rebel, revel
Parents want us to play the same games they did: invest, in yourself, in others, in book learning, creep on the future, be reasonable, listen to wisdom, write it down, etc. And i can hold my motherâs arm when i take her out to dinner, and i can tell my father that heâs wrong, and i can hold my own through all of this, even though in their truest, worst moments they donât really want me to, and i can say iâm a rebel and we are different and fuck off.
These are thoughtful revolutions, all of them, but lenin had to get on a train to get real. Excessive talking kills hearts and minds. We will tumble The Revolution with our words and our pictures, which, donât get it twisted - are just wordsx1000. In fact, It will be 1000x1000 pictures, televised with anderson cooper telling us why It matters, so we can acknowledge âwhat went wrongâ and try to move forward.

kk. love you.
Those are words not worth saying. Those are words to keep things the same.
I hope that these, on both one hand and the other, are words worth saying: Throw the baby out, keep the bathwater, and Loving Too Much should not be shameful, and, especially, please donât forget that we will be eaten alive by the things that give us a reason to breathe. Â

Missed Connections
Coffee makes me cry anymore:
waking up to the way I felt about the world
yesterday, but which way I had slept offÂ
while I kissed you.
The sobriety of giving love:
I am only just learning, you know.
I am only just learning, be slow
in taking
the assurance I gave you that the world was going to be fine.
What a wonderful task for me to put my mind to -
and I still wonât ever want to call it a lie.
Which is to call out to you, my dear witch, you are the magical truth.
Oh and I believe, you know, but then something hits -Â
I know you know this -
something fuzzy like punk
or majestic like looking down from very high.
And all the sudden itâs too much truth,
like the actual silver numbers on how many people spendÂ
how much time on craigslist,
waiting for missed connections to write them back.
compassion
When painting for yourself a picture of someone be careful to make sure that you have seen the full spectrum to the best of your ability. For those you see as ugly or unkind may truly be the most compassionate people. Exploring others in love and not in hate is one of the most powerful things humans can do to create peace. Love always wins, obvi. xx
Unzipping The Double HelixÂ
The Double Helix, James Watsonâs personal account of the discovery of DNAâs helical structure, is a unique work in the catalog of science history. Itâs a combination of unabashed personal accounts, biased perspectives, frank (and often unfair) judgments, and it shines a very particular shade of light on a singular era of science. That light is an embellished truth, and, in the case of Rosalind Franklin, victimized her legacy.
Thatâs why this newly released version of the book has me so excited. Photos, letters and all kinds of historical annotation are included alongside Watsonâs original account, to add depth and context to many of his claims. The origin of conflict between Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin boils down to a single letter, and Watsonâs famous (and sexist) account of Franklinâs âhomelinessâ and feminism is countered by the words of many others who knew her. The photos, letters and doodles included not only correct parts of Watsonâs less-than-historically-accurate account of the discovery, but it adds a depth to all of the larger-than-life characters featured within.
Maggie Koerth-Baker from Boing Boing spoke with James Watson regarding his thoughts on the new edition, and his answers may surprise you. If you read one thing this week, read her interview.
Iâve met James Watson, and spent an evening (not one-on-one, unfortunately) talking with him, hearing his various thoughts on science, the world and those who live in it. I came away with the discovery that these characters are, in fact, people. They can be painted in a way that either darkens or illuminates their best features. Watsonâs charmingly unapologetic take on the world has accomplished the former many times over, and books like this one promise to do the latter.
If I had to distill him into a single statement, this line from Maggieâs interview does it:
Friendships almost have to evaporate when a scientist chooses unilaterally to work toward a scientific objective also pursued by a friend.
(via Boing Boing)
this is 100x funnier because of the guy laughing so hard he can barely breath

Hearing damage
Today I have hearing damage from the show that was yesterday.
A ringing in my ears and a better idea of how it is that I turn aroundÂ
and shout out loud the names of people I've only just met;Â
the noise stays inside, underwater is better, and flying is divine down the 110 once the cops have started drinking, too.
//
So, Siren, who just so happens to sidle up in darkness,
I think we're in luck with this brand new silence, your head on my shoulder:
I've heard your singing would put me to sleep,Â
and we have a long way to go yet.
