pro tip for new writers: have your friend change the password to your tumblr account without telling you what it is so you don’t feel compelled to tell the story through inbox asks instead of all the screen time you’ve been given
I'll forgive Toby Fox for making Chapter 5 a character driven adventure instead of plot driven, because, and I hate to break this to you, but. Flowery rules.
Idc this should’ve been in the show.
Deltarune is going to have an Expedition 33 ending(s). Mark my words.

Every Deltarune chapter has a taste of this theme, but especially Chapter 3 and 5: It's dangerous to immerse yourself in a fake world and deny reality. Games, TV, the internet, et cetera are wonderful things that comfort us and influence the way we develop, but they can also be a trap. Escapism can go too far.
In Chapter 6 we will have Noelle, stricken with grief over her father's death and longing to escape, entering or creating a Dark World where her father is reanimated and Noelle has the freedom to act out and live her dreams. Susie will have to confront the idea that she, too, cannot live in the Dark World. Noelle or Rudy will be the final boss.
That's my Game Theory(TM).
my takeaway from the chapter
Flowery is so. He's so unappealingly obnoxiously sexyman bait that he causes an integer overflow and wraps back around into being compelling. I hate him.
Nothing turns me off a fic faster than the "Alternate Universe - Modern Setting" tag. You give me back my premise right now.
Deltarune really went "We have Reigen Arataka at home."

I want to hurt Flowery in a way that matters. /affectionate
rips off my shirt to reveal my "flowery did nothing wrong (lukewarm) (nuanced) (he still kinda sucks though) (but i like that about him?)" shirt underneath
Alright, Chapter 5 is barely 24 hours old, so I apologize if these takes turn out to be lukewarm or obvious in hindsight, but I need to throw this out there or I'm gonna explode.
I wanna talk about Flowery.
Everyone fucking hates Flowery. Why?
Everyone is comparing his reveal to Tenna's, but those circumstances could not be more different in terms of narrative. Tenna is, from the jump, supposed to be light-hearted and fun. He is the personification of the Fun Gang letting loose and having a good time. This is what makes his eventual reveal that he's working with the Knight into an actual betrayal. If we didn't trust Tenna, that moment wouldn't work.
With Flowery, the vibes are rancid from the moment he's revealed. He's charming and charismatic, but something is off. Not to mention that Ralsei absolutely despises him.
So, why make Flowery unlikable? What's the point?
Well, the point is that Flowery is the exact opposite of Tenna.
With Tenna, we like him, but he's wrong.
With Flowery, we hate him, but he's right.
Everything that Flowery does to Asgore is an exact mirror to what Ralsei did with Kris and Susie at the beginning of the game. In fact, the entire chapter is a complete mirror of Chapter 1's dark world!
Flowery gives Asgore a home, gives him friends, tells him that he's special. And yet, we spend the entire chapter trying to get Asgore out of that situation, with the understanding that it's dangerous.
But what about it is dangerous? The denial of reality? Because Susie is now living in a dark world. The exact thing that Asgore gave an entire heartwarming speech about not doing.
When Flowery tells us that we could close Castle Town instead of his dark world and we would be no closer to the Roaring, we hate him because he's right. When he says that all the flowers want is to live and a chance to make Asgore as happy as he's made them, we hate him because he's right.
And, at the end of the chapter, he tries to defeat us with the power of friendship. The other flowers never turn on him. He uses a mercy attack against us, and Kris responds by hitting him with a sword.
Y'all, were supposed to hate Flowery. And we're supposed to feel uncomfortable about why we do.
Damn... when I said I wanted Flowery to get split in half that's not really what I meant.
I adore Deltarune, but its formula issss very apparent by now. We enter the dark world, we meet the charismatic antagonist(s) who follows us through the world, shenanigans occur, friendships develop, and there is a boss battle at the end. It works but I'm ready for the game to diverge and I hope chapter 6+7 are a little different. I'm ready for the real meat! Chapter 4 is probably my favorite because of the amount of lore it drops and how everything starts to feel truly consequential.
If I didn't have a reluctant soft spot for Flowery I don't think I'd rate Chapter 5 too highly apart from the developments we get between Susie and Noelle. Unfortunately I do like Flowery and I think he adds even more intrigue to Ralsei's character.

Flowery knows a lot about Ralsei... He knew Ralsei's name and resemblance to Asriel before being introduced. Ralsei is immediately aggro toward him. Flowery recognizes Ralsei's apparent gender dysphoria in a way no one else has addressed. This bolsters the theory that Ralsei is Kris's monster headband, or other personal object, and would've existed in the Light World in proximity to Flowery's flower.
Kris dressing up as a monster, imprinting the feelings of dysphoria and wishing to be something other than what they are perceived as by the world onto the Darkner version of their costume...?
Humm hummmm.
Oh Flowery. They could never make me hate you. I do have to set you on fire though. I cannot rest until my twink aggression is sated.
