What I'm loving with the recent episodes that we are getting is that the two of them are gradually changing each other and mirroring each other.
Just take this scene by example. Look at their hair.
Changyu has blue in her hair, which is Zheng color code.
And look at Zheng, he has red in his hair, which is Changyu color code.
Slowly they are getting and implementing fragments of each other in very subtle ways. And it is shown in sublte ways as well in directing and characters choice.
Here in the scene when Changyu is intimidating the 3 guys, she is wearing her husband cape.
Which is a subtle showcase, for the audience, to see that she is implementing (even subconsciously) her husband way of behaving. She wants to give a different aura, a new dimension to herself to impress them and so she is using the cape of her husband, which is more respected/feared. And she knows that even subconsciously.
Because mind you we know that he is the marquis, she does not, she only saw how people behaved around him when he was showing power simply as her matrilocal husband.
Now another moment is shown in directing that she is sharing more with Zheng, mirroring him. And it is clear only to us the audience.
The way this scene was shot, her in dark, then her face coming to light, her facial expression, clearly resonates with Zheng when someone went into their house.
Its the same directing, camera away from the character, then towards the character and a play with the light to shine on their face. It is a clear parallel.
And it's meant only for us the viewer to understand how similar they are to each other.
It is a brilliant way of directing by adding subtle touches like these that makes the show so incredible.
