Do you think it's worth starting a long fic/AU if you're not sure you'll be able to finish it?

Honestly, I think it is.
I’ve grappled with this question myself when I start fics and don’t finish them. Most of the time if I start something and post it I try to finish it (or put it on hiatus while I try to regroup), but even putting an idea to a document is fulfilling in its own way. In my mind, writing whatever fics you want to see is entirely up to you and even if it’s a half baked idea it’s still an idea that you deserve to explore if you want to!
First of all, does Vex know she has a crush on Percy, or has she not realized it yet/currently sees him as a friend?
How many of the de Rolos are alive in this AU? There has definitely been some family drama alluded to, but I can't tell if there is any implication of the mass murder.
Third of all, will Saundor come back, or is he out of the picture for the rest of the story?
Will Cassandra ever show up?
When it comes to Vex development, is recovering from her physical injuries going to play a large part in her introspective journey?

Hey there!! Apologies for the delayed reply! These are all great questions and I'm super happy to examine them!
(Just in case, trigger warning: Mentioned domestic abuse, child abuse)
Firstly, as of right now, where I'm at in Our Broken Pieces, Vex has not yet realized how she feels for Percy because she has a lot of other things on her mind. At this point, she knows Percy is one of her dearest friends (and perhaps knows that it goes a step further), but with everything that has been happening, she hasn't had the opportunity to really think about how she feels about other people in a romantic sense. Right now, she's focusing on healing and recovering from everything that's happened.
The only de Rolos alive are Percy and Cassandra. I'm going to touch on how the Briarwoods play into Percy's life as well as the lives of the group, but in this, the fact of their murdering Percy's family and keeping "custody" of Cassandra for years remains the same. A few more details include the fact that Percy ran away after weeks of torture/abuse at the hands of their partner Anna Ripley, but was forced to leave Cass behind. At the point with Our Broken Pieces, though, he has regained guardianship of Cass and otherwise reclaimed most everything that the Briarwoods stole. Delilah is in prison, Sylas is dead, and Ripley's on the run.
Saundor will come back, but after this, he's not so much of a problem anymore. I won't spoil anything, but when he does show up, it's primarily just for the sake of Vex's healing and prosecution for what he did.
Yes, Cassandra will show up! As mentioned above, she's now free from the Briarwoods but primarily lives in Whitestone with her and Percy's godmother, Yennen, while she finishes school. Percy plans to move back to Whitestone eventually, but he's been in Emon for so long, he's still grappling with trauma and unsure of when he's going to go back. She visits the group frequently, though.
For the most part, the bulk of Vex's recovery is going to be mental, even though the physical injuries will be hard to move past. A lot of this will be examined in part three of our broken pieces (if I ever get around to writing/finishing it T-T)

Modern AU Perc'ahlia: who initiated the first kiss and/or who said "I love you" first and how?
I'm definitely going to be examining that in a oneshot in the future, but suffice it to say...they both think they initiated the first kiss. It was kind of something they both fell into together without even realizing it was something they were both doing.

This au is a little further out from being released because I've just developed the bare outline of it, but it's going to be called The Howling Ones.
It's supposed to take place in Exandria (Tal'dorei), but the geography and characteristics of the continent are going to be slightly different from the campaign (kinda like how I did things in the Robin Hood AU).
Basically, Tal'dorei is without any solid form of control and is composed of various nation-states that are at odds with one another. The cause of this is the emergence of what are called 'Curseborns', or people suddenly appearing with a variety of destructive abilities that hadn't been previously observed. For a while, people blamed the Ashari for the development of these curses, or blood curses, believing that it was retribution for them being pushed back into small corners of the world, so the majority of the Ashari tribes have been hunted to extinction and forced into hiding. At the same time, the other groups fight for survival and power. The actual etiology of these is widely unknown.
At the start of the story, Vax is in a prison located to the north, hidden away from the rest of the world. People are sent there to disappear. He and Vex have been separated due to the actions of their father, as well as a powerful archfey, Saundor, who Syldor attempted to sell Vex into marriage with. Obviously, this arranged marriage didn't settle well with Vex and Vax, and upon trying to escape, the twins caused a terrible injury to both Syldor and Saundor before they were both captured. As punishment, rather than killing them, Saundor cursed the twins with a powerful blood curse, which forces them to feel whatever pain the other twin feels while also killing them excruciatingly slowly (always together somehow but forever apart) before sending them to separate prisons on opposite sides of the continent to rot.
He's been in prison for two years and has been unable to escape, until he's approached by a woman from the north who offers him a chance to win his freedom, as well as claiming she has a cure for the blood curse that afflicts both him and his lost twin. This woman identifies herself as a doctor and shows him a sketch of a certain white-haired man, allegedly a powerful and very dangerous curseborn that managed to escape from the same prison a few nights prior. She tells him that if he hunts the man down and brings him back alive, he'll have earned his freedom, as well as information that could find the cure for both him and his twin. Vax reluctantly agrees and is set loose with a sort of homing spell on him.
Meanwhile, Vex, having escaped before she could be imprisoned, has spent the last two years fighting for survival as a bandit and desperately trying to find her brother as well as a cure for the curse that threatens to kill them both. During her travels, she encounters a strange, displaced man who she can tell has been trying to hide in plain sight, acting as a sort of apprentice for a blacksmith while having no clear intention to stay in one place at a time. Shit happens, and they're forced to run together, finding that their goals align. He tells her that his name is Percy and he's looking for revenge. Vex is looking for revenge, her brother, and a cure. They decide they can help one another out and travel together (and more than trust and partnership start to grow).
This is going to be predominantly Vex, Percy, and Vax-centric, but the other members of Vox Machina also play a very important role! It's gonna be a while before I have this to where it can be posted, but I'm very excited to be writing it and can't wait to share it.

