For any of my fellow journal geeks, here is an example from my SPN collection, of what I believe the original journal was heavily based on. It's a "Write Track by EM International" journal from the late 1980s. It's not exact of course (the show journal has three rings) but it looks to me like many of the features and certainly some of the pages and dividers made it into the show journal.

For all journal geeks out there, the journal from the pilot episode has two differences in the military pins and ribbons. The pin is the “Tet Offensive Survivor” pin (upside down in the journal). Also necessary for the pilot version of the journal is the Combat Action Ribbon (CAR).

I’ve been looking for this envelope since 2013 when I started working on the journal. It’s seen in episode 6.01 “Exile on Main Street” when Dean takes the journal from the trunk he has it stored in and flips through it. It’s been years of eBay searches but it finally arrived in the mail a few days ago from England. It took patience and a few dollars to find this bit of journal ephemera, now I’m a bit nervous to punch a hole in it to fit it into the journal…

New journal pages - yay!

Finally finished my S13E09 “The Bad Place” pages. It had been a long time since a new double page journal spread appeared on the show, it was great to see the boys reading from the journal again. For those who want to make the S13E09 "The Bad Place" Dreamwalker pages, here is my transcription of the text. Most of the text is clear in the screen caps I have but there are some blurred areas so for those I have just made my best guess.

Left side:

(NEAR WYOMING)? THE GIRLS WENT MISSING WHILE PLAYING IN THE YARD A COUPLE DAYS AGO. THE ONLY CLUE I HAD TO GO AFTER WAS A TAT- TERED VAGRANT POTTED AROUND THE AREA IN THE DAYS LEADING UP TO THE ABDUCTION. THE EVIDENT IS FLIMSY. BUT I DECIDED TO CHECK IT OUT. TURNS OUT MY INSTINCTS WERE SPOT ON. A DJINN GOT HIS INKED PAWWS ON THOSE GIRLS AND WAS SUCKING THEM DRY OF THEIR BLOOD. I TALKED TO THEIR MOTHERS BOTH A BLUBBERING MESS. AND THEY POINTED ME TO WHERE THE GIRLS WERE PLAYING. SEEMS THEY GOT TOO CLOSE TO AN ABANDONED FARMHOUSE THE DJINN HAD TURNED INTO HIS VACATION HOME. WAITED UNTIL DARK THEN ENTERED THE CASTLE. WHEN I GOT IN THERE I EXPECTED TO FIND THE GIRLS BUT THE PLACE WAS EMPTY. AS I WENT TO LEAVE THE DJINN GOT THE DROP ON ME. WE TUSSLED AND I ASKED HIM WHAT HE DID TO THE GIRLS. THE DJINN SAID THAT THEY WERE ALIVE BUT HE .THE ING IGHT OCKING FOR HE I E UT ATIVE DREAM AN USING THE U WALK HEIR ID. HE DIF- UE RATHER S BRAINO HIS

Right side:

I HAD TO FIND THE LOCATION OF THOSE GIRLS USING AFRICAN DREAM ROOT. I DOVE IN. I DON’T KNOW HOW LONG I WAS OUT, BUT IT FELT LIKE AN ETERNITY IN THE DREAM. IT WAS A TOUGH CLIME COMING OUT OF IT. BUT I GOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. HE HAD THE GIRLS STASHED IN A BOMBED OUT GAS STATION A COUPLE MILES SOUTH OF HIS LAIR. I GOT THE GIRLS SAFE AND SOUND TO THEIR MOTHERS AND GOT A HOME-COOKED MEAL FOR MY EFFORTS.

Journal Ephemera

I try to make my paper props as accurate as possible so when faced with reference material that is blurry or missing parts, I'll dig to find corroborating evidence for names, addresses etc. The letters that are used as fill in the journal are a good example. They are mostly about business dealings in Augusta, Georgia in the years 1905(6) and 1927 so checking city directories for Augusta for those time periods was helpful in confirming the names and addresses in the letters. For anyone interested in a bit of obscure journal building trivia, there are numerous letters included in the journal regarding the business dealings of one "Dr. Nathaniel P. Pratt".

Dr. Nathaniel Palmer Pratt, Sc.D. LL.D. was a real person. His letters have nothing to do with anything "supernatural" and I would assume are included in the journal as filler ephemera. One online obituary reads "Dr. Nathaniel Palmer Pratt (1854-1942), widely known chemical engineer, founder of the N. P. Pratt Laboratory for Analytical and Technical Chemistry and onetime president of Georgia Tech, died Sunday, November 16, at a private hospital. Dr. Pratt was 84 years old."
