But I will start by saying that Mas was the last one in Palpatine's entourage to discover he was a sith lord. Mas genuinely thought assisting the senator to unseat Chancellor Valorum was the best political maneuver for the galaxy at large. He was shocked when he discovered the secret agenda and wanted to jump ship, but he was ultimately coerced into staying & ended up reveling in the power and privlege his position awarded him.

I love how deeply Finn cares about others, despite the cold apathy the First Order tried to drill into him via indoctrination. He was willing to risk it all to save Rey from Starkiller base. Despite knowing that he could be captured, tortured and or killed by the First Order. When he was a stormtrooper, he went against Phasma's orders not to help his fellow soldiers in battle or simulators. He was reprimanded many times for saving lesst competent members of his squad. Finn is so loyal and compassionate that no amount of conditioning could wring that out of him. He parallels Luke in the fact that is incorruptable.

Loyalty and devotion are characteristics that were drilled into the new generation of First Order stormtroopers and and personnel from infancy. We see both Finn & Hux being indoctrinated, in different ways, in the novels. And they are both exceptionally loyal to their crews. Finn was actually reprimanded by Phasma multiple times for trying to save his squad mate, instead of leaving him behind. ( Unlike Finn, Hux, and most of the rest of the FO, Phasma was not trained from childhood. She joined at 18. Which is why she doesn't have the same sense of loyalty ). The difference with Finn is that he separates loyalty to his comrades from loyalty to the First Order. His natural moral compass breaks his conditioning enough for him to flee. Finn's inclination toward loyalty persists after he leaves the First Order, we see that when he risks his life, against slim odds, to retrieve Rey from Starkiller Base. His kindness & sincerity restructures the conditioning into a compassionate type of loyalty.
