Insecure - Benedict Bridgerton x Reader
characters: Benedict fem! reader (reader is not described physically but 'woman' 'wife' are used) content: kissing, cuddles, general fluff, comfort wc. 2.1k (not beta read)
Looking down the hallway, Benedict let out a small puff of air. The carriage would be ready any moment now. It wasn’t like he wanted to go to this garden party but he was sort of expected to go and naturally, he’d drag his wife along with him. You always made the most boring events fun even if it was just him holding your hand the entire time.
But still, you hadn’t left the room yet. He was almost sure the maids had finished dressing you so he wasn’t sure why you were still lingering in the bedroom. He didn’t want to press you for being late, he’d actually prefer if you were. But he could feel something was off. Especially since you had been excited to go all week. You had nonstop gushed about how much you really wanted to see the rest of the family and your friends.
You seemed so giddy this morning but now you were taking far longer than usual to be ready. He knew you well enough to know something was wrong. As much as he didn’t want to go, he didn’t want you to miss an event you were genuinely happy to go to.
Benedict made his way back to the room, pushing the door open gently. “Love, the carriage will be here soon.” He said, looking into your shared bedroom that was lit brightly from the spring sun. It smelled sweet in there like your perfume and flowers combined, a smell he adored.
He spotted you standing in front of the mirror. You were dressed beautifully in a soft pastel blue with your hair done nicely with an elegant barrette clipped delicately holding it all together. It was a sight that made his heart flutter and eyes soften with love. Even after all this time, he fell more in love with you each day.
However, Benedict noticed your hands fidgeting nervously and your face twisted with worry and discomfort. It was a look he became familiar with when he married you. It was difficult, being a woman of high means. It meant so much was expected of you. Your appearance was judged down to a hair out of place and naturally, that led to endless amounts of doubt and deeply rooted insecurity. He sighed softly.
“You look beautiful,” he said, his voice gentle and warm, closing the door behind him.
Briefly, you turned your head to look at him. Beautiful. It was a word you didn’t feel you met. You couldn’t accept a compliment like that. “Sorry, I’m almost ready.” You mumbled quietly, turning your attention back to your reflection. “I just need a minute.”
You looked over yourself, noticing every perceived imperfection. You were second guessing everything. Did your hair frame your face well? Did this dress look good with your body? Was this color pretty with your complexion? What would everyone say when they saw you? What would they think but never say? You let out a nervous breath, nitpicking every little thing you could.
Benedict frowned, hurting to see you in such a state. He watched your eyes fill with insecurity through the reflection. It pained him that you doubted your beauty. How could you not see how perfect you were? How could you not see just how beautiful you were?
He took a few gentle steps until he was behind you. “I’ve seen that look before.” He said softly, his hands coming up to wrap around your waist and guide you close until your back was pressed to his chest. He leaned in and pressed a soft warm kiss to your cheek.
You made a weak smile, leaning into his hold. Your hands came to rest over his arms that circled you so lovingly. Your heart felt so full at his casual acts of affection. “What look?” You met his eyes through the reflection of the mirror.
“The one where you doubt your beauty.” Benedict murmured softly, resting his chin on your shoulder. His eyes scanned and admired you in the mirror. He loved how you looked in his arms, how your dress matched his eye color which he had no doubt was an intentional choice by you. It was those little things that made him love you more. “It saddens me when you have that look.”
Your gaze flickered down, having been caught in your feelings. “..,It is easy to doubt my beauty when I have so little.” You murmured, a frown tugging at your lips. “Honestly, I don't understand what you see in me sometimes.”
Benedict frowned, his heart aching for you a bit more. “What do I see in you?” He whispered softly. “I see someone kind, funny and compassionate.” He murmured, pressing a kiss to your jaw. “With lovely eyes, and a sweet smile.” He kissed your cheek. “And the most perfect laugh.” He cooed, nuzzling his face against your neck.
Benedict littered little kisses along your neck, up to your jaw. “Everything about you is beautiful,” he whispered in your ear, soft and warm. “Your face, your body, your voice. All of it.” He smiled against your skin, almost losing himself in the warmth of your presence. “My perfect wife.”
He managed to get a small smile from you. You leaned more into his hold, trying to look over yourself from his perception. “You only say all those things because you love me.” You smiled weakly, unable to see what he saw.
“I do love you, completely and irrevocably." Benedict said softly, his eyes meeting yours once more in the reflection. “Without doubt or fear, I love you. I love every part of you, every bit of you.” He smiled lovingly. “But my love for you has nothing to do with your beauty. You are perfect just as you are, my dear.”
You let out an almost sheepish laugh, your cheeks flushing slightly. “You praise me too highly, Benedict.” You smiled, feeling just a bit better.
“Oh nonsense, I don’t praise you enough.” He smiled, kissing your neck once more. His hand roamed lovingly over your side while the other stayed gently wrapped around you. “I think you look very beautiful today. Have I mentioned how much I love you in blue?” He chuckled against your skin. “It suits you.”
You smiled and leaned your head against his. Your hand found his and intertwined your fingers together. “Thank you.” You finally accept his compliments. “I can’t say I feel beautiful today but... you have a way of making me feel better.”
