If you’ve been downtown recently you may have noticed what is being referred to as San Diego’s newest landmark. A "Big Hit," this 14-foot tall illuminated sign seen from the North Island pier is a sight unlike any other in the city. It was quietly erected on the North Island Naval Air Station in January in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of The Navy’s growing interest in aviation and in honor of the first naval officer to undergo flight training in 1911.
The general reaction to our new landmark is positive. Many feel that it symbolizes the spirit of San Diego and the pride of the Navy. The electric blue lights are a welcomed change from the usual hotel or retail store signage that we are used to seeing on city skylines. It gives visitors an idea of San Diego's soul and history.
Of course, nothing of this size can take place without some criticism. Critics are wondering if the sign is actually a blatant advertising move for the Navy and that other government agencies will now start advertising throughout the San Diego Bay. It's been said the instant landmark may not be an appropriate place for commercial advertisement and could cause problems with light pollution.
Whatever your opinion on the new Fly Navy sign, it definitely makes a statement. It is nothing to just walk on by without notice. But then again, that's what good advertising is all about. Shouldn't an advertisement reinforcing the honor, power, reliability and dependability of our freedom be just as good as any other ad? Or better! We at CBC are all for the sign. It is bold, in your face, significant. It is, Fly Navy.

Papyrus...Boring.
Improve the quality of elegant typography. Evolve from Papyrus.
Does this wording inspire you to get a massage? Is it sexier and more effective than this one?
Maybe, but there needs to be a conscious understanding of how Papyrus is being completely overused on modern day print materials. In fact, it’s incredibly un-sexy. Regardless of the content, the message may be utterly ineffective to your audience due to the excessive use of this popular font.
Papyrus is used so much, it’s spawned fellow bloggers to rant about it’s overuse in a variety of businesses, as seen here. This is an entire website based on the hatred and overuse of Papyrus. There is even a YouTube video that talks about peoples hatred of the font and why it became so popular! Why are these people so passionate about their dislike of the font? According to our designer Rob Katnich, "Papyrus is used on everything." It is seen in spa collateral, restaurant collateral, menus, brochures, banners, letterhead, signage and even business cards. It’s popularity spreads over to logos and products, print media and websites. It was even used in the movie Avitar for the title and all of the sub-titles. It's an ancient, single-use font that is included as a systems font in both Windows and Apple computers. This, along with the reason that so many people REALLY like the font, is probably why you can't go anywhere without seeing it these days.
For those designers who work with both web and print media, the limitations of web typography are all too apparent. We believe some agencies and brands are tied to this font. With that being said, Copper Blue Creative, has made it our mission to provide artwork that uses alternative, but equally elegant fonts in beautiful ways to expose the uniqueness of our clients golf courses, spas or restaurant properties. So the next time you are working on a project and feel tempted to use Papyrus as your font, think of the poor, fed up designers out there and try something different! There are many font websites that will have fonts (many free ones!) that can give you the same feel as Papyrus, but won't be adding to the vast overuse of the once beloved font.

There is a new series on AMC starting Monday April 30th called The Pitch. It will give viewers a sneak peak into the inner workings of some of the top ad agencies in the country. Each week, 2 agencies go head-to-head to compete for a client. The catch is, they only have 7 days to prepare. In this compressed timeframe they have to work around the clock, stretch the limits of their budget, creativity, and try not to kill each other in order to win the client. With the additional pressure of either keeping their companies running or taking them to the next level.
This show will most likely dramatize everything about what it takes to run a successful agency. But advertising is an incredibly competitive business so there will, most likely, be a lot of reality to it as well. Every day agencies big and small are competing against each other to win over a client. The risks are in balancing the clients wishes and budget with your own creative vision. Push them just enough and the stars align and you have an amazing outcome that everyone is happy with. Push them too far or not enough and you've lost your client to someone who got the delicate balance the client was looking for.
At Copper Blue we are constantly competing for business against other agencies and we go though all the same creative processes to create work for our clients as the agencies on the show. It's not done in an office with the competition sitting right across the table with cameras running (not yet anyway!) but the competition for the business is still fierce. Without the hunger for the next job and the drive to be creative and stay relevant, an agency can get eaten up by someone hungrier and more willing to fight for the job. We are frequently fighting for new clients as well as striving to maintain an ongoing relationship with our current clients. Thankfully we love a little competition around here!
