High Falls State Park

High Falls State Park is a beautiful place to visit any time of year. The park has two waterfalls, one of which is over 100 feet high. There are also several hiking trails that lead to great views of these falls, as well as a beautiful natural swimming hole. High Falls is located just south of Jackson on Highway 129.

This park has some great amenities, such as cabins and campsites, but it also has a great visitor center with hiking maps, exhibits, and other information about the area’s natural history and wildlife. The park also offers guided hikes throughout the year, where you can learn more about the park’s history and see some of its most interesting features up close.

Indian Springs State Park

Indian Springs State Park is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, which is one of the oldest national forests in the United States. This forest covers more than 500,000 acres in Georgia and Alabama. Indian Springs State Park is a popular destination for hikers and campers who are looking for a relaxing getaway.

The park is home to many beautiful waterfalls, including Little Sweetwater Falls and Big Sweetwater Falls. There are also several trails that lead through the mountainsides, providing hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Lake Flovilla Park

Lake Flovilla Park is the perfect place to go for a picnic or just to relax. It’s a great place to take the kids, but it’s also well-suited for romantic excursions. The park features a walking trail, playground, and picnic areas. There’s even an area designated as a dog park where you can let your best friend run free and play ball with other dogs.

There are several places to launch boats at the park, so fishing enthusiasts can enjoy boating while they’re out on the water. If you prefer not to get your feet wet, however, you can still enjoy watching boats launch or just relax on one of the park’s many benches overlooking the water.

1. Indian Springs State Park

Indian Springs State Park has the prestigious title of one of the oldest state parks in the entire United States, and for its entire history, it has been a fantastic place to get out and feel nature. It has natural mineral springs that were first used by the Creek Native American tribe, and as European settlement progressed in the area the waters drew in more visitors until Indian Springs became a popular resort.  

Nowadays, visitors to the state park’s lake have access to many activities and facilities. The state park encompasses a total area of 528 acres with 105 of those acres being occupied by the water. There are 10 cottages, 62 reservable campsites, 5 picnic shelters, 1 group shelter, and a museum and boat ramp! Visitors can go boating, biking, fishing, paddling, and even play mini-golf! It’s easy to spend a whole day there making memories!

2. Dauset Trails Nature Center

Around the town of Jackson and the Indian Springs State Park, there is an extensive trail system that is available for anyone to use! These trails wind, rise, and fall over a course of thirty miles, and give visitors the opportunity to see over thirty different species of trees and many kinds of local wildlife! You can go on the trails by bike or on foot, and there are certain sections where you can experience them on horseback.

While you’re on the trails, don’t miss the animal trail! On this trail, it’s quite common to see barred owls, opossums, black bears, bald eagles, and even bobcats and gopher tortoises! It’s like going to a zoo, but the animals are in their natural habitats. Bring some binoculars to see them more easily!

3. Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1939, Piedmont National Wildlife has been a great place to get into the outdoors for almost ninety years. With the proper permits, visitors can hunt and fish. These permits can be obtained online, or in person at the Little Rock Wildlife Drive or the Refuge Visitor Center. Clear streams and beaver ponds cut across and dot the refuge, and it is home to a growing population of the red-cockaded woodpecker. Keep your ears open and you might hear one!

Big-Chic of Jackson Inc is the best place to get a late breakfast or early lunch in Jackson, but only if you have a car. The drive-through is extremely convenient, especially when you have a quarter of a dozen hangry kids in the back seat of your 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Just keep in mind that this restaurant opens at 10 on weekdays and 11 on Saturdays. If you like to eat your breakfast early, you may be better off going to Hunter’s Café or Lucy Lu’s Coffee Café. If you and your family have been running around the park all morning and everyone’s suddenly hungry, you can get great chicken for breakfast before other chicken restaurants open.

This café opens at 6 AM, so you don’t have to wait around most of the morning if you wake up hungry. If you’re into old west gunslinger tales and lore, then there’s an interesting sight to be found in nearby Griffin. The legendary dentist-turned-gunslinger Doc Holliday was born in Griffin, and according to his descendants, was buried there too. You can visit his final resting place in Oak Hill Cemetery.

High Falls Water Park

For a day of fun in the sun, take your children along to spend an afternoon frolicking in the pools and play areas of High Falls Water Park. At this clean, well-kept water park there’s a large family pool, two terrific water slides, and a pirate ship play area. You can sunbathe beside the pool in lounge chairs with sun umbrellas to shade you, and even hire the water park out for birthdays and other events.

Dauset Trails Nature Center

For more of an educational experience, pay a visit to this lovely nature center, which has a visitor’s center surrounded by acres of scenic forest. At the visitor’s center, you can learn about early farming life in the region through closely interacting with much of the state’s finest flora and fauna. The Wonder Room underneath the center has reptiles on display and other natural curiosities.

For biking or hiking enthusiasts, the nature center also provides excellent trails over all sorts of terrain. You can easily spend a full day exploring landscapes filled with wildflowers, wildlife, creeks, secluded ponds, and wonderful views.

Southern Belle Farm

For a wholesome taste of both modern farm life and farm-fresh produce, pop into this welcoming family-owned farm in nearby McDonough. Explore their 330 acres of land, picking strawberries and peaches in their fields, munching on the mouthwatering treats of Mimi’s Bakery, or perusing the produce of their extensive country market.
