Freedom or Equality? Should we enforce equality of outcome at the expense of personal freedom OR should we prioritize personal freedom, even though that means we have to accept inequality of outcome? Should we make sure everyone is equal at the start line or should we make sure everyone is equal at the finish line? Which is truly in our best interest as an individual and as a society?

May 09, 2018 More sunflowers and some of the arugula bolt have begun to brown and fall over. Even the walkways are covered in plants haha. I'm restisting the urge to cut them back, because I want the added shade from the coming summer sun and because I'm looking forward to collecting more seeds to give away. :)

May 12, 2018 One of the ways a Food Forest is supposed to work is that you plant taller sun-loving plants to offer summer shade to the shorter plants. I chose different varieties of sunflowers for this task, and you can see, once it started warming up, they grew FAST!! All the tall plants in the middle are arugula bolting. The flowers attracted SO many butterflies and bees and provided shade for the middle beds.

May 20, 2018 Arugula is starting to turn brown, but still providing shade (a little TOO much, maybe ;) ). Seeds are on their way!

May 27, 2018 One of the reasons I chose sunflowers was that Lisa mentioned that she really loved sunflowers, but never had any. This is her out enjoying them and picking a few to take inside.

June 02, 2018 Arugula continues to seed.

July 16, 2018 By this time, I had added tarps (repurposed shower curtains) between the trellis and the wall, since my sprinkler system was keeping that wall too wet on my neighbor's side. All the brown you see is arugula that had bolted and is in the process of drying/reseeding. One 'major' mistake I did make was not realizing how quickly sunflowers faded, so much of my shade was missing, just as we were getting into the hottest months. Sunflowers were one of the few things I was manually reseeding so far, as everything else was still growing fine. The herb bed on the left still had sunflowers because I'd gotten a new pack of seeds in Feb or Mar and planted them in that bed, since all the other beds already had plenty.

September 01, 2018 August was a scorcher, but this garden was thriving! Many of my replanted sunflowers had quickly grown back to provide some shade for the beds below. In a few months, my Food Forest grew into a Food Jungle! haha

October 14, 2018 A few more of the second generation sunflowers are fading now, but I'm not replanting them, since it will be getting cooler soon, and I won't need shade from the summer sun.

Oct 30, 2018 Well into the fall now. Orange flowers are sunflowers still and marigolds. Vines in front are canaloupes and yellow squash.
