About 30 years ago, I described a simple solution to these two problems: For $25 you can purchase a content passport. It’s available for purchase on any website that’s part of the Content Network, and you need it to play content on their site. The site that sells it to you receives $10 commission for selling it to you. It keeps track of every member site you visit (it’s really easy now, with a cookie). And then the system coordinator allocates, on a percentage basis, $10 to the sites you visit. Everything will go somewhere, whether you visit one site or a thousand. There is no friction, because it is a buffet, as it is now. Read whatever you want, no ads, no hassle. The most visited sites make the most money from monthly royalty distributions. Prepare your blog for the holiday season: a step-by-step guide Image by Canva Over the past week we have been running a short series of interviews with bloggers of different types, to get an idea of ​​how they are preparing for the holiday season. We talked to owners about: If this series has made you realize how ill-prepared you are for the weeks ahead, don’t worry. Today’s post is a checklist for getting ready for the holiday season. 1. Have you determined when you will take a break? The first thing to do is get out the calendar. Figure out when you don’t want to blog and block out those days (or weeks!). Now you know how much time you have. 2. Do you know what you want to get out of this period? The benefits of setting goals in advance are twofold. First of all, the objectives will help you establish your priorities for the next few weeks. Second, they’ll help you gauge your efforts when you return to blogging in 2023. They might even help you improve your work when the holiday season returns a year from now. Set yourself some goals. They can be as simple as maintaining regular posting and social media schedules, or as detailed as setting sales expectations and tracking traffic sources that convert. 3. Do you know what you need to do to get there? List the tasks you will need to achieve your goals. If you want to maintain a positioning schedule twice a week, how much writing time will you need? How long for assembly? Will you incorporate affiliate promotions into these posts? Which ones, and when will they be executed? When is the best time to promote these messages? Make a list of all the things you need to do. Then plan them. Think well ahead and go into detail. Don’t just take note to organize ten tweets to post automatically during the holiday season. Plan the time you’ll need to find quality content to include in those tweets. Without getting your plans to this level of granularity, you run the risk of underestimating the time and energy you’ll need to do everything on your list. As you do all of this, think about how you might make your life as a blogger easier. Which brings me to… 4. Have you prioritized? It’s an extra step, but one you might end up doing. You may have already found that your eyes are bigger than your stomach, so to speak, when you set your goals for the period. If you can’t fit it all in, check your top priorities and ask yourself if you’d be happy if you just achieved them. This should help you focus as the inevitable distractions and schedule changes arise in the weeks ahead…and you’re running out of time! Point: Consider creating your own checklist for each of the tasks you need to complete, to avoid waking up in a panic because you forgot to find images for a post or encode your affiliate links in this email. -mail that you send automatically. 5. Have you prepared everything for your return in 2023? Getting ready for the holiday season isn’t just about getting to January 1, 2023. It’s also about getting to work as soon as you get back to your desk. If the whole process of preparing for the holiday season has been a red flag for you, maybe think first (and listen to my podcast on) how to make the most of your time. Then, before the break, when you have all your priorities straight, write a to-do list for Day 1 of 2023. Why aren’t your affiliate promotions converting? Photo by Maayan Nemanov on Unsplash I received an email this morning from a blogger who has built a large loyal readership to his blog and recently attempted to monetize that readership by doing affiliate promotions on this blog. The problem – no one buys anything they promote. I spent a few minutes on Skype with the blogger to unpack the issue and asked him a series of questions to try to get to the heart of the matter. Here are the three questions I asked and why I asked them… 1. Why do your readers come to your site? Getting in touch with the “intent” of your readers is really important when considering any type of monetization. Are they there for the community, information, advice, to buy something, to do research, to have fun or something else? Understanding why your reader is coming will give you some clues as to what they might be responding to in terms of promotions. For example, if they are there to learn something, promoting a “how to” type e-book might be the best thing to promote. If they’re there looking for a purchase, you might be better off promoting the products they’re looking for. Unfortunately, not all readers attempt to convert particularly well with affiliate marketing. For example, if they’re there for a sense of belonging – unless you can promote a conference or community for them to join, you might be better off thinking about a different monetization model. 2. Are the products you promote relevant to your readers? It might seem like a no-brainer, but I’m amazed how many times I see bloggers promoting products that deal with a completely different topic than their blog post. The products you promote as an affiliate must be: high quality (anything low quality will burn your readers’ trust, but if you’re promoting a great product, they’ll thank you) related to the topic of your blog relevant to the needs and intent of your readers (see point 1) at a relevant price – i.e. don’t promote high-value products if your readership doesn’t usually have big budgets! 3. Do you promote personally? Another common mistake bloggers make when promoting affiliate products is that they simply stick an affiliate banner or link in their sidebar and think it will generate heaps of sales. The problem with this is that it’s little more than an “ad” and your readers will likely be blindsided. By far the most effective way to promote affiliate products is to write about them in a personal way – from your own experience. This means you’ll probably want to choose something to promote that you have personal experience with and can give an honest endorsement or review of. Your readers read your blog because they want to hear from you – so tell them what you promote and why you do it. Do this primarily in a blog post, but you’ll also want to consider emailing your newsletter list for important promotions and of course following up with social media status updates as well. Feel free to try affiliate promotions on banner ads – but you’ll find that your conversions are significantly higher if you add a bit of YOU into your product promotion. There’s so much more to affiliate marketing than what I’ve written above – but if you’re not seeing conversions, the 3 questions above might help you uncover some strategies to get you going. the front.
