One of our Board members has gone on a quest to organize all our materials (and thus earned my undying loyalty). This is our Big Sword rack! But keen-eyed viewers may be saying, “Kay, I notice that one of these swords has been inserted upside down, perhaps by accident?”
Fear not, dear reader. That sword must be placed in the rack upside down because it is Too Fucking Big For The Rack:
I am 5’5”. This sword might be a foot taller than me. I can’t use it, not because of the weight, but because my arms are not long enough.
I anticipate many tall men injuring themselves with this sword, thus I have proposed that we name it the Teacher’s Aide.
Chris for scale. The sword is also taller than him.
How tall is Chris?
6’5”, making Teacher’s Aide a truly stupid 6’6”
I'd like to thank the strong cool breeze from Lake Ontario for giving us a beautiful summer morning despite the heat wave. Also the humidex for staying below 70%. And I'm going to pretend they didn't change the recipe to my favourite bagels on the street.

The other day, I asked my partner, “What are you doing?”
Simple question, right?
Except… he suddenly got defensive. His tone changed. I could feel tension building, and I had no idea why. So I took a breath and asked, “Wait, what did you hear me say?”
He paused, thought about it, and said, “I thought you meant ‘Why aren’t you doing anything?’ Like you were mad I was being lazy.”
But that wasn’t what I meant at all. I’d genuinely just been curious.
And that moment reminded me how easily things can go sideways when we assume intent. Our brains, especially when we’ve had messy pasts, trauma, or relationship anxiety, tend to fill in the blanks with the worst possible meaning.
But that one question, “What did you hear me say?”, turned what could’ve been an argument into understanding.
It gave both of us a chance to clarify before our brains made up a story that wasn’t true. I was able to explain, and he was able to listen. Understanding what I meant changed his tension entirely.
Sometimes the fight isn’t about what was said. It’s about what was heard.
“What did you hear me say?” can defuse a storm before it starts.
An excellent tool.
thing I am proud of: when the doctor started going on a weird rant about long covid not being real I paused and listened to his nonsense for a bit and then very calmly said, in a polite and curious tone, "you don't believe in post-viral illness?" and he like. stammered a bunch and was like OH WELL I'M NOT SAYING -- I DON'T...I just think ..! and backpedaled awkwardly while I just sat there like :3c interesting :3c thank you so much for clarifying your stance on this :3c
an important skill for chronically ill people to develop is the ability to treat the doctor as though they are simply a person you are interviewing to find out how much they know about your condition.
Holy shit op this is LITERALLY in the book 'Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depends On It'. Written by a guy who did hostage negotiation and then tried doing business negotiation, and mopped the floor with industry experts.
I'm fortunate enough to have a primary care doctor who knows about hEDS, but it's occurring to me that the skills in this book could be medically life changing for chronically ill folks of all kinds. Like. Literally a matter of life and death, especially for BIPOC and/or fat and/or young people who are having their issues dismissed.
HMMM interesting!! will have to check this out

Crushes are underrated, but in the next breath often taken too seriously.
