Often considered the first modern school shooter she shot at a primary school across the road from her bedroom window on 29th January 1979. She was 16 years old at the time, she injured 9 people and killed 2 - the principal and a school custodian.

Her parents separated when she was young and she lived in poverty with her father, she reported that he physically and sexually abused her and that she was neglected by her mother. She was a depressed, odd teenager who reportedly hated the police and was called scary by some of her classmates.

Brenda stated that she thought her father wanted her to kill herself because she asked for a radio for christmas and he got her a semi-automatic .22 calibre rifle, which she subsequentley used in the shooting.

Brenda was reported by a journalist as saying “I don’t like Mondays” in response to a question of why she did it, however it is disputed whether this actually occurred or if it was made up for media coverage. The Boomtown Rats also made a hit song based on the quote.

Spencer was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years, she was charged with 2 counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
