“i think he was scared of me givin’ him homework or something.” leo agrees and chuckles softly. “yeah, two whole months a’ freedom.” he nods. “it’s always takes a few days to get my footin’ with not running around every day.”

“I bet. Got all that time on your hands to do whatever you want for a whole summer. What are you gonna end up doin’ with all your free time?”

“I don’t know about just alright, my ma’s got a really good pecan pie recipe, can’t compare to anything in the stores. I’ll definitely have to try that banana cream pie though! I usually always have pie-themed birthday parties, you know, since I was born on March 14th.”

“---March 14th, is that National Pie day or something? Wait, no-- that’s in winter, sometime in January, I think.”

“I think that banana flavored anything does not taste like banana in any sense. If I wanted to taste banana creme pie I would just make a banana creme pie. That way it would actually taste like banana,” she shook her head. “No, pumpkin isn’t bad but not my favorite. I prefer a classic, like strawberry, but I also think the english toffee is good.”

“--You should make a banana cream pie and give me some,” Colton replied, easily distracted by the thought of someone making his favorite kind of pie. “But I do think the custard tastes like it, maybe it’s all in my head.” He grimaced. “I only like pumpkin pie on Thanksgivin’-- otherwise it just doesn’t taste right. Strawberry’s good, though-- I don’t even know how much of it I ate at the festival,” he chuckled. “Alright, English Toffee is acceptable, I approve.”

“So you agree,” Annie grinned, tilting her head just so. She knew Colton well enough to know that the glazed look in his eyes wasn’t because he was listening to her, but because he was staring at her –not that she minded being appreciated. Still, she couldn’t help but tease him. “You also think now’s a perfect time for us t’have a baby. Better get crackin’.” 

Colton blinked back at Annie, caught off-guard before he began chuckling under his breath, glancing around to see if anyone had heard her-- he leaned towards her, his eyes lit up with amusement as he smirked down at her. “You’re right. Let’s do it right now,” he teased. “Give everyone a free show.” He resisted the urge to take her hand and bring it to his lips to kiss her knuckles. “I really gotta be careful what I agree to with you, huh? --I don’t think we should have a baby just yet, but practice does make perfect.”

“You know, Colt, not all of us are accustomed to farm life, where y’all wake up at the crack of dawn,” Janet replied. “In fact, I probably went to bed right around the time you woke up.”

“---Haven’t you ever heard ‘early bird gets the worm’? Bennett would be on my ass if I just walked onto the farm whenever I felt like it. --What were you doin’ up so late, anyways?”

“Can’t, m’contractually obligated to make fun of you anytime you do literally anything. Baby of the family thing, you wouldn’t get it.” Hazel reached out to affectionately squeeze his cheek. “M’just concerned you’re goin’ for that Tom Hanks in Castaway look, Colt.”

Swatting her away, Colton laughed, shaking his head at his little sister. “If only Mama and Pop woulda just stopped at me,” he teased. “Hey, he won awards for that movie. And besides, other people like it. And it keeps my face warm.”

“Don’t get me wrong –Plantation Praline and Mint Chocolate Chip are in a close tie as my favorite flavors, ‘n this might be controversial, but tonight’s a perfect night for a cone of Watermelon Cooler, dont’cha think?” (@frostfordstart​)

“--Hm?” Colton blinked, realizing Annie had asked him a question-- he’d been too busy watching her, thinking about how beautiful she looked-- she always looked beautiful, but every so often he found himself looking at her and thinking just how lucky he was. “--Oh, yeah, absolutely, baby,” he replied, giving her a wry grin-- hoping she didn’t notice he hadn’t been paying attention.

“Care for a cookie? I made three batches this weekend. Had nothing else to do, ‘cause all the men in this town seem to have given up on the concept of courtship altogether!”

“--You know I ain’t ever been one to pass on cookies, or anythin’ sweet,” Colton replied with a chuckle. “What d’you mean? Someone stand you up or somethin’?”

