If he were in Inaba right now, he would be heading to Aiya’s instead of standing awkwardly in the doorway. Instead, Yu lets his fingers drop so he looks less likely to vacate the room and slide the door back into place. “What club is it?”

            it’s here that she hesitates, unsure of whether she wants to be honest and embarrass herself further, or compose a lie that, given her disposition, would make the validity of her claim questionable at best.   ‘ you’re going to laugh ‘  dies on her tongue, bitten back with each nibble of her lower lip.  he’s been polite, indulged  ( pitied? )  her thus far, when he could have easily walked away  --  who’s to say he won’t turn tail if she’s honest?

His fingers rest on the frame of the sliding door a little more securely as he glances furtively around the room. “Why are you here alone?” It’s soft—curious.

          OF  COURSE  MONIKA  DIDN’T  UNDERSTAND.  sweet monika.  driven monika.  flawless, perfect monika.  yuri wasn’t anything special, didn’t have the same bravery or notable traits as the heroines in her books, facing each new page with an unyielding stoicism despite hardships far worse than her own.  she’d been foolish to expose her weakness  –  and to monika, of all people! ;  she knows this now, with her friend‘s  ( ??? )  emerald eyes furrowed in something that she, despite clear words otherwise, would like to think was concern.  

         what exactly had she sought to accomplish by admitting her… habit?  obsession?  even after shaky, uncertain fingers had rolled sleeves past the myriad of still - healing cuts and gouges on her forearms, the lack of reaction on monika’s face had been nothing short of nauseating.  had she already known?  and how?  of all people, she’d assumed monika  –  strong, wise, confident monika  –  would be able to advise or comfort her.  

        now, she realizes, it was a foolish thought.  there was no trace of kindness in those eyes, no sympathy to be found from a girl who deemed those around her lesser beings.  embarrassed, she averts her gaze and hurriedly shoves the sleeve back down to cover her shame, lowered head and hunched posture suddenly making her seem as small and insignificant as her personality.
