If Albert Einstein, a renowned scientist and forward thinker, sees school as a place where you are just "learning for the exam" and that was during his time here, then we know that the system is outdated and sub par.

Should university libraries have nap spaces? One Harvard sophomore is trying to make that dream a reality.

Doing hours and hours of work pays off if a student is trying to understand the material. In most cases though, students just waste their time memorizing the material to perform well on the test and forget the information right after.

Fuck It All- The anthem of procrastinators.
Getting good grades puts so much pressure and stress on students throughout their educational career. We have a limited time here on Earth and if we spend it stressing over grades and tests, its such a waste. One should work hard in school, but not stress over tests which don't decipher your life.

When a student receives a failing grade on a paper, they see themselves as failures. Growing students have so much stress and pressure put on them through their education. When all their hard work gives them a failing grade, then they feel hopeless.

Joe McHugh: The current educational system is the right way to go. It has tradition and continues to work.
Alfie Kohn: I don't think so. The system is outdated. Its from the 19th century ya kook! It also uses a grading system that no way reflects the potential of all students.
Joe McHugh: It keeps everything organized and efficient all across the nation! There are not a lot of ways to keep every school in the United States on the same page.
Alfie Kohn: I understand. But the grading system is diminishing the students that are graduating and coming out of school. Due to the way the system is, a hardworking student goes through school and classes taking the easy way out to get the good grade. They are not interested in the material set forth in the class, they are only interested in the easiest way to get the good grade and continue on in school. There needs to be a change to motivate students to retain the information presented to them. If they didn't have the stress and pressure of grades, then this interest could be possible.
Joe McHugh: We will see what we can do. No promises though. The education system has been this way since the 19th century ya know.
Parents and grades
Parents grew up going through the same outdated educational system as their children. Due to this fact, parents have in their minds that getting good grades in school is the only sign of future success and therefore they push their kids to perform well. Although getting good grades is a great accomplishment and demonstrates understanding, it is not the only way to measure future success. There have been extremely successful figures that have dropped out of school and still have a bright future. Steve Jobs dropped out of school and continued to go to lectures on college campuses to retain and truly learn information. Without the stress and pressure of grades, people and students have the ability to retain information and form great ideas.
My Perspective on grades
. Letters on a piece of paper should not define how one thinks of themselves. Grades should not be the focus on how well a student is progressing in school. Students are growing physically and especially mentally throughout their education. When they are being bombarded with the notion that getting A’s on a report card is the only sign of dazzling academic ability, it will motivate them to learn but also alter their perspectives on what is expected of them in the future. I think that grades should not be the only evidence of academic achievement and intelligence. Students who get lower grades, could be retaining information better and utilizing the information in their lives as opposed to regurgitating information on a test. The grading system alters the perspectives and standards of young students which engraves in their minds that grades are the sure sign of accomplishment throughout their education. Due to this alteration one goes through their education viewing letters on a piece of paper as a definition of academic ability when in reality they are not the only sign of a bright future.

I just signed a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama: Students at schools around the nation are suffering from outrageous amounts of stress and pressure. Create a free stress survey that tells schools why and how much their students are stressed, and make it mandatory for ALL schools - charter, public, and private.
Alright people, here’s the deal. You know how tons and tons of people moan about how stressful school is on them and their piers? Well, what if there was a legit way for that to stop if the government actually saw that your school was going against what is deemed as “healthy” stress levels. Well, right now, there is a petition out there to the United States Government, that is saying there should be a free “stress test” to be taken by all schools, and they have to report their results, and if they show that it the average stress level is too high, then they must make reforms in order to balance out the stress, because mental health in the school is just as important as physical well being.Honestly, they [adults] tell us that we must maintain physical health, but what’s the point if I’m not motivated or over-using my mental capacities for things that could be modified to be done in a more efficient manner?
The text below is copy/pasted from the petition, and I also apologize for any grammatical errors in the previous paragraph, as English is not my mother tongue.
Stop Student Stress!
Hi World,
A close friend of mine attends Uplift North Hills Preparatory school in Texas. Students at that school, and others like it, are subjected to hours of busy work that gives them tremendous amounts of stress and only a few hours of sleep, if any. Stress has been proven to have lifelong affects, causing anxiety and depression. My friend has both of these. A simple stress survey would solve this problem. Tell the government to create a free stress survey for ALL schools to distribute to students, and make it mandatory that ALL schools participate and receive their results. That way schools will see the truth about stress and where it comes from, and start working to stop stress.

If a student is putting in the effort, they should see progress in their grades. This isn't always the case in our education system

What Does School Really Teach Children? 1. Truth come from authority. 2. Intelligence is the ability to remember and repeat 3. Accurate memory and repetition are rewarded. 4. Non-compliance is punished 5. Conform: intellectually and socially Follow this link to find a bundle of videos and analyses related to the sociological study of education.
When the idea of getting good grades engulfs the minds of students, they don't pay attention to the material in class. Rather they manipulate the class to earn the good score. They take short cuts because the good grade is what has been pounded into their minds since the beginning of their education
How grades make you view yourself
When hardworking students put in all their effort and time into studying for a test and they fail, there is a immediate reflection on themselves. Seeing a failing grade on a test makes the student feel like a failure. They did everything possible to succeed and yet they couldn't reach the goal because they weren't good enough. Having these negative thoughts about themselves, teen students develop anxiety and depression which ass further to the stress and pressure put onto them by their parents and teachers to perform well and get the grades. Students are learning. We are learning about the world around us and what it has to offer. We shouldn't have to have the pressure of grades shadow our enthusiasm of learning. School is a place to explore the mind and numerous paths we could take in our lives.
