summary: you have a massive secret, and no itâs not your relationship with super-senior and star player for uconn, paige bueckers. itâs that you have a daughter.Â
pairing: uconn!paige x uconn!teammate!reader
featuring: a plotline so unrealistic yâall better not take this too seriously; teammates to lovers; dialogue from that one scene in love island; a gazillion bluey referencesÂ
word count: 3.7kÂ
you always say there are three loves of your life: basketball, your daughter, and paige bueckers.Â
you fell in love with the game of basketball at a young age. while your parents thought the local rec league on saturday mornings was a great way for you to meet other kids and blow off some steam, the game quickly became much more. you picked up dribbling way too fast, and you were shooting from a real free throw line way too early. then you were playing up in leagues, and getting calls from different aau coaches. in high school, you easily took on the role of varsity starter as a freshman, so when college coaches came calling, you were more than ready.Â
your love for your daughter, jovie, was inherent. despite her unexpected appearance into your life, you never saw jovie as a weakness. she was born during your senior year of high school, after the basketball season ended. jovie was a blessing, bringing happiness and joy into your life. you took immense pride in taking care of her, just like you took pride in playing basketball at the collegiate level. that didnât mean, however, that you wanted everyone to know about your daughter.
there was no need for jovie to grow up in the spotlight. she didnât need the camera panning to her in the crowd at your games. you didnât need to see her name next to yours in articles about how you underperformed in a game. jovie was a child, and she deserved to grow up like any other child: privately and carefree. so thatâs why you kept her hidden, even from your girlfriend, paige.Â
you fell in love with paige bueckers unexpectedly. it was like getting struck by lightning; one minute youâre fine, the next your brain is fried. paige was easy to connect with. she was funny and talented, but also humble and understanding. befriending paige as a freshman was the easiest thing about college, you willingly admit that. keeping secrets from her was harder.Â
paige is nosey, incredibly so, and while sheâd never admit that, itâs something the entire team can agree on. when she heard that you lived in your own apartment, with no roommates, she started asking questions. for a while, you got away with vague answers, but then paige set her sights on you. she was easy to love, and you were even easier to fall for; finally, in your senior year, you agreed to let her take you on a date. one date turned into three. three dates turned into a night spent at her apartment while jovie stayed with her father. a night at paigeâs apartment turned into her asking to be your girlfriend. paige asking to be your girlfriend turned into you telling her about jovie.Â
âhow old is she?â paige asks, voice soft.Â
âshe just turned four,â you answer, a loving smile on your face.Â
âwhatâs her name?â she asks, leaning into you now.Â
âjovie,â you answer, pulling up a picture of the two of you on your phone.Â
paige takes the item from your hand, blue eyes locked on the screen. sheâs quiet, which is strange for her, but you understand that this is a lot to process, even for someone so loving and understanding.
âif this changes things,â you start, but paige cuts you off, âit doesnât. it makes me want you more.â
your eyes water at the sincerity in her words. you rest your head against your fist, giving her a watery smile as she hands you the phone back. before you can say anything else, paige starts talking again.Â
âyouâre so strong, for raising a beautiful daughter and playing d1 basketball all at once. she has an amazing mother, and sheâs incredibly lucky,â paige assures, rubbing soothing circles on your thigh.Â
âpaige,â you whisper, voice wobbling.Â
âiâm serious. and while i wish you told me sooner, i canât even imagine the pressure and stress you are under, not only to perform on the court, but also as a mother. i want you in my life, jovie too,â she finishes, leaning in to kiss your cheek.
