なぜお婆さんたちのご先祖は、代々ここで暮らしていたのか？それは戦乱で日本が貧しく、インフラが未熟だった時代（間近では昭和20年代）には、都市に住んでいるよりも、山あいに住んだ方が、清潔な水、食べ物、燃料、建材が、お金ではなく労働と協調によって手に入り、生きやすかったからです。こうした集落の多くは平家の落人、戦国時代起源の伝説を持ち、新しいところでは敗戦直後の満洲帰還者の戦後開拓として始まった所が多いのです。先のお婆さんも、戦後の飢餓の時代も麦があったから食べ物には困らなかったと言っていました。彼らは自分の事は自分で出来る、お金に頼らず生きて行ける力を持つ、逞しい知恵と力の持ち主です。食べ物を収穫し、うまく保存し、炭を作り、製材をする。先行きの見えない今の時代、人が最も必要とする確かなものではないかな、と思うのです。
