A lot of these places are called liminal spaces - which means they are throughways from one space to the next. Places like rest stops, stairwells, trains, parking lots, waiting rooms, airports feel weird when you’re in them because their existence is not about themselves, but the things before and after them. They have no definitive place outside of their relationship to the spaces you are coming from and going to. Reality feels altered here because we’re not really supposed to be in them for a long time for think about them as their own entities, and when we do they seem odd and out of place.

The other spaces feel weird because our brains are hard-wired for context - we like things to belong to a certain place and time and when we experience those things outside of the context our brains have developed for them, our brains are like NOPE SHIT THIS ISN’T RIGHT GET OUT ABORT ABORT. Schools not in session, empty museums, being awake when other people are asleep - all these things and spaces feel weird because our brain is like “I already have a context for this space and this is not it so it must be dangerous.” Our rational understanding can sometimes override that immediate “danger” impulse but we’re still left with a feeling of wariness and unease. 

It started with someone listing "places with uncanny energy," like gas stations on a road trip, empty movie theaters, etc.

Then someone reblogged it and said those are called "liminal spaces," defining liminal as in-between, neither one thing nor another.

Tomorrow (July 4th, 2026) is the 10 year anniversary of the-crepes-of-wrath's comment, which:

Predates the 2020 spike in interest by four years

Predates the original backrooms post, and the the creation of r/liminalspaces by three years

Predates the earliest mention that KnowYourMeme attributes to Twitter by two years

I'm pretty sure this is the moment the term "liminal spaces" was attached to this sort of imagery, and it's TEN YEARS OLD TOMORROW!

the-crepes-of-wrath did not invent the concept nor did they claim to! liminality was conceptualized by folklorists / anthropologists, initially to describe a three-part process of rites of passage. the wikipedia page goes into all kinds of contexts liminality has been applied in. unfortunately a lot of people do not know this & think "liminal" is just a word for "spooky or uncanny." a shame imo!

A young woman is imprisoned in a castle by a monstrously formed prince. The servants of the castle hope for them to fall in love, and when the spell is broken they assume their prayers have been answered. They are all surprised, but nonetheless pleased, when it is revealed to them that the young woman and prince are the truest of friends, and nothing more.

They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen, a woman who is incapable of loving. She is unmarried, she has no consorts, and she wishes for no partner. She is the wretched queen, the heartless queen. She must hate her daughter, for her daughter is beautiful, and women are incapable of liking another woman who’s prettier than themselves. It must be for this reason that the princess was sent away, not for how she was attacked by a man in the woods. They say the kingdom is ruled by an evil queen because she cannot love. The queen loves her daughter, and that is enough for them both.

There lives a prince who is forced to choose a bride at the ball. He meets many beautiful women, but find none which he loves. He spies one in a gorgeous gown and wonder in her eyes, and he dances with her all night long. The kingdom is sure he has found his bride. When the clock strikes midnight he tells her how he will never love a woman, or a man, in the way he is expected to. The beautiful woman smiles and tells him she expects nothing from him. The next morning the prince and the beautiful woman are missing, having run off together to see the world. They leave their shoes behind in their haste.

I was at a community party/event (free pizza) and drawing quietly to myself when I noticed a kid (painting) had stopped and was looking over my shoulder. The child could not have been more than 8, but they were utterly enraptured by my doodles.

The Child (tm) asked what I was drawing, and I explained to her the lore of my world, the dragon tethers, and of Cosmo the Apple Dragon. And then the kid goes "I wanna give you an idea for your story!"

A bit surprised, I go, "Oh, okay!" And then the kid starts telling me about their Wings of Fire self insert that's half dragon, half human, and their Wings of Fire AU where all the dragons can turn into people and they're also friends with Moon and Quibli and a sister to Ice!

And, y'know, I started drawing it. Because I did NOT wade through the fields of cringe culture in the DeviantArt era just to perpetuate the cycle decades later. Self insert oc's are fun actually and this kid deserves to have a little fanart as a treat! We talked for like half an hour while I drew for the Child (tm).

And so, we called her "Blue"

"You can always make a story where she's alongside the main characters too." I told the Child

The Child looked at me with eager eyes, "Could you do that?"

I grinned, knowing that this child was destined to discover fanfiction, "Not me! Only you can write that story!"

Eventually their parent came by and they had to leave me be. But as I left, I saw them, waved at them, and called out, "Bye Blue! It was nice to meet you!" And the Child looked so stunned for a moment before they got sooooo excited and waved back with the biggest grin you've ever seen
