THE GIRL, THE GOAT, THE LEGEND
Something I genuinely wish was explored more in the ATLA universe/fandom is how Katara is the last waterbender of the Southern Tribe. Like, I understand why it's not spoken about as much as Aang being the last airbender, because he is simply the only airbender left. But Katara is the last link in her entire tribes history of bending.
Sure, the Northern Tribe might have benders, but they have such a different culture/identity around bending compared to the South. We see in Hama's flashbacks that the Southern Tribe had male and female benders at the helm, fighting equally, learning the same things, sharing the same tactics. They weren't left behind as strictly healers or defenseless women given a man's gift, they were strong.
And the thing that separates Katara and Aang's stories being the last benders of their nations is that Aang remembers what it means to be an Air Nomad. There are obviously blind spots because of how young he was, but Aang knows the customs and the culture and spiritual practices. He was able to pass those down to Tenzin and his grandchildren, he was able to start the process of rebuilding what was lost.
But Katara? She was even younger than Aang was when the Southern waterbenders were eradicated. There are Southern practices that are most definetly just... a fractured part of history because she never got to experience them. There are ways of hunting, of building, of navigating the waters, ways of healing, probably even spiritbending, that are simply lost to time.
And maybe her grandmother can clue her into it, memories from a nonbender living aside benders, but it's not the same. She didn't get to hear it from the waterbenders, she didn't get to learn from a Southern waterbender, she doesn't even know what to rebuild because it was never something she was versed in.
That's why The Puppet Master is such a heartbreaking episode. Because Hama could have been the Southern teacher Katara clearly wanted, she could have shown her more, but ended up passing on her legacy of Bloodbending. And on the inverse, I can't even fully call Hama a villain for wanting Katara to know how to bloodbend, because the ache of thinking you were the only one left for so long, the rage against a Nation known for destroying nations, would've driven anyone insane.
We know that Tenzin felt an intense pressure to keep rebuilding Air Nomad culture, but I'm so convinced that Kya probably felt something similar with Southern waterbending.
You know, it just sits so right with me that Zuko was that one tired dad just trying to take care of what they were supposed to be taking care of when they were when Zuko was fixing the ship 🤣
Also bonus for Katara looking at the big picture aka the untrustworthy red flags of this question mark of a new character Tagah and his undue emotional influence on Aang and sketchy character/behavior (Katara looking out for the wellbeing of the group and Zuko focusing on the practical problem/mission facing them 👌)
never kill yourself you might live long enough for your favorite cartoon that ended twenty years ago to start baiting you with a ship whose fandom subsists on nothing but shoulder touches and potential
this is a good reason to stay alive actually

I can’t believe the new avatar movie included both Zuko and Sokka saying men are hot and Sokka calling Zuko pretty. It really sounds like a shitpost I wrote at 13
they're both stupid.
All these people think love’s for show                          But I would die for you in secret.

so cute!!
in 2017, ed wrote this lyric in end game about him and his now-wife… the fact that it also had prophetic implications re: taylor’s wedding weekend in 2026 is absolutely insane
Three different Taylor songs have played during my layover. Shake It Off, Willow, and Sweet Nothings 🫶💜 Life can be beautiful.
The Detroit airport keeps playing Willow every time I’m here like it knows the meaning that song and that album combined with this city hold for me.

About the "ICE detention centre guy" at the wedding since apparently nobody knows how to research for better or worse:
There were two Steven Demetrious at the wedding, both were pictured there
Demetriou JR is a Republican house representative (wikipedia)
Demetriou SR is the Executive Chair of Amentum Holdings (source)
Amentum Holdings is a huge company with several government contracts, one of which includes a $453m contract awarded in March 2026 to be sole contractor at Camp East Montana in El Paso (wikipedia)
They were invited because Demetriou SR is the adopted father of Reggie King, one of Travis' closest friends from childhood (source)
Make of that what you will! Perhaps the lesson can be to double check our information instead of believing whichever social media post suits our preference
All these tourists having a great time at the World Cup isn't surprising b/c the first rule of America is that this place rules if you have money to blow and it's a nightmare if you don't. The prohibitively high cost of attending the World Cup filtered out all the ppl who don't have money so all the people who actually made it to the U.S. are basically guaranteed to have fun
