The sun was setting, painting the sea with golden reflections. Carlos and his friends had decided to celebrate their graduation with a beach vacation, far away from everything. It was their time of freedom, of lightheartedness, of challenges.
That afternoon, amidst laughter and jokes, someone suggested a test of courage: to ride a high wave on a surfboard, unaided, out to sea. Carlos smiled. He didn't want to back down. "Just one wave," he said. "Then I'll be back."
The sea seemed calm, but beneath the surface lurked strength. Carlos moved away, the board cutting through the water, the wind caressing his face.
Then the wave arrived.
High, sudden, powerful.
He tried to catch it, but lost his balance.
The board flew away, the water engulfing him.
A whirlwind, a blow to the chest, his breath knocked out.
He tried to surface, but the current pushed him under.
The lifeguards saw him too late.
When they reached him, Carlos was unconscious.
They dragged him to shore, laid him on the warm sand, and immediately began chest compressions.
“Ventilate her!”
“Prepare the AED!”
“More compressions!”
The doctor rushed in, the sun now low on the horizon.
The rhythm on the monitor was chaotic, then flat.
A shock.
No response.
Another.
Silence.
The compressions continued, stubborn, desperate.
But the sea had already taken its toll.
When the doctor stopped, the sky was red.
Carlos's friends watched in silence, unable to believe what they were seeing.
One of them clutched the board, still wet, as if it could bring him back.
Carlos didn't wake up.
The sea, calm as at the beginning, seemed unwilling to give anything back.
The beach remained empty for hours.
Only the rescuers' footprints and the mark of the board on the sand.
The next day, the news spread: a nineteen-year-old boy, dead from a show of courage.
His story became a warning.
A reminder that the sea, even when it seems friendly, does not forgive carelessness.
And every sunset, on that same beach, someone stops to watch the waves.
To remember Carlos, and the courage that cost him his life.
The day had begun with a promise of freedom. Samuele and Ivan, lifelong friends, had decided to dedicate that Saturday to surfing: high waves, warm sun, laughter lost in the wind. It was their ritual, the way they reminded each other that life can sometimes be simple.
But the sea, that day, had another intention.
They had just emerged beyond the breakers when they saw a wave approaching, bigger than the others. It wasn't threatening, just powerful. Samuele faced it with enthusiasm. Ivan followed, as always.
But the wave closed too quickly. It overwhelmed them. It pushed them down, down, down.
Samuele lost his board. Ivan lost his bearings. They both lost their breath.
When they resurfaced, just for an instant, another wave hit them. Then the silence of the water swallowed them.
From the tower, the lifeguards saw everything. There was no hesitation. There was no panic. Only action.
Two dived immediately, swimming vigorously against the current. A third prepared first aid supplies on the beach. A fourth called the ambulance.
When they reached the two friends, Samuele was unconscious. Ivan wasn't breathing.
They dragged them to shore with quick, precise movements.
Samuele was handed over to a lifeguard who immediately began chest compressions. Ivan to another, who placed the oxygen mask and checked his pulse.
Two bodies stretched out on the sand. Two lives suspended. Two parallel battles.
"Load the AED!" "Continue compressions!" "Ventilate her!" "More!"
The voices of the rescuers intertwined as if with a single will.
After a few minutes, Samuele gasped. A breath. A return.
Ivan, however, was unresponsive.
A shock. No rhythm.
Another. Silence.
The compressions continued, stubborn, desperate. But the sea had already taken its toll.
After long minutes, the ambulance doctor who had arrived on the beach slowly shook his head.
Ivan hadn't made it.
Samuele woke up in the ambulance, confused, trembling.
The first thing he asked was: "Where's Ivan?"
The silence that followed was heavier than any wave.
When they told him the truth, Samuele closed his eyes.
He didn't cry right away.
He didn't scream.
He just breathed, as if that gesture had suddenly become sacred.
In the following days, Samuele returned to the beach. He looked at the sea, immense, indifferent, beautiful. He left Ivan's board on the sand, near the lifeguard tower.
"Because he was part of this place," he said softly.
One of them placed a hand on Samuele's shoulder. "We did everything we could. And you are alive also thanks to him. Don't forget that."
Samuel nodded. The sea continued to move, as if to remind him that life is fragile, unpredictable, but also full of bonds that cannot be broken.
Ivan hadn't returned. But his memory remained there, among the waves. And Samuele, every time he looked at the horizon, felt that a piece of him continued to surf beside him.

I am drowned with no heartbeats.
I have been sent to the ER and being resuscitated.
My swimsuit has been cut off by medical staff.
I am naked, lying on the bed, unconscious with covering a blue sheet on my penis.
My bared strong chest muscle has been attached by the ECG electrodes and defib pads.
Then, I am experiencing external cardiac pacing.
A drowned young male has been sent to ER with being intubated.
He still has heart-rate but still in a terrible situation.
