rascal the cat should be his, not Nina's. Alice always has a cat with her, so it seems appropriate that it's a family tradition.

Nina, on the other hand, now has a ladybug, which she can use as a locomotive when she uses the small form. She will be called Nella.

I think Bunny should have a gecko, a nod to the White Rabbit/Bill Lizard relationship. I'd call him Tick-Tack.

Jillian should have a cow, since it's an important part of Jack and the Beanstalk. Her name is Chickpea.

Justine should have a barn owl. It's a night animal so good for her story,and keep the motive of dancer having birds. She's called Ronda (dance type).

Ramona also has a bird, but a cardinal, because she's red like her mother. His name is Crimson.

Design Notes: The Snow Queen lives in Lapland, which covers multiple countries, so I took vague inspiration from various historical silhouettes.

The Russian Kokoshnik, a style of crown, is shaped as a snowflake, acting as a halo.

My Crystal is non-human, and I had her floating with her eyes covered by lace. Which is both something that accompanies the kokoshnik, and aids her ‘wilfully blind’ personality.

The cage hanging from her kokoshnik is for her to ‘collect’ any pets she finds and wants to keep. Regardless of whether they want to go with her.

Aside from the fur, and yarn patterns, there isn’t detail in this design. I wanted the eye to be drawn to her face, curtained by pine cones and frosted leaves, so the only other minor element is her flushed nose and fingers.

Character Rewrite: In the original Snow Queen story she isn’t a real villain. She is written more as an eldritch creature who doesn’t understand human norms and is instead drawn to exciting new pets. When the Snow Queen steals a boy she takes him to her castle and gives him a puzzle to solve-not understanding that the cold is making him sick. When he solves the puzzle she simply lets him leave.

In this version Crystal is closer to a fae than a human, and has spent her life isolated in Lapland, only being introduced to the outside world for the first time at EAH. She is easily distracted, excitable, and views the Royal/Rebel conflict the same way you’d view two kittens slapping each other. She isn’t cruel, she’s just never met people before and is a pawn in Grimm’s plan to replace the defected Princesses.
