I would delete your shitty caption addition in every lifetime
scientists in the 1990s, putting a Get More Purple gene attached to a harmless plant virus into an already purple petunia: please get more purple
the petunia, sensing an apparent honest to god Get More Purple Disease, using the previously undiscovered RNAi antiviral ability to shut down all other purple genes along with it just in case: you put VIRUS in petunia? you infect her with the More Purple?? oh! oh! her children shall bloom white! jail for mother, jail for mother for One Thousand Years!!!!
Btw the thing this discovered is like. A foundational lab technique now and has revolutionized genetics
“Hot and bothered” in the sense that it is 90 degrees out and I am extremely annoyed
So one of the things that can apparently contribute to kidney issues in cats is if they eat too much dry food and don't drink enough water; cats are adapted to get a lot of their water from their food since they're originally desert animals, and might not get enough water if they don't eat wet food. Unfortunately, Dozy won't eat wet food no matter what; she categorically refuses to touch the stuff. So a few months ago, we were looking for ways to get Dozy more fluids, and my wife noticed at the pet store a cat drink--basically meat broth with some floaty bits in--that was low-protein and meant for cats with kidney issues. So we figured, worth a try, right?
Great news: she loved it. Super tasty apparently. Great success. Along with the kidney-sensitive treats we found, it was a nice way to supplement her diet. Unforseen long-term consequence though: she loved it so much she began demanding it throughout the day. Like, would come up to us and meow, and meow, and meow, and not stop, until we got up, went to the kitchen, and got her some cat drink.
And by doing so on demand, we have unfortunately created a monster: no matter what we are doing at home, Dozy knows that if she sits next to you and meows, 1) you know what she wants, and 2) you know that she will not stop until you get it for her now. And when you do get it, she gets extremely excited. She will bum rush the kitchen door as you enter. She will run around your feet as you open the can. She will let out the creakiest, crunchiest, most nails-on-the-chalkboard meow you've ever heard if she thinks you're not going fast enough.
I do not begrudge her this. It is gratifying to care for a creature whose most ardent desires are so simple that it is this easy to fulfill them. But I am a little sad, because I know in my heart that I have never loved any comestible as much as she loves this cat drink. She has a pleasure of a purity and intensity that I will never know.
[the creacher in question]
Nothing on earth could have prepared me for the fucking face of Dozy

protect em dashes.
protect “not x, not y, but z” format.
protect short sentence stacking as a stylistic choice.
protect fanfic writers—who are kind enough to share their works with people to read for free—from ai witch hunts, speculations and accusations.
“don’t like don’t read” also applies to any fic that is ai-generated and any fic you think is ai-generated by the way. if you don’t like what you’re reading for any reason, you can always stop reading and exit the fic at any point. but harassment is never ever justified. no matter if you think you’ve found a noble excuse to do it. and also…
witch hunts, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does. if not more. I don’t want to see another innocent writer get driven away from the community because someone decides to harass and accuse them for using ai just because their fic happens to have “ai telltales” — the same telltales ai got from having been trained on millions of human-made works to mimic how real humans actually write.
This is so important and occurs outside of the fanfic space as well. I've seen authors get rejected because their book sounded 'too AI' when they're just the type of writer who knows how to use em dashes. I've seen content writers and copywriters spend hours on assignments they submit for job applications that reject them for 'using AI' that they never used to begin with! All while those jobs hire writers who did in fact use AI and prompt it NOT to 'sound like AI' (because yes that is something you can very easily do), and publishers work with authors who have openly mentioned using AI for 'editing and brainstorming' while receiving little to no backlash for it.
Also, no you're not some holier than thou smartass for presuming everyone who does not have em dashes/'not x, not y, but z' writing is writing without AI and vice versa. I especially hate when people in power like publishers, employers, and professors use this presumption to make life miserable for writers who genuinely love writing
There are many people who don’t share this sentiment, but I have an appreciation for when a fanfic is so separated from canon that it could’ve easily been its own original novel, and yet the author was only ever going to put that much energy into it if their favourite characters got to be there
I think there’s a difference between “the author stripped the media of everything it had to replace it with something easy” and “the author thought up a concept they really really like and are bestowing it upon the character like a medal”
you are required to accept that there is a vast conspiracy at all levels of power that has worked for hundreds of years to make you, and everyone you have ever known, more racist. you are required to accept that it has been extremely effective, it worked, you are racist.
you are required to become less racist.
when you are told that you are being racist, you are required to understand that as being offered assistance in resisting this vast conspiracy. say thank you.
you are required to cope with feeling guilty about being racist. your shame is only important to you, its only value is that it motivates you to be less racist.

Make Dialogue Good Again bitches i am NOT asking
"how do you write good dialogue" here's an idea let's just start with the characters NOT simply saying the plot out loud to one another for 20% of their conversations
actually let me be sincere here. I am not an expert on writing dialogue, but I flatter myself to know the basics at least. Here's some practical ways to improve dialogue:
read old plays. I'm not kidding. Read a play written pre-2000. Old Irish plays are my personal favourite because the dialogue is usually high context and hilarious
don't let the characters EVER say the plot out loud to each other. Allow the characters to say as little as possible to convey the plot to the reader/viewer; let visual language and context inform the rest. Readers are SUPPOSED to interpret, they are supposed to use their brains, for the love of god, LET THEM
"varying character voice" is not just about their accent or their social class, which are the two aspects I most often see varied in modern work. It more importantly means "how much would this character say, and what words would they choose to say it." Motive should always inform what a character reveals and how they reveal it. The most important part of a character's voice is the subtext within that voice - that's where their true characterisation is really hiding.
I saw this on somebody else's tumblr post which I now cannot find, but it's honestly a sublime piece of dialogue advice: whatever a character is saying, force them to Say It Without Saying It. If a character wants to be handed a red ball, they can say anything except "Hand me that red ball" to achieve that end. This goes for confessing feelings, outlining plots and plans, arguments, etc etc etc. If a character ever DOES need to say something super directly it should be an impactful moment in your story, NOT the norm.
i think every publisher should have to institute a ban on books that fail what i’m calling the “little life” and “what else?” tests
for reference.
"When I taught creative writing at Princeton, [my students] had been told all of their lives to write what they knew. I always began the course by saying, “Don’t pay any attention to that.” First, because you don’t know anything and second, because I don’t want to hear about your true love and your mama and your papa and your friends. Think of somebody you don’t know. What about a Mexican waitress in the Rio Grande who can barely speak English? Or what about a Grande Madame in Paris? Things way outside their camp. Imagine it, create it. Don’t record and editorialize on some event that you’ve already lived through. I was always amazed at how effective that was. They were always out of the box when they were given license to imagine something wholly outside their existence. I thought it was a good training for them. Even if they ended up just writing an autobiography, at least they could relate to themselves as strangers."
-Toni Morrison in an 2014 interview with NEA Arts Magazine
you can gain a reputation for being good with money by just being kind of boring. i don't like alcohol i don't like weed i don't go on dates i don't travel i don't try new food and ive been playing the same video games for 5 years. and my savings? heh. well i just bought a new jacket #my jacket.
