So, you want to learn how to crochet but don't know where to start? I can help you.

Before digging into this blog, I recommend looking at my Beginners Guide. It will be regularly updated.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you I know everything there is to know about crochet, because honestly, I do not. I still search things all the time and look for external help and i have been crocheting for years. I do however know what it's like starting to learn and being overwhelmed with all of the things that you can make when crocheting. Everyone does things differently, and learn differently, so I hope to give confidence and comfortability in learning something new!

What this place is:

Judgement free (We don't do that over here)

A safe space for beginners who know absolutely nothing to more advanced individuals who want to learn more!

A place to understand crocheting from the basics and work your way up

Designed more specifically to learn basic techniques, learning to read patterns, an ability to access videos for hands on learning (Via Patreon and YouTube), and crochet projects ranging from blankets, scarves, and amigurumi (Plushies) - and apply these techniques to create what you want and how you want it!

Now....I am right handed. I am willing to learn how to crochet left handed to help those of you who are, but in case that doesn't pan out, I recommend watching a few videos on how to hold your yarn, needles, etc. in your left hand.

There is no right or wrong way to hold your yarn or crocheting in general when left handed or right handed. It's more of a comfortability aspect than anything. Just note that when crocheting left handed, things may look different but the output should be the same.

Tip 1

You will encounter various types of yarn and believe me there is a lot. As we start the basics, I definitely recommend cotton yarn to learn with. The stitches can be a little thinner which will be easier to see.

A lot of the basic videos I start will be made with cotton yarn.

Cotton yarn is also more durable and can be easily washed.

When you're just learning, your first time crocheting will not be a completed project. You may spend some time learning each stitch and I highly recommend that when you learn a stitch, repeat it, over and over.

Soon enough it can become muscle memory but it is also a skill that you can forget about.

Terminology is very important when watching videos and reading patterns. Including their abbreviations. Down below are basic terms that are used in crochet.

Before we get to that point though, you must understand US terms and UK terms. Be mindful of that when you watch videos or read patterns.

Here are US Terms into UK Terms

Slip Stitch (sl st) - Slip Stitch (sl st)

Single Crochet (sc) - Double Crochet (dc)

Half Double Crochet (hdc) - Half Treble Crochet (htc)

Double Crochet (dc) - Treble Crochet (tr)

Double Treble Crochet (dtr) - Triple Treble Crochet (trtr)

BASIC TERMINOLOGY - The above 5 will be used a lot here

ch — chain sl st — slip stitch sc — single crochet hdc — half double crochet dc — double crochet tr — treble crochet dtr — double treble crochet

st — stitch sts — stitches sp — space sk — skip rep — repeat rem — remaining

inc — increase dec — decrease sc2tog — single crochet two together dc2tog — double crochet two together

RS — right side WS — wrong side

FO — fasten off BO — bind off

BLO — back loop only FLO — front loop only

MC — magic circle (magic ring)

This is a very simple list of what you would need when starting any project. Staring out, it can cost a little bit to gather these necessary materials but I do find that getting these items in sets are worth it.

You can find most if not all of these items on Amazon, your local Walmart, local Hobby Lobby, or even your local Michaels.

Yarn (May sound obvious but hey...) (Starting out, I recommend Cotton Yarn)

Scissors (Any pair can work but preferably embroidery scissors)

Crochet Needles (Multi-packs are good starters as there are different sizes you can choose from) I prefer hooks that have soft or textured grips like this one

Stitch Markers (I like the ones that close via a clasp. Keeps them in place)

Tape measure (There are ones specifically for crocheting)

Darning Needles (Kind of like sewing needles with a lesser sharp end and come in various sizes for various yarn types.)

Stitch counter - Can be digital or manual (Eventually, you can learn to count your rows....but it can get tricky)

I work for law enforcement as a full time job with the crime scene unit. I love it very very much and there's always something new. I have crazy stories lol

I have a guineapig named Pickles (He's my cute little profile picture) and I have been crocheting for years. My mom got into it first and then taught my sister and myself. If you ask them, they love to do clothing pieces, and my mom really loves making cute little things like hats, bags, clothes, cups, etc.

Me? I love the cozy cute things. Amigurumi is more of my speciality which is crocheting a plushie basically in clear terms. I have an Etsy dedicated to some of my things, please check it out along with my other random ass hobbies lol

Anyone who starts to crochet, I always advise to start from the beginning. When we first see something that's been crocheted, it's usually something cool, right? A bag, a hat, sweater, blanket, and we want to jump right in and make it.

But it's not that easy.

There are wonderful crochet videos that go over the basics, but we sometimes don't realize how in-depth it is and don't take the time to really understand what's being done. It's easy to watch, but learning and applying those simple stitches really help in the long run.

So, understanding the stitches helps you eventually apply those skills into something more.
