i like to think there’s some missing context where chris had a sick feeling about the way his little sister talks about high school boys but thinks nothing of it (because she’s a woman, and the abuse he’s experienced was all in the hands of men, and he thinks of it as a statistical improbability that she would do anything drastic) until he finds out about derek.
and then he has to grapple with the memories of kate, his little sister, coming home late or sneaking out of the house with messy hair and hickeys and an excited look and him congratulating her—which now disgusts him, thinking back—on having a normal life with a normal fling. and he thinks for a moment that their line of work hasn’t broken her spirit.
and every time he looks at derek now he is nauseous. because he imagines how young he was and how old kate was and how ballistic he would go if something like that happened to his daughter. but he can’t stop mourning the little sister he thought he had, what could have been.
and i like to think derek eventually pulls him aside and tells him to cut it out cause he stinks of guilt, and allows chris to confess all memories of his sister that are now stained with context. and they both say it wasn’t each other’s fault, but they don’t entirely believe one another.