First off!!! Thank you so much!!! I’m so glad you enjoyed Sunlight and Smoke! When I first wrote it I kinda worried it was really self indulgent so it makes me very happy to know that other people enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
One of my favorite things to write in it was how Percy and Vex’s dynamic remained similar but different throughout that fic. It’s a little different from how the show and campaign handle it because it forces them into a situation where both of their lives are on the line at the hands of Ripley and tests their reliance on one another even when Percy’s not in control of himself due to Orthax. I thought it was a lot of fun to examine how they both handle that situation separately given what was happening and what that makes them realize about how they feel. I’m a sucker for some good hurt/comfort so writing it was totally a little self-indulgent. My favorite chapter/the chapter that made me come up with this fic was the one in the cell and from there the whole thing just kinda grew!
That being said, I think this fic/AU is more of a standalone rather than a series. I’ve debated doing a one shot story after it takes place though!

Just popped into my head, so i had to ask before i forgot:
In the Arranged Marriage AU, how would the truth spell amulet fiasco in the Cobalt Soul Archives go? Giving that Percy and Vex are already married?
Or would this be the moment you could broach the topic of future children [*wink*wink] ?
(i mean, if it's a spoiler for the fic, you don't have to answer; it's just my curiosity picking through here)
Ooh! I've been thinking about this a lot since S4 came out!!
I honestly have no clue which way I want to take it just yet, but I have an idea of how I want it to go. Since a lot of this fic is very show-dependent, with a lot of elements from the campaign, I know I've been using the show as a framework, but the fact that Vex and Percy are already married in this AU does change things quite a bit. I've been thinking about the subject of future heirs and other things that they could bring up, but I'm not sure that's a topic I want to broach just yet.
All of this to say, I've not yet completely planned it out just yet, but the new season definitely gave me a SHIT TON of things to consider!! Right now, though, I'm focusing on finishing up the Briarwood arc and how I'm gonna shift that into the Conclave arc, so we'll see how that goes. Just know it's definitely something that's under consideration!!

Q: Have you considered how you will tackle post-Briarwood marriedAU Perchalia - in terms of how they might feel like they "need" to stay in Whitestone? In the show/campaign, Whitestone is kinda just thrown onto Cassandra's shoulders, but now that THE lord n' lady Whitestone (in your fic) are alive and around, they might not wanna leave Whitestone again/feel even more obligated to stay behind to help rebuild? Will they be in Whitestone when the conclave attacks Emon? Will they have heirs sooner in the fic than in the campaign, seeing as they're ... well, pretty far into their relationship in your fic than they were in show/campaign? I'm so excitedddd!
It's definitely something I've given thought to!
Assuming everything works out in the end (evil author laughter), I definitely feel like they both will have more of an obligation to return to Whitestone to help Cass rebuild and heal, especially since they will eventually have a lot of healing to do as a family. That being said, I feel as if the will also feel as if they have things they need to sort out in Emon first. I'm not quite sure yet how I want that to fall into the Conclave Arc when we eventually get there, but their role in Whitestone and their marriage will definitely play a role in their decision-making in future parts of this series.
As for heirs...I won't say much, but it's definitely something I've given thought to.
Again, that's assuming everything in the Briarwood Arc turns out alright in the end!!

Okay one more spam — I'm about to go read Bring Back What Once Was Mine (again) to pretend everyone is happy...what gave you the idea for that story/what motivated you to write it?
This one was the first fic I'd written in a VERY long time, so this one holds a special place in my heart.
Honestly? Watching S3x12 for the first time was such an experience, and I am such a sucker for any iteration of Vex's confession/Percy's resurrection (I'm sure the sheer number of Glintshore-related fics I've written makes that clear lol), but I just kept thinking "What if it was Vex?"
I kept asking myself, what would have happened if Vex had been the one to go after him? What would Orthax prey on if Vex had been the one to enter his domain? Would her confession and Percy's receptiveness to it be any different? How would it be for the others? How would it play into her grief?
I just kept thinking about all of these things, and it led to a fic! And honestly, it helped me remember how much I love writing fics and though I was on the fence about writing it for a while, I'm so very glad that I did!!
Arrow of the Fallen question since I'm making my way through that one: what were your favorite parts/characters/scenes to write in that story?
This one was so much fun to write!!! I absolutely loved writing this fic!!
In terms of chapters, Chapter Ten (Shadow Waltz) was my favorite to write (probably the most self-indulgent, too).
I loved figuring out where the group would fit into the story. I knew I wanted it to be Vex-centric, but I had to figure out how I wanted everyone to fall into place. I knew I wanted Percy to sort of be in a Maid Marion kind of position to Vex's Robin Hood, and I knew I wanted Keyleth to have a close friendship with him, so trying to figure out how everyone got to where they were at the beginning was a lot of fun. I realized how much fun it was to write Percy, Keyleth, and Cassandra's dynamic, as well as Vax, Vex, and Velora together.
I also really enjoyed adapting the Chroma Conclave to fit the needs of the story, and though writing fight scenes is the bane of my existence, it was fun to explore each of those, too!!
