On June 21st, we witches of the Northern hemisphere will celebrate Midsummer. We have arrived at the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The earth is awash with fertility and fulfilment, and this is a time of joy and celebration, of expansiveness and the celebration of your achievements. It is a turning point.

Rituals to celebrate:

🥳 With people, dance, dance, dance! Out of all the witches festival, this one is the most festive and fun, so go out there and enjoy yourself.

🍽️ In the kitchen, use lemon in everything: your salads, sea food, cakes, tea, everywhere.

🎨 Get crafty, by making a sun-catcher and hanging it at your window to get even more sunlight into the house.

💃 Dress up, with shades of deep green and yellow to represent the union of earth and sun.

📜 Write in your journal, about a difficult topic that needs addressing in the second half of the year. Midsummer is the turning point in the wheel of the year; from now on, the days will grow shorter.

You can usually find books on witchcraft, yes, but there’s also field guides on local foraging and wildlife, cookbooks, books that teach you how to craft and DIY, books about environmental protection and stewardship, books on how to use herbs medicinally, books about other religions, cultures, and spiritual practices. My favorite local library even has a seed swapping program and fantastic resources to research your own family history!

Rituals and spells

Introduce yourself to the deck, explain your intentions, and create a respectful spiritual bond with it.

Use your tarot deck regularly to build a stronger connection over time.

Discover your personal tarot card through repeated appearances in important readings.

Respect the deck’s original identity and name instead of renaming it.

Do not “cleanse” tarot decks, as their accumulated energy and memories are considered valuable.

Avoid asking the same question repeatedly unless circumstances truly change.

Use tarot for meaningful and emotionally important questions rather than shallow curiosity.

Do not read tarot to spy on others or invade their privacy without consent.

Do not judge readings too quickly; their meaning may become clear later.

Do not use another deck just to verify whether the first answer was correct.

Strong emotions can strengthen readings, but they must be focused clearly on the question.

Always thank your tarot deck and appreciate its guidance and personality.

A little something for when life insists on kicking your ass.

Materials

Red candle

Black peoper

Coffee grounds

Dress the candle with coffee grounds and pepper or sprinkle the two in a circle around the base of the candle.

As you light the candle, think about what's been weighing you down. Don't hide from it. Face it. Embrace it. Think about all the things you've survived before, and how you're still here.

Take a moment to focus on the flame. Feel the warmth and take comfort in it.

As summer is approaching, I thought I'd post about my witchcraft practice at the beach...

🐚 Use the sea water to cleanse your body and soul. Breathe in deeply, dive in, and spend a few seconds underwater to recite in your head "I'm getting rid of anything that isn't serving me, and release it all to the ocean".

🐚 Draw sigils onto the sand. It's a simple one, but can be quite powerful, especially if you keep on drawing it repeatedly as you sunbathe.

🐚 Whisper a protection spell as you apply suncream. This isn't just about protecting yourself from UV light. This simple act of self-care can ward off much more than that.

🐚 Collect shells for your altar. I think this one is my favourite. I'm always on the lookout for small items with strong significance to decorate my altar. Shells are the perfect items to have in preparation for Midsummer.

🐚 Sand has a strong association to time. Use it for any spells that require you to slow down and be in the present. Depending on where you are, the sand between your hands may be a thousand years old!

🐚 Meditate at sunrise, facing towards the ocean. Repeat wishes and manifestations while breathing in the salt air. If you ask something of the waves, you might just get it.
