I'm confused about what Beethoven was doing in the black composers post. He was German.
By golly gee! I keep forgetting that Black people didnāt exist until the Fresh Prince of Bel Air came on television! Or that Black people existed in anywhere else than Africa even with slavery going on :) My apologies.
Anyway, hereās proof that Beethoven was Black:
"ā¦Ā Said directly,Ā Beethoven was a black man. Specifically, his mother was a Moor, that group of Muslim NorthernĀ Africans who conquered parts of Europeāmaking Spain their capitalāfor some 800 years.
In order to make such a substantial statement, presentation of verifiable evidence is compulsory. Letās start with what some of Beethovenās contemporaries and biographers say about his brown complexion:
(Louis Letronne, Beethoven, 1814, pencil drawing.)
"Frederick Hertz, German anthropologist, used these terms to describe him: āNegroid traits, dark skin, flat, thick nose.ā
Emil Ludwig, in his book āBeethoven,ā says: āHis face reveals no trace of the German. He was so dark that people dubbed him Spagnol [dark-skinned].ā
Fanny Giannatasio del Rio, in her book āAn Unrequited Love: An Episode in the Life of Beethoven,ā wrote āHis somewhat flat broad nose and rather wide mouth, his small piercing eyes and swarthy [dark] complexion, pockmarked into the bargain, gave him a strong resemblance to a mulatto.ā
Beethovenās death mask: profile and full face
C. Czerny stated, āHis beardāhe had not shaved for several daysāmade the lower part of his already brown face still darker.ā
Following are one word descriptions of Beethoven from various writers: Grillparzer, ādarkā; Bettina von Armin, ābrownā; Schindler, āred and brownā; Rellstab, ābrownishā; Gelinek, āshort, dark.ā
In Alexander ThayerāsĀ Life of Beethoven, vol.1, p. 134,Ā the author states, āthere is none of that obscurity which exalts one to write history as he would have it and not as it really was.Ā The facts are too patent.ā On this same page, he states that the German composer Franz JosefĀ Haydn was referred to as a āMoorā by Prince Esterhazy, and Beethoven had āeven more of the Moor in his looks.ā On p. 72, a BeethovenĀ contemporary,Ā Gottfried Fischer, describes him as round-nosed and of dark complexion. Also, he was called āder Spagnolā (the Spaniard).
OtherĀ āpatentāĀ sources, of which there areĀ many,Ā include, but are not limited to,Ā BeethovenĀ by Maynard Solomon, p.78. He is described as having āthick, bristly coal-black hairā (in todayās parlance, we proudly call it ākinkyā) and a āruddy-complexioned face.ā InĀ Ā Ā Beethoven:Ā His Life and TimesĀ by Artes Orga, p.72, Beethovenās pupil, Carl Czerny of the āSchool of Velocityā fame, recalls that Beethovenās ācoal-black hair, cut a la Titus, stood up around his head [sounds almost like an Afro].Ā His black beardā¦darkened the lower part of his dark-complexioned face.ā
Ā Ā Engraving by Blasius Hofel, Beethoven, 1814, color facsimile of engraving after a pencil drawing by Louis Letronne. This engraving was regarded in Beethovenās circle as particularly lifelike. Beethoven himself thought highly of it, and gave several copies to his friends.

They whitewashed BEETHOVEN?Ā O_O
Thank you, history/fact-checking Tumblr.
I now feel the need to go burn every white-skinned image of Beethoven I can find.
beethoven was totally black! how do people not know this?
jk because erasure
I have been playing Beethovenās music for 10+ years now and had absolutely no idea he was black. My life has been a lie.
OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT. I HAVE A BACHELOR DEGREE IN MUSIC, MY MAJOR WAS āMUSIC HISTORY, THEORY, AND LITERATUREā I TOOK MULTIPLE CLASSES SPECIFICALLY IN BEETHOVENāS STRING QUARTETS AND MY SCHOOL HAD AN INTERNATIONAL BEETHOVEN SYMPOSIUM WHERE THERE WERE PAPERS ON THINGS LIKE THE KIND OF FUCKING PAAAAAAPER HE DID HIS MANUSCRIPTS ON, IN DIFFERENT CITIES, TO SEE WHERE AND WHEN HE WROTE SPECIFIC SNIPPETS OF MUSIC. NEVER IN MY EDUCATION OR READINGS DID I EITHER A) NOTICE THIS B) WAS SPECIFICALLY TOLD THIS. I think thereās a combination of systemic racism in this, and my own internalized racism. I have, in fact, read Maynard Solomonās biography and didnāt pick up on this. I have read the Czerny sources as well. My Beethoven teacher (Bill Kinderman) is one of the top Beethoven scholars in the world, and I donāt remember hearing any of this from him. I even did a semester of graduate work in musicology, specifically focusing on the Beethoven string quartets (I really fucking love those things) and we never spoke about this. I cannot say I am in any way surprised at this. I am embarrassed, angry, and upset that this was erased from my DECADES of music education. Which doesnāt surprise me at all, because classical music is very specifically in our culture for white people, especially men, especially upper class white men. Oof, this one is going to take a while to fully fucking digest, I am in angry tears.
Holy shit. One of the greatest musical minds of all time and he got whitewashed.
The truth needs to be spread.
Johnny Carson voice: āI did not know that.ā
This isnāt the first time that Iāve read on tumblr that Beethoven was black, but I feel compelled to reblog it now because casually scrolling past evidence of erasure and noting it is not enough. Iād love to see a documentary about this.
White peopleās inability to deal with black genius is astounding.
Beethoven was probably black. The evidence seems pretty convincing. People should know this.
Kind of a pet peeve of mine.
This fucking shit though.
A 13-Year-Oldās Slavery Analogy Raises Some Uncomfortable Truths in School
In a bold comparative analysis of TheNarrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Jada Williams, a 13-year old eighth grader at School #3 in Rochester, New York, asserted that in her experience, todayās education system is a modern-day version of slavery. According to the Fredrick Douglass Foundation of New York, the schoolsā teachers and administrators were so offended by Williamsā essay that they began a campaign of harassmentākicking her out of class and trying to suspend herāthat ultimately forced her parents to withdraw her from the school. In her essay, which was written for a contest, Williams reflected on what Douglass heard his slave master, Mr. Auld, telling his wife after catching her teaching Douglass how to read. āIf you teach that nigger (speaking of myself) how to read, there will be no keeping him,ā Auld says. āIt will forever unfit him to be a slave.Ā He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master.ā
Williams wrote that overcrowded, poorly managed classrooms prevent real learning from happening and thus produces the same results as Mr. Auldās outright ban. She wrote that her white teachersāthe vast majority of Rochester students are black and Hispanic, but very few teachers are people of colorāare in a āposition of power to dictate what I can, cannot, and will learn, only desiring that I may get bored because of the inconsistency and the mismanagement of the classroom.ā

truth.
Iām so freaking proud of this child.
āThe conservative Frederick Douglass FoundationĀ gave Williams a special award, saying that her essay āactually demonstrates that she understood the autobiography.ā They have also reached out to the school for an explanation of the 13-year-oldās treatment.ā
She spoke truth to power.
Good job helping make her argument more solid by kicking her out of class and forcing her parents to take her out of school.

An explanation of what radians measure: the angle in terms of the radius curved around the circle.
holy fucking shit, my entire education has just clicked.
I love seeing things click for other people (especially in math). That instant exhilaration is the reason math and science are fun for me.
Reblogging this because using animation as a teaching tool = fuckin boss
I love math animations. Donāt think I ever really understood the Fourier transform until I saw a gif of a Cartesian plot being wrapped around the pole at (0, 0).
