No Christmas in Cold Spring.
This is awful. From the Putnam County News & Recorder.
No Christmas Lights
In a piece of bad news, the Mayor announced that Village officials met with Central Hudson earlier in the week to discuss the annual installation of holiday lights along Main Street. They were told by the power company that the village could no longer string lights across the street from pole to pole and would have to secure the poles at a cost to the village.
Shoring up the poles would entail running guy wires from each pole down to the ground in an unsightly manner. Falloon passed around a rendering of what it could look like; everyone agreed that it was not conducive to Main Street.
Falloon said this was the last year lights could be strung.
The Mayor said he “begged and pleaded” for another year, but Central Hudson told him Cold Spring is the only community that has been allowed to install lights in that manner on the grid. The utility company cited that the weight of snow that collects on the decorations.
If the village chose to allow the utility to erect the extra poles, the work would cost the village $12,000.

Private School for Cold Spring?
I work in real estate and know that a a lot of people move to Cold Spring to avoid paying private school tuition in the city. It’s part of the draw. So what’s up with this?

A River Walk.
A walkway along the river connecting Cold Spring to Beacon is a great idea and would go a long way toward making 9d a safer road. On weekends the road is crowded with foot traffic and cars parked along both sides as hikers jockey for a chance to scramble up Breakneck Ridge. The feds need to cough up some cash, if only for the sake of public safety.

The loss of a dog.
This morning I came upon a man crying by the side of the Appalachian Trail. I asked if he needed any help and he explained that he was visiting the spot where he buried his dog a few years back. We spoke briefly and I left him to his memories. On the hike home I never took my eyes off my own dog. Their lives are so short and they give us so much.
