there is a newly discovered shark species!! its called a Dudgeon epaulette shark. its a walking shark, a walking shark is a shark that can survive on land for a select amount of time. it was discovered in Papua New Guinea. it is sadly already endangered.
they are named after Christine Dudgeon, an ecologist. She was swimming in search of a leopard epaulette shark, when she discovered the Dudgeon epaulette shark. her and her team spent the next few days searching for more of its kind, and found a total of twelve.
they gathered biological samples from some of them and confirmed they were genetically different enough from other walking sharks to be an entirely new species.
even though this species is newly discovered, scientists suspect that they are at risk of going extinct. walking sharks in Papua New Guinea face threats such as habit loss due to coral bleaching caused by climate change.
scientists want to revisit the area and work to support the international union for conversation of nature with the hopes that theyll officially be recognized as endangered so more work can be put into helping them.