you wipe at your cheeks, which are suddenly damp with tears. âi love you,â you say, voice wavering.Â
âi love you too,â she whispers, placing a kiss on the corner of your lips.Â
you pull her in for a real kiss: soft, slow, and full of love. when you pull away, foreheads touching, you ask the million dollar question, âdo you want to meet her?âÂ
âcan i?â paige whispers, a nervous look in her eyes.Â
âyouâre my girlfriend paige, and i donât plan on losing you any time soon,â you start, âso if you want to meet her, iâd like you too.âÂ
paige nods, grabbing your hand as you get up from the couch in her apartment. you both slip on your shoes, before walking hand in hand to your place further down the floor. you give her a reassuring smile before turning the key in the lock.Â
âjovie! iâm home baby,â you call, walking into the hallway, where her bright pink twinkle toes are sitting in the middle of the floor.Â
âmommy!â she cries, crashing into your open arms as you smother her with kisses. jovie giggles, trying to push your face away as you hug her tighter.Â
meanwhile, paige stands awkwardly by the door, with her hands in the pockets of her sweatpants. sheâs locked in on the scene in front of her: jovie rambling while you listen intently.Â
âjovie! did you let mommy inside?â someone calls from further into the apartment, drawing paigeâs attention to the guy standing in your kitchen. heâs obviously jovieâs father, and itâs clear you both have a co-parenting thing going on. paige meets his eyes, and he smirks in her direction, but itâs lighthearted.Â
âyou must be paige,â he greets, holding out a hand for her to shake.Â
paige shakes his hand, smiling as he introduces himself.Â
âdaddy made bunny pasta!â jovie cheers while you lift her onto your hip.Â
âmmm, your favorite, baby,â you say, while she nods excitedly.Â
âbefore we eat,â you start, lowering your voice, âi want to meet someone very special.â you then look at paige, and jovie follows your gaze, eyes landing on the tall blonde.Â
âthis is mommyâs friend paige, and she really wants to meet you,â you whisper, while jovie hides in your shoulder.Â
you rock her gently, mouthing a sorry to paige who doesnât seem to mind. her eyes are wide and awestruck as she watches you take care of jovie, helping to calm her down.Â
âcan you say hi to paige, baby?â you ask, gesturing towards her with your chin.Â
jovie looks at paige again, who gives her a small wave before smiling. âmomma she looks like luckyâs mom,â jovie announced and you laugh at her comparison.Â
âshe does look like luckyâs mom. they both have blonde hair,â you agree, throwing paige a soft smile.Â
jovie gestures to be put down, and you happily oblige. she walks over to paige, who waits with baited breath for jovie to say something. âdo you like bunny pasta?â she asks.Â
âitâs my favorite,â paige agrees, even though sheâs never eaten any in her life.Â
jovieâs eyes light up, and she tugs eagerly on paigeâs hand. âmine too! you can use my tinkerbell bowl, since mommy says we have to share.âÂ
paige nods, mumbling something about how she loves tinkerbell while you give her a small thumbs up and a soft smile.Â
after their first meeting, paige easily integrates into jovieâs daily routine. the preschooler looks forward to afternoons, when she watches bluey with paige, who now realized what it means to look like luckyâs mom. in the mornings, while you do her hair before lift and preschool, jovie talks to âher paigeyâ (the nickname she uses for you girlfriend) on facetime. you always insist that paige doesnât have to easily integrate jovie into her life, but she always denies your claims, even including the young girl in her pregame rituals. before every game, home and away, jovie gives paige a hug and kiss on the cheek, something that was once reserved for just you. itâs not a secret that jovie is becoming increasingly more attached to paige, and you only wonder what her relationship with the team would look like.Â
while the blonde is still respectful of your choices to keep your daughter private, that doesnât stop her from trying to convince you that introducing jovie to the team is the right move.
âkk and ice cannot keep anything to themselves,â you say, when paige brings up the topic again one night with jovie in bed.Â
âi think theyâd be able to this time,â paige argues, and you give her a deadpanned look.
âpaige, be serious, we said that about us and somehow still ended up making out in the back of iceâs live,â you explain, with a knowing smile on your face.Â
paige laughs, leaning her head back as she looks at the ceiling. âbut this is different, so i feel like they would be more respectful,â she continues.Â
âyeah it is different. this features a four year old. i donât want her to grow up with people watching her because her mom is dating the number one draft pick,â you explain.
âokay relax with the draft talk. we still have march madness,â she teases, âbut i know what you mean. she deserves to just be a kid.â
âexactly,â you agree.Â
âbut maybe you could at least consider telling them before tournament play?â paige begs with a small pout.Â
you smile, shoving her face away from you, but you donât make any promises. the thought, however, continues to cross your mind, even with the looming stress of tournament play hanging over your head. not only are you feeling the pressure to perform on the court â for paige, the fans, and yourself â but also in your academic classes. typically, you can handle it, but jovie is coming down with something. she was up all night coughing, and when you woke up for conditioning this morning, her little face felt a little too warm. thankfully, your mom and her dad were able to watch her while youâre at practice.Â
you know theyâre taking good care of jovie, but your brain is anywhere but the court. you made some baskets and completed most of your plays, but mentally you were thinking about grabbing medications and calling jovieâs pediatrician on the way home. your preoccupied state becomes glaringly obvious, when you miss an absolute dime from paige.Â
âalright sub! ash youâre in!â geno calls, patting your back as you walk off the court to stand on the sidelines.Â
you start talking plays with an assistant coach when your phone rings. the random iphone sound sends a panic down your spine, and you quickly answer the call before stepping to the side of the gym. itâs your mom, and she never calls unless something is wrong.Â
âhey. you okay?â you ask, nerves bubbling in your throat as you feel everyoneâs eyes on you.Â
âsorry i know youâre at practice. we called the pediatrician and they can see jovie now, so weâre gonna take her,â your mom explains.Â
âoh my god is she okay. iâll leave practice now,â you ramble, shoving the phone between your shoulder and ear as you start grabbing your stuff from the sidelines.Â
your mom says your name in that calm, grounding tone only mothers use (you know because you do the same thing to jovie). âwe have everything handled, but i didnât want you to be alarmed if you came home and we werenât back yet.âÂ
âhonestly this is more alarming,â you try to joke, but you know your mom can hear the panic in your voice.Â
âif it will make you feel better to be with her, then leave practice. iâm sure coach auriemma will understand,â she says, and you can hear jovie fighting about putting on her shoes in the back.Â
âjust let me talk to her,â you say, looking over your shoulder as you feel several of your teammatesâ eyes on you.Â
thereâs some rustling over the phone as your mom talks to jovie. while you canât really make out what theyâre saying, you know your mom and jovieâs dad are handling the situation.Â
finally, jovie comes on the line, âhi mommy,â she whispers in a stuffy voice.Â
she sounds downright miserable, and your heart breaks. youâre seriously considering leaving practice to take care of her.Â
âhi baby. how you feeling?â you ask, your voice soft and gentle.Â
âsick,â she answers, and you giggle a little at her straightforward words. âmommy, i donât want to go to the doctor,â she whines, and you can basically hear the tears in her eyes.Â
âoh baby,â you start, âthe doctor is going to help you,â you promise.Â
âi donât want to go,â she whines again, and you hear her dad saying something soothing on the other side of the phone.
