Of course I have to celebrate today. If you've known me for more than five minutes, you probably already know that wolves are my favorite animal.

But my love for wolves goes far beyond thinking they're beautiful animals. There is something about wolves that has always fascinated me. They're powerful and wild, but they're also incredibly social. They form strong family bonds, communicate with one another, play, protect, teach their young, and depend on cooperation to survive. A wolf can be fiercely independent while still belonging to something bigger than itself, and maybe that's part of why I've always connected with them so much.

Wolves have also been misunderstood for centuries. Stories turned them into monsters lurking in dark forests, and fear helped justify their persecution. In reality, wolves are an important part of the ecosystems they inhabit, helping maintain balance among prey populations and influencing the larger environment around them.

International Wolf Day isn't only a day for people like me to flood everyone's feeds with wolves, although I absolutely reserve the right to do that. 😂 It's also an opportunity to appreciate these incredible animals, learn more about them, and recognize why conservation and coexistence matter.

To me, the wolf represents freedom, resilience, loyalty, instinct, strength, family, and the refusal to be completely tamed.

They're survivors. They adapt. They protect what matters to them. They can travel incredible distances, endure harsh conditions, and somehow still find time to play, howl together, and simply be wolves.

And that howl? There's something almost hauntingly beautiful about it. A sound carrying across miles of wilderness, saying "I'm here. Where are you?" A call to family, a declaration of presence, and one of the most unmistakable sounds in nature.

Here's to all the types of wolves in the world and to the people working to understand and protect them.
