Knitting communities together one bridge at a time!

Yarnbombing is a fun, bright, beautiful way to celebrate public space without any damage to historic structures and is temporary and easily removable.  You may have seen yarnbombs on parking signs, small trees or mail boxes.  This one is bigger!

600 brilliantly colored, afghan-sized panels knitted and crocheted by area residents will be used to "yarnbomb" one of Pittsburgh’s iconic Three Sisters bridges.  It will be the largest such fiberart installation in the U.S.A. ever.

Knit the Bridge (KtB) wants to transform the way communities work, play, and interact with each other. Knit the Bridge reaches deep into diverse neighborhoods and brings people together in new ways to knit, crochet, design, install, and collaborate. When drivers, bikers, boaters, and pedestrians admire the bridge's fabulous new look, they will also see the full range of ages, ethnicities, gender identities, abilities, and economic groups that comprise the vibrant corner of the rustbelt.

Knit the Bridge is a labor of love and commitment started with the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh, a local nonprofit organization committed to the creative development, appreciation, and preservation of the fiber arts. Most of the bridge panels will be thoroughly laundered, repaired, and donated to neighborhood shelters. Some pieces will be given as thank you perks to donors. Noted local collectors, Larry Handy and Dale Van Wieren will talk about this fascinating hobby, how it started, why they do it and how you can too. Learn about the history of beer-related objects and what makes certain items rare and valuable.

The discussion will be followed by a live colonial beer-making demonstration in the Museum’s Marian Mitchell Garden by beer historian Rich Wagner. Wagner will show how beer was made in the 18th century by using the same kinds of hops, barley, and wooden tools used to brew beer in Philadelphia 250 years ago. This Conversation is held in conjunction with the exhibition, Made in Philadelphia, Craft Brewing: It's a Beer Revolution, on view at the Museum through June 30, 2013.

Visitors are invited to view the Museum's exhibitions from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. The program begins promptly at 3:00 p.m. Beer making demonstration to follow. This is a FREE event

The call went out in February 2012 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the SHCJ. On August 12, 1862, the first six Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus landed in New York City after an arduous boat journey. They were filled with determination, courage, and resiliency. The Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus are celebrated their 150th anniversary of service in the United States (see http://www.shcj.org/amer/SHCJ150.htm for many more details). Marking this anniversary, the Sisters are made a quilt with highlights from the last 150 years.

The first Keiretsu Forum Business Idea Competition was held Monday night at the Graduate Center of West Chester University.  Dr. Monica Zimmerman moderated the program with assistance from entrepreneur expert, Dr. Howard Lubert and judges Charles Carter, Philadelphia Chapter President of the Keiretsu Forum Mid-Atlantic, Patricia Diggin, Marketing professor, Adam Gripton, Partner with Gunnip and Company and Daniel Krause, Chester County SCORE.  From over 3 dozen applications, ten were selected for presentations.

Michael Scheerer successfully entered three projects:  Aesthetech Watches, a hybrid smart watch combining kinetic energy and solar power; Indoor digital golf center; and one of the winning proposals -Nitrogen Ice Cream!  Brett Gordon submitted two projects: Kick Switch, a service to trade or resell old sneekers – believe me, yes, you would want to buy used shoes when you can get $500 or more! The other project, Pick Pockets would promote removable and exchangeable breast pockets for customized t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, etc.  Kent Leininger won for his presentation of Fair Trade Connect to encourage universities to ‘buy local’ with direct business relationships.  By streamlining the supply chain there will be less waste and greater savings for the consumer and lowered costs. Morgan Pastor-Jaffe wants to help communities with a Community Bike Share project. Nicholas Lager and Joseph DiLella contributed their idea for MASDAQ, an internet exchange service for musicians, DJs and live band’s for local venues. TbTrade by Daniel Ryan would be an online textbook trading company enabling students to find books within a university’s course requirements. Sunbrella Wash n’ Block won an award for the novel continuous spray dry shampoo with SPF sunblock to protect the scalp and hair from sun damage while at the same time improving the appearance of hair.  Katelyn McEvoy’s presentation described many advantages and is the furthest develop product proposal.

On June 3, view an abridged film screening of Brother Outsider, an award winning educational documentary about the life of Bayard Rustin. Bayard was a West Chester native, a tireless crusader for human rights, a disciple of Gandhi and mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sacrificing notoriety, he is often referred to as the “unknown hero” and “invisible man” of the civil rights movement because he dared to live as an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion and networking reception.