“Well damn, Hunter-- who pissed in your grits this mornin’? It’s 8:30 in the mornin’-- the sun’s been up for hours.”

Asia had just finished taking care of some deposits she needed to make at the bank when she decided to take what she thought would be a peaceful stroll down Main S., maybe even stop inside one of the shops to say hi to a friend. Fate would have other plans as during her walk, someone tried to get her attention and she had to take out an Airpod out to properly hear them. “Yes?” She asked, trying not to come off as annoyed as she was that someone disrputed her Beyonce playlist. 

“--I was sayin’ good mornin’, Lowry,” Colton replied with a chuckle. “I’m on my way to grab a cup of coffee, you want anythin’?” he asked, stifling a yawn as he stuffed his hands into his pockets. “I wake up at the crack of dawn almost every day but I still just can never get used to it, feel like I could use a coffee and maybe one of those energy drinks. You ever see how people mix the two together? Looks nasty but I’m willin’ to try it maybe.”

“Do you have… any other tips on how I could help with a sunburn?” Bo asked the person in front of him at Dixie Drug. Crowded in his arms were at least six bottles of aloe vera, all because his mama had called his sunburn simply atrocious. It wasn’t that he wasn’t used to getting sunburnt while working at the orchard, but the first sunburn of the hotter season always made mama a little nervous. “I have a feeling this… ain’t gon’ cut it.” @frostfordstart​

Glancing over his shoulder, Colton let out a snort and shook his head. “--My mama used to have us soak in cool baths when we got real bad sunburns. Think she even added oatmeal and stuff, but it was kinda gross,” he replied. “Y’all gettin’ ready for the busy season over at the orchard? I’ve been hearin’ it’s gonna be the busiest yet.”

“You really should look into gettin’ some crystals. I recommend at least turquoise because it’s a lucky stone. Turquoise beads date all the way back to 5,000 B.C., y’know,” Scarlett said, matter-of-factly. “I promise they actually work and they’re not all bullshit, even though you might think they are.”

“Mm... I don’t know-- I don’t really know much ‘bout all that stuff,” Colton replied, giving her an uncertain look. “It’s not that I think it’s bullshit, I just don’t feel like I know enough ‘bout it to really do it. Besides, isn’t it sorta considered witchcraft, or somethin’? My mama wouldn’t be too keen to hear about me doing that. Would tell me I need to be baptized again or somethin’.”

“See, I just wanna know what your favorite album of the year so far is? There are so many good ones already! 2020 ain’t backin’ down, yet.”

“---I gotta be honest, I think the last thing I listened to was Johnny Cash or George Strait, maybe? I can’t remember anything from this year I’ve listened to. My, uh, friend’s always makin’ fun of me for playin’ the same music over and over again. Y’know how people used to burn CD’s and stuff? --I still listen to a bunch of those from high school.”

“For the millionth time,” Santiago paused, shaking his head. “the answer is no.” / @frostfordstart​

“--C’mon, I ain’t that bad of a dancer, I’m a quick learner-- honest.” Colton grinned as he took a sip of his beer. “Just teach me a couple of moves and I won’t bother you ‘bout it again.”

“Not a chance, you’re safe. There’s no anger left. If anythin’ you’re gonna get an apology next time that you see her.” Hannah had been more embarrassed than angry when she’d come home. “I promise you she’s not still mad. You’re completely safe from anymore anger. No need to worry about carryin’ a white flag in your pocket just in case ya run in to her.”

“---You sure? She ain’t gonna come out here and kick my head clean off?” Colton grinned, feeling a little relieved knowing Hannah wasn’t upset with him anymore. “I still feel pretty bad ‘bout causin’ her any stress or anythin’-- so I figure one of these days when y’all want a date night or somethin’, maybe a few hours to yourselves-- you could bring the kids on by to the farm.”
