CAGELESS PRISONER

twelve  years  on  his  own,  with  nary  a  familiar  face  to  cross  his  path,  and  now  suddenly  he’s  been  confronted  with  not  one  but  two  ghosts  from  his  past   ?   he’s  seriously  regretting  the  decisions  that  brought  him  to  san  francisco  in  the  first  place  …  and  whatever  strange  magic  keeps  him  from  leaving.   (   he  can  leave.  has,  actually,  on  a  few  occasions,  but  something  keeps  drawing  him  back  in  like  a  supernatural  magnet.   he  can’t  say  he’s  a  fan.  )   he  comes  up  beside  enzo  like  only  a  minute’s  passed  since  they  last  saw  each  other,  let  alone  the  reality  of  the  years  that  stretched.  “  yeah,  she’s  a  karen  alright.  haircut  and  everything. ”   he  screws  up  his  features,  arms  crossed  low  over  his  chest.   “  they  taste  like  it  too.  maybe  it’s  all  the  extra  salt. ”

                         something    C U L T I V A T I N G   about  familiar  faces  from  times  before  hearts  had  been  torn  out  and  time  was  left  to  move  on:  a  string  holding  onto  some  unrelenting  pang  of  pain...though  he’d  come  to  terms  with  his  own  end  long  ago  —-  finds  something  reflecting  the  opposite  in  his  old  friend  (  loses and time; he’s not oblivious to its hardships  ).  he  steps  cautiously;  there’s  something  UNCERTAIN  about  the  mess  the  other  man  is  in  as  if  a  wave  is  hitting  rocks  he  couldn’t  look  past...not  without  something  more  tangible  to  hold  on  to.  eyes  seeming  to  easily  find  familiar  hunting  ground,  eliciting  a  comfort  beneath  his  skin  (  few people were capable of that but he’d leave feeding egos to a more...purposeful occasion  ).  “ all the LOVELY sodium of a happy meal, well —- unhappy meal may be more fitting; certainly don’t get any happy little extras with those. ”  a  light  sentiment  almost,  some  ease  in  turning   slightly  in  the  chair  to  direct  his  attention  more  to  the  other  man.  “ you’re a welcome party without the flair. so... ”  lips  pursing  in  some  mock  effort  to  add  a  little  POISE  to  his  stature  at  present,  eyes  settling  far  more  kindly  than  the  eye  watching  and  patiently  waiting  for  answers  (  hardly took a genius to take note of the warning signs  ).  “ guessing, bad year...huh, buddy? ”
