Final info ive put together after i have just looked over the insert notes (inside the other tape) sent to me by my friend:

This band had Steven Wells and Andrew Bain in it - they went on to be in a pretty popular NZ rock band called Fur Patrol from late 90s-2000s, so this is a precursor to that. in the notes they also thank Campbell Kneale, a prolific underground nz musician in bands like Birchville Cat Motel and Black Boned Angel. they also thank "Drinkwater".

"Canceling" was also an AAVE term that originally meant "We ain't fucking with this person anymore because they're weird with weird and questionable beliefs" and white people took it and tainted it to mean "You're trying to ruin someone's life, how dare you make someone take accountability for their actions !" like they really thought that saying "Hey this person is racist, maybe you want to think twice before giving them money and support" is a bad thing and that says a lot more about them than it does about us

same with woke. We say "stay woke" because we know many white people will smile to your face in one minute and then lynch you in the next without a second thought. Sun down towns are everywhere in this country. Now the colloquial use of woke is like how they see DEI or affirmative action. They think it's making something Black, and thus "lesser", for no good reason. [because accountability for the continuous effects of slavery, jim crow, segregation, cops lynching us all the damn time, etc. is not a good reason to them]. They think any sort of advances for Black people - even if it helps other races - is a threat to their fragile myth of supremacy. Great replacement theory bullshit. White culture is just appropriating other cultures to strip them of meaning.

[2023] this is definitely a very subjective thing, but i always feel very alienated by the tumblr fave trope of "man looks approvingly at violent/powerful woman" as like, the Ideal Couple Dynamic - and yes, that's partly because my ideal dynamic for a M/F couple is Brothers In Arms But Heterosexual, but it's also because it seems very condescending - it feels like it's buying into gender stereotypes while externally purporting to challenge them.

[2026] as an addendum, or to finish the thought, it's because it often feels like it's not taking women's capacity for violence seriously, similarly to the stock joke character of the hyperviolent woman (she's a tiny cute girl but she's got a big hammer! and she threatens people! but it's funny because we all know women don't really have the power to hurt people!).

it also implies that the only way for a man and a woman to be in anything resembling an equal relationship is if she's capable of violence and he's not. and i think that sucks and isn't true.

Back in 2013, I posted a Welcome to Night Vale fic and someone commented, “I’m autistic and I see myself a lot in the way you write Carlos. Did you intend for him to autistic?”

And I was like “I’m flattered you think so! No, he’s not intended to be autistic, but I’m glad you can see yourself in him.”

Now twelve years later I spent some time this evening trying to track down that comment to give a very belated clarification. Whoever you were stranger, hey. I only said no because I based Carlos heavily on me, and since I wasn’t autistic, Carlos wouldn’t be either. Well. I’ve learned some stuff in the intervening decade that strongly support your literary analysis.