âi know, but itâs just like doc mcstuffins says. if you donât go to the doctor, how will you get better?â you say, and jovie huffs.Â
âcan i bring blankie?â she asks. you cringe at the thought of her dragging around her favorite blanket at the hospital, but also know it will bring her immense comfort.Â
âof course you can. and when you, grammy, and daddy get back from the doctorâs, iâll be waiting,â you promise.
âwith my paigey?â she asks, voice taking on a hopeful lift.Â
you cringe again, because youâll feel so guilty if paige gets sick too, but you also know sheâll never refuse jovie. âweâll see. be good at the doctors,â you say, not committing to anything.Â
âokay mommy,â she answers.Â
âi love you,â you whisper.Â
âlove you too mommy,â jovie says, as she passes the phone back to your mother.Â
âtext me,â you demand, waiting for your mom to agree before hanging up the call and returning back to practice.Â
paige, whoâs taking a water break on the sidelines, walks right up to you. she takes in your disheveled state, and places a comforting hand on your waist. you lean into her touch, taking a deep breath to calm her down.Â
âyou okay?â she asks, and you know sheâs genuinely concerned.
you rub a hand over your face, sighing as you finally meet her blue eyes. âjovie was up all night with a cough, and now she has a fever. theyâre taking her to the doctor. i know thereâs nothing i can do, but i feel bad that iâm not there,â you explain.Â
as youâre talking, paige is rubbing soothing circles on your hip. sheâs nodding intently, and her gaze is full of love and understanding. once you get everything off your chest, it registers how much you told her, and you feel a bit embarrassed.
âsorry, i didnât mean to dump that on you,â you whisper.
âbabe,â paige deadpans, âsheâs my jovie. i want to know if something is going on because i care about both of you.â
you smile softly at her, squeezing her hand as a silent thank you and sign of affection. paige smiles back, placing a quick kiss on your forehead as geno calls both of you to sub back into practice. a few more drills and a gazillion texts from your mom later, youâre finally heading back to the locker room to change. youâre throwing your practice jersey into your locker when the questions start rolling.Â
âyou good? that phone call looked serious?â azzi asks, and you can hear the genuine concern in her voice.Â
at this point, youâre completely checked out of practice, so you answer, âyeah. my daughter's sick, so my mom and her dad took her to the doctor.âÂ
the locker room goes silent. itâs so silent, that if a pin dropped, everyone would hear it.
âexcuse me?â ice asks.
