There is a child in the building. Stu knows this because apart from the loose drawings they find in different classrooms, a wall has been freshly vandalised with spiky-haired anime wolves.
Herb's reluctant to go outside their safehouse more than necessary for survival. They're already walking around more than he'd prefer, and what if it's another monster? Stuart shames him immediately - apocalypse or not, he couldn't live with himself if he didn't at least try to help. (He's almost prepared to venture out to search on his own if he has to)
Herb gives in.
The next few days are spent with cautious search expeditions - mostly running into smaller creatures that they can avoid or fight off, but no sign of anyone human.
Until, eventually, Stu notices a short silhouette duck behind a corner. It must be the child. He tries to coax them out, but they run away. He takes chase but loses sight of them immediately. Only a few of these classrooms are unlocked, and he searches one at random, Herb following behind.
The room is dark. Something Large silently adjusts its footing on the ceiling as Stu calls out for the kid.
Herb intercepts the claw right before it hits Stuart. It pierces his chest, the tip of it mere inches from Stu's face. The creature tosses Herb aside as if he weighed nothing, his body crashing into tables and chairs. The thing is almost spider-like, if spiders were giant and had human skin pulled over them.
Stu manages to distract it before it can attack Herb again, leading it out of the room and blinding it with the fire extinguisher.
Herb can only lay there as he's losing blood. He manages to drag himself into the classroom's supply closet, fully assuming he's been left for dead. Well, not like there was much going for him to begin with.
When Stu returns from baiting the monster a safe enough distance away, he comes back to a trail of blood leading into a closet. He opens the door, fearing the worst.
Herb lays there, wheezing and rattling, but he's alive. Stu doesn't know what to do, but they can't stay here. Herb's barely conscious, but he manages to get him awake just long enough to get him back on his feet and walk him up to the breakroom.
He has no idea how he's supposed to handle a wound like that, let alone on someone as big as Herb, but he's got to try something. He can't die. He can't leave him alone in this nightmare. Stuart patches him up the best he can.
Herb's breathing, previously a constant background noise, has become far too quiet.

Akihiro Miwa recently passed away peacefully june 20th, and was not only a drag queen and a queer icon, but also the japanese voice of Arceus in the movie Arceus and the jewel of life, as well as the witch from Howl's moving castle and Moro from Princess Mononke.
Rest in peace and thank you for the wonderfull impact you made in this world.
One time when I was a kid a group of girls and I had to treat another student for hypothermia by ourselves because she had so many invisible health issues that the adults we asked for help didn't believe us. The student in question was actively hallucinating. When I finally ran for help the people I grabbed were slow as shit to respond, casually joking about how "dramatic" the person in question was.
The kid was picked up by an ambulance 30 minutes later.
Now as an adult working in security I get SO MANY folks- upper-middle aged mostly- coming to me to 'rat out' people they think are faking it.
I was once sent into a bathroom because a client demanded that the "fucker won't get out, so go drag them out"- I was NEVER going to do that, so I did a wellness check instead. You know who it was? A person recently released from the hospital after a car accident. They had a hole in their skull and major hearing loss. They couldn't answer the owner because they couldn't HEAR the owner.
Another time about a homeless man who got around town by kicking the ground from his wheelchair. "You know he doesn't actually need that thing, his legs work fine, it's just for pity points"- Oh, so he's not paralyzed, his wheelchair is performative? Funny story Dale, I actually know that guy, he was backed over by a truck and has chronic pain from his shattered pelvis. But sure, let's make him stand up and walk everywhere so nobody feels too bad for him and tries to help him or something.
"She doesn't need that scooter, I've seen her get out of it."
"Look how fat he is, because he just rides around and refuses to get up."
"She doesn't really need that cane- she comes here without it all the time"