Benedict pouted his lips slightly. That wasn’t good enough. He wanted you to feel as beautiful as he saw you. He glanced off and slowly shifted his hold from you. “Well, that’s understandable, you’re not completely ready yet.” He smiled that cheeky lopsided smile, pulling from you.
You turned your head to look at him, confused for a moment. He walked over to one of the dressers and rummaged through it. When he walked back to you, holding a small velvet box. “What is this?” You tilted your head with a little curious smile, wondering what he was up to.
Benedict placed the box in your hand. “Well, I was waiting for our anniversary but... I think you could have this today. Besides, I don’t think I could wait to give it to you any longer.” He smiled with a small shrug.
You looked up at him and for a moment, you just felt... confused. Confused that someone could love you so much that he had gifts prepared so readily. Even married as long as you were, it always surprised you how he was always so prepared to spoil you. You made a small chuckle. “You’re sure you want to give this to me now?”
Benedict nodded gently, his eyes looking at the box with care and a hint of nervousness. He had asked each of his sisters for advice on this gift, even asking his mother because he wanted you to like it. He wanted to get you something that you could wear proudly and feel beautiful in.
His hands came up to cup yours as a silent gesture to open it. “Please.”
Slowly, you opened the box to reveal a gorgeous necklace with light blue gems fixed into a flower at the center. “...Oh, Ben... this is-” You felt breathless. It was sweet and thoughtful and so overly romantic.
His eyes watched you, taking in your reaction. He loved the way your eyes widened and then softened, the way your lips parted letting out a soft gasp, how you gently caressed the design of the charm with your fingertips. He could tell you liked it, or at the very least were touched by the gesture.
“Beautiful?” He questioned with a silly grin and a head tilt.
You lifted your head, your eyes a bit glossy and nodded. “Yes. Beautiful.” You whispered out the words.
He smiled, carefully picking up the necklace from the box. He stepped behind you once more, guiding you to face the mirror. “It seems only fitting that the most beautiful woman would receive a beautiful necklace.” He hummed, low and sweet. Slowly he placed the necklace on your neck, clasping it closed, then rested his hands on your shoulders.
“There.” he smiled softly. “Now you’re ready.”
You looked at yourself in the mirror. Somehow, that little necklace changed things. You felt a bit prettier, a bit more loved. It went well with your features. It was evident he took the time to find something that would compliment you well. “I love it.” you said softly, bringing your gaze to him behind you in the mirror’s reflection.
He had a sincere loving smile on his lips. “As do I. It looks good on you.” he ran his fingers gently over your exposed skin. He wrapped his arms around you and kissed your cheek.
You smiled softly, slowly turning in his hold. He happily accommodated your movements, loosening his hold so you could turn around. You gently placed your hands on his chest, feeling his hands splay over your back and guide you closer. He smiled warmly, admiring the necklace that rested against your chest before his eyes flickered back up to yours.
“I think...you are the most beautiful woman,” he whispered. “And I will say it and remind you every day.” His hand came up to brush against your cheek. “Even if you don’t believe it. I will say it until you do.”
A sweet smile warmed on your lips, leaning your cheek into his touch. “Thank you. It means the world to me the efforts you go through to make me feel better.”
Benedict smiled, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. “I would go to the ends of the earth for you, sweet wife.” he murmured softly. He tilted your chin up with a smile, “but reminding you of your beauty is one of the easier tasks. Primarily because I am simply pointing out the truth.”
You chuckled, feeling a warmth spread through your body. An easy comfort filled you, forgetting the heavy insecurity that haunted you, even if only for a short while. “The truth?” you asked softly, gazing up at him with a loving gaze.
He chuckled softly. “Yes, the truth. How many times must I declare your beauty until you finally believe me?” he smiled, brushing this thumb over your cheek.
“More times than I deserve perhaps. but I'll always be happy to hear it.” You smiled.
Benedict shook his head with a soft laugh. “I adore you, you know. I love everything about you. And I think you are the most beautiful woman.” he declared gently. “And I am so happy to have you as my wife.”
Those words said so easily had such an impact on you. Gently, his lips met yours in a soft sweet kiss. Your eyes closed as you let the moment take over you.
Everything was easier with Benedict. Even the harder days were easier to bear because of him. “I adore you too.” You whispered against his lips as you slowly opened your eyes. The worries from before, now replaced with something warm and loving.
Benedict smiled, letting out a soft breath of relief. Seeing the moments when your eyes twinkled with love and happiness were as thrilling as falling in love with you. He loved it. He loved you.
“Now, as much as I want to devour every inch of you, we do have a party to attend to.” He reminded you, bringing his hands to gently grasp yours. “And we’ve left the carriage waiting for too long.”
You nodded with a soft laugh. “Indeed we do.” You squeezed his hands, feeling reassured and ready to go now.
You glanced at yourself in the mirror once more. Your reflection looked just a little different now. Warmer, loved, adored. A necklace as a symbol of your love and your husband admiring you like he was looking at something precious. When you felt that little tug of worry, you shook the thought away and turned back to Benedict.
You were beautiful. Those thoughts may never leave you but Benedict saw the beauty you couldn’t quite see and for now, that was enough.
“Alright. Let’s go.” You smiled.
i haven't written in a short while but i hope it was okay
