𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐃?

on  one  hand,  the  doors  being  stuck  was  a  good  thing.  meant  they  definitely  would  notice  if  someone  tried  getting  inside.  not  that  anybody  ever  tried.  despite  the  fire  burning  bright  inside  the  big  newsroom  area,  their  existence  inside  the  office  building  went  unseen.  the  windows  had  been  covered  -  insulation  &  protection  alike  &  the  smoke  handily  sank  through  the  gaps  in  the  broken  windows  off  to  the  sides  &  floor.  not  the  comfiest  place,  but  ...  it  had  protected  them  for  months  now.

together  with  the  help  from  inside,  they  got  the  door  open.  sailor's  mouth,  huh?  fair.  "nobody  complained  yet."  maybe  they  didn't  dare,  though  he  doubted  it.  "thanks  for  the  assist.  thought  i'd  have  to  freeze  my  ass  off  out  there."  he  stepped  inside,  glancing  around  back  at  the  door.  they  had  to  make  sure  someone  kept  an  eye  on  it  in  case  someone  else  got  trapped  outside.  for  now  though,  elijah  headed  for  one  of  the  heaters,  palms  rubbed  against  one  another  for  extra  warmth.  "what  you  been  up  to?"  his  gaze  fell  on...  oh.  another  heater.  a  bit  worse  for  wear,  but  not  lost.  "fuck,  you  fixin'  up  a  heater?"  they  could  use  it,  badly.  the  cold  came  to  stay  &  they  had  gas  that  would  last  them  a  while.  “need  a  hand?  i  got  a  good  one  still.”

sometimes,  he  felt  like  a  caged  dog.  he  wasn't  even  the  one  that  was  trapped  outside,  but  the  effort  that  it  took  to  open  that  door  showed  him  a  couple  of  things.  he  wasn't  twenty  years  old  anymore.  this  building  kept  people  out  as  much  as  they  kept  them  in.  without  each  other,  they  would  probably  die.  none  of  that  was  working  to  calm  him  down  about  the  situation  that  he  was  in.  at  least  he  wasn't  going  to  be  arrested  when  he  turned  a  random  corner.  that  was  a  good  thing  …  right?  there  was  a  lot  at  stake  here,  so  he  just  had  to  keep  his  head  high.   

when  the  door  was  finally  busted  open,  he  couldn't  help  but  snicker.  “most  people  are  probably  afraid  to  tell  it  how  it  is.  i  ain't.”  that  was  just  one  of  the  many  times  celio  made  that  clear.  he  was  never  one  to  bite  his  tongue  or  hold  back.  “i'm  sure  someone  else  would've  let  you  in  before  that  happened.”  they  were  a  community.  all  about  helping  one  another.  right?  at  least  that's  what  they  liked  to  say  to  everyone's  face.  “yeah.  unless  you  wanna  spend  the  rest  of  the  winter  with  just  a  couple  of  crappy  ones.”  he  wasn't  just  fixing  it,  he  was  making  sure  it  kicked  the  cold's  ass.  the  builder  nodded  silently,  kneeling  down  and  grabbing  his  tools  again.  “get  on  the  other  side.  just  sit  against  it.” 

what  was  the  point  in  wasting  their  time  with  a  radio?  were  they  going  to  have  a  dance  party?  then,  celio  remembered  some  stations  had  news  channels  and  alerts  on  them.  he  thought  about  lying,  then  changed  his  mind.

everything  was  just  a  series  of  wires  connected  together.  even  the  people.  although  he  hadn't  spoken  a  lot  to  the  other  man,  he  knew  that  he  was  one  of  the  healers.  they  needed  someone  like  him  around.  no  matter  how  cranky  the  ex-thief  was  about  having  so  many  guys  in  a  tight  space.  he  leaned  up  against  the  wall  and  just  nodded.

summer  brought  heat  and  the  stink  of  rot.  fall  stripped  the  trees,  made  it  harder  to  hide.  winter,  though…  winter  was  different.  the  snow  made  everything  quiet—too  quiet.  the  cold  wasn't  just  outside  anymore.  it  had  a  way  of  seeping  in,  into  our  bones,  into  our  heads.  it  was  something  new  to  fight.  elijah  knew  it  was  coming,  they'd  had  months  to  prepare,  but  as  the  cold  washed  over  the  city,  he  found  himself  humbled  once  more.

they'd  stocked  up  on  everything  they  could,  had  prepared  water  tanks  close  to  the  fireplace  to  reheat  &  tried  to  insulate  at  least  the  floor  they  lived  on,  but  it  was  still  cold.  the  group  had  shrunk  significantly  over  the  past  few  weeks;  some  left  due  to  hunger  or  fear,  some  left  because  of  the  cold,  some  left  just  because  they  could,  but  those  who  stayed  remained  strong.

the  last  raid  left  him  a  bit  worse  for  wear,  but  then  again  -  compared  to  the  one  before,  he  was  fine.  his  arm  was  wrapped  up  after  he'd  cut  it  open  on  the  pipe  of  a  broken  heater,  but  one  of  the  docs  left  him  with  a  few  stitches  &  it  was  healing  up  great.  though  that  also  meant  that  ......unfortunately,  occasionally,  he  needed  help  because  he  wasn't  supposed  to  put  strain  on  the  arm  just  yet.

"fuckin'  piece  of  shit,  fuck."  hushed  curses,  a  kick  to  the  door  that  refused  to  budge,  which  he  assumed  was  because  of  the  cold.  metal  frames  shrunk,  wood  expanded  &  he  was  stuck  outside  his  own  home.  it  was  only  the  main  living  area,  but  still  —  it  was  freezing  out  there.  "anybody  in  there  able  to  open  the  fu—flippin'  door  please?  helloo?"

honestly,  the  less  people  around  the  better.  at  least  that's  what  celio  thought.  there  were  too  many  mouths  to  feed,  too  many  people  that  needed  blankets,  just  too  many  of  everything.  he  had  finished  stealing  from  one  of  the  stores  with  the  thick  winter  coats  and  gear.  he  had  taken  to  do  what  he  did  best  nowadays,  build.

he  grabbed  his  tools  and  hunkered  down  to  work  on  one  of  the  heaters.  celio  tried  his  best  to  make  sure  that  it  was  going  to  start  working.  they  needed  something  that  at  least  radiated  a  semblance  of  warmth.  that  was  when  he  heard  something  coming  from  the  outside.  he  grabbed  his  wrench  like  it  was  a  weapon  and  turned  to  face  the  door.

then  he  realized  that  it  wasn't  someone  that  was  coming  to  attack  them.  it  was  one  of  them.  that  sentence  still  felt  strange  in  his  mind.  celio  wasn't  used  to  being  a  part  of  a  big  group  like  this.  he  was  always  on  high  alert.  which  was  rich  since  he  was  the  criminal.  perhaps  he  should've  just  ignored  him.  he  could  only  think  about  what  the  other  guys  would  have  said. 

with  a  grunt,  he  got  up  from  the  ground  and  walked  on  over  to  the  door.  at  first,  it  wouldn't  budge  too  much,  but  eventually  he  pulled  it  through.  “everyone  around  here  used  to  your  sailor's  mouth  yet?  hurry  up.”  he  stepped  over  to  the  inside  to  give  elijah  enough  space  to  step  inside.
