Jakâs Very Small List of His Top 3 Albums of 2015⢠- Number 3: âDopamineâ â BĂRNS
When I find artists/albums I like, Iâll binge. I can loop an album for days, weeks, and sometimes even months (I listened to MGMTâs Congratulations exclusively from May 2013 to August 2013). While three albums might not seem like a lot, collectively, they represent about 4-6 months of what I listened to this year. Enjoy.
In 2015, I musically decided to stop being such a hipster and embraced the fact that I like pop music. While I still canât stand a lot of the stuff that dominates the radio these days (Iâm still not a fan of listening to dance music when Iâm not at a club???), I now know in my heart that there is nothing wrong with catchy choruses, simple chords, and sparkly production.
I had a lot of fun with Taylor Swiftâs 1989Â (which would have made this list if it came out in 2015), and my runner up The Fool by Ryn Weaver, but the pop album that really stole my heart this year was Dopamine, by BĂRNS.
The album is full of shimmering falsettos and dreamy synths, and every song could (should?) be played on the radio. The pacing is just right, and the record is a really palatable 40 minutes. I canât think of a single instance where the album finished, and my immediate reaction wasnât just to start back again at the beginning.
Standouts for me include âDug My Heartâ, âOvernight Sensationâ, and âCloudsâ, but every song has something different to enjoy about it. I probably looped the album 30-40 times in October, and still play it 3-5 times a week, with no real signs of slowing at this point.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This album was mad chill and I wish it came out in the summer.â
