ROMA: How Yalitza Aparicioâs role is changing the game
If you havenât watched Roma by Alfonso CuarĂłn then you should, itâs one of the most real and heartbreaking movies Iâve seen this year.Â
The film stars Yalitza Aparicio, an indigenous woman with mixtec origin who plays the role of Cleo, a domestic worker in the 70âČs. Yalitza had never acted before, she was studying to be a teacher yet her performance was amazing and according to the TIME magazine one of the best of the year.
Sheâs giving a voice to indigenous girls, being the first native american woman to be featured on the cover of VOGUE Mexico. And she has received a lot of criticism and racist comments, however, she said that she's happy of representing her culture and breaking the stereotypes.
As a descendant of indigenous people, I feel proud of seeing women and men with the same physical characteristics as me on the film and fashion industry. Thank you Yalitza because youâre representing us.
HOW YOUR CLOTHESÂ REPRESENT YOU
For me there are two types of people: the ones who see the world with a fashionist eye and the ones who donât.Â
If youâd ask me a year ago iâd probably say that itâs bullshit, that a âfashionist eyeâ doesnât exist. Oh boy⊠how wrong. It is a real thing, I truly believe that thereâs people who see beyond a pair of jeans, who see more. And those pals can understand you and know every little secret that you keep only by analysing your outfit.
So, how do a pair of clothes define you? Well, theyâre a reflection of our psyche, our subconscious. We dress according to our mood. And maybe we donât even notice this, we just put our things on and go out and we donât even know that we are letting other people know how and who we are.
So, itâs not just a piece of cloth, is a statement.
