Crafters of Coffee
In the past few couple of years there has been a growing understanding and appreciation in Northern Ireland for good quality coffee. I have learned a lot this past year about all that is involved in the production of the cup of coffee that I enjoy when I visit a good coffee shop or brew at home. From the farm, to the processing of the beans, to the roasting, to the brewing. Coffee is a fragile thing, and there is care taken at every stage of the journey. Yet so often the only photograph that people see is an instagram picture of some nice latte art. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting on my iPhone, and a quick glance at my own instagram feed reveals that I am frequently guilty of sharing an abundance of these types of photos. My photographic project is to document the actual people involved in the creating of a good cup of coffee here in Northern Ireland.
As coffee is a craft, I plan to use my own craft to do this. I plan to shoot portraits of roasters, business people, baristas, and others involved in the process. I hope to shoot these on a Mamiya 645 camera, with Kodak Tri-X 400 Film. I then plan to develop the film myself, and make prints in my dark room, hopefully reflecting the care and work in the coffee industry, in my care and work involved in this project.
If you work in the specialty coffee industry in Northern Ireland, either as a business owner, roaster, barista or trainer. I would love for you to be a part of this project. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch with me using one of these channels.
Thanks
Connor
