And I think when those words scaped her lips, she wasn't really thinking about that topic in particular, she wasn't thinking about the symbol, or the dead guy, or the wilderness. I think she was thinking about her life. And she got mad, she got mad because she's so fucking done of people misunderstanding things, for example, her mental illness.

I think what she told Nat, obviously losing her usual calm demeanor, came from deep within that pain.

From her parents not really understanding what was going on with her, from her father desperately trying to change the fact that she has something going on reducing it to "She's crazy, fix her on the psych ward".

Makes me think she also was frustrated because the only person that actually helped her understand she had a "gift" – Laura Lee –, died.

So she snapped when she was being ambushed by Nat's snarky comments. Because maybe she's been told many times something evil, fucked and rotten was in her.

And yes, 1996 wasn't exactly the year of understanding shit like that. She always had to hide herself from other people knowing she had schizophrenia.