suddenly, youâre words catch up with you, and embarrassment floods your cheeks. you turn away from your locker to face the team, who are all staring at you with open mouths and wide eyes. then, you turn to paige who has a sheepish smile on her face while she shakes her head.Â
âiâm a mommy,â you state, wiping your sweaty hands on your shorts as if that will diffuse the tension.Â
âmommy?â yanna asks, but her smile is playful.Â
âiâm a mom,â you confirm with a straight face.Â
âmamacita,â ice jokes, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.Â
you and paige exchange a look, before busting out laughing. the team follows suit, but you can tell that they all still think this is one big joke. how could you be a mom? thereâs no way.Â
âno guys, seriously, iâm a mommy,â you say, trying to take control of the situation.Â
âmom of what? a dog?â kk asks, and more laughter follows.Â
âi have a daughter,â you explain.Â
âlike in real life? not on the sims or something?â ice asks, and you give her a playful shove.Â
âlike a daughter? like a real baby?â kk asks, her hands on her knees as she gives you a shocked look.Â
âyeah,â you answer, âlike a human child.â
âwait, thatâs actually kind of cute,â jana says, looking at you with a soft smile.Â
âhold up,â kk interrupts, âyou have a kid?âÂ
âyes bro, keep up,â you respond teasingly.Â
âhow old is she?â azzi asks, getting serious.Â
âfour. sheâll be five soon,â paige answers for you, a smug smile on her face as everyone now turns to look at her.Â
âwait! paige has met her?â aubrey asks, sounding a little offended.Â
âof course i have. iâm jovieâs paigey,â she answers, her smug smirk staying plastered on her skin.Â
âjovie? is that her name?â azzi asks, getting excited.Â
you nod, reaching into your locker to pull out the picture of the two of you that you keep hidden away. itâs a casual picture, just you and jovie smiling. sheâs in a cute dress, with her twinkle toes of course, while youâre in jeans and a top.Â
âoh my god sheâs beautiful,â azzi whispers, passing the photo around the locker room.Â
âshe takes after her mom,â paige says, nodding in your direction. you laugh loudly at her words, but you donât attempt to refute her claims.Â
âcan we meet her?â sarah, who is normally so quiet, asks.Â
youâre shocked by the request. âyou guys arenât mad?âÂ
âthat you have a kid?â aubrey asks, laughing a little at the absurdity of your question.Â
âno,â you say, sucking your teeth, âthat i kept it a secret.â
âoh no weâre pissed,â azzi mumbles, âbut you're my friend, and iâm sure you had your reasons. plus, jovie needs an auntie,â she finishes, coming over to give you a hug.Â
âshe needs several aunties,â kk says, handing you the photo back as you smile at her.Â
âsheâll like you guys,â paige promises, âbut just know she watches a lot of bluey.âÂ
the girls laugh, but paige is shaking her head with a fond smile on her face, âno like sheâll compare you to bluey characters.âÂ
âthatâs such a kid thing to do,â jana says.
âwhat bluey character are you, paige?â aubrey asks, but your girlfriend takes the question seriously.Â
âiâm luckyâs mom, because we have the same hair and yell at the tv during sports,â paige explains, repeating what jovie says to her every time they watch the decider episode.Â
âand what about you?â kk asks, jutting her chin out in your direction.Â
âsheâs chilli, blueyâs mom,â paige answers, as if itâs the most obvious thing in the world.Â
âright, sorry i donât know every bluey character by heart,â kk replies, holding her hands up in defense.Â
âyeah that'll change,â paige mumbles, packing up her own bag as you finish packing yours.Â
âi promise you guys will meet her once sheâs not sick,â you explain, throwing on a random t-shirt, âbut i really need to go.â
the team all replies with various phrases expressing their understanding and how theyâll see you later. paige follows you out of the locker room, her hand resting gently on the small of your back as she leads you towards your car. she throws your bags in the backseat, while you climb behind the wheel and start up the car.Â
âtheyâre back from the doctor, so iâm just gonna head to the apartment. i think they already got the prescription from cvs,â you explain, pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main road.Â
âsounds good. iâll just stop in, say hi to jovie and then head out. i want her to rest,â paige says, and you hum in agreement, reaching a hand over to squeeze her thigh softly.Â
paige takes your hand in hers, giving in a firm, supportive squeeze as you park your car in your designated spot. you leave your practice bag in the back, while paige quickly shoulders hers and follows you upstairs. your feet pound up the steps as you donât bother to wait for the elevator; youâre too anxious to see your baby.Â
unlocking the door, youâre met with the site of jovieâs shoes in the hallway. walking further into the apartment, you find jovie cuddled up on the couch while your mom stirs a pot at the stove.Â
âmommy,â she whines, and you drop your keys in the bowl before rushing towards her.Â
âiâm here baby,â you whisper, letting her curl into your arms as you lift her from the couch.Â
paige stops to talk to your mom, briefly getting the lowdown on jovieâs condition before joining you in the living room. when her eyes settle on the blonde, jovie immediately reaches out for her. paige takes jovie into her arms, kissing her hairline tenderly as the toddler sinks into your girlfriendâs hold.Â
âhow you feeling?â paige asks, lips brushing against jovieâs warm skin.
âi want cuddles,â she mumbles, face smooshed in the crook of paigeâs neck.Â
âokay baby, letâs lay down,â paige says, lying on the couch with jovie resting on her chest.Â
jovie snuggles into paige, one hand fisting your girlfriendâs hoodie, while she sucks her thumb with the other. paigeâs palm rubs up and down jovieâs spine as she flips on an episode of little bear, which is nice and soothing. within minutes, jovie is dead asleep and while you tell paige she can leave, that youâll take care of it, she refuses.Â
âiâm exactly where i want to be,â she whispers.
so i have three fics in the works, and i want to prioritize the ones people are the most excited about! i still need to finish & edit all of them, but i'm going to work around what y'all are interested in, so here they are:
oth!paige bueckers x reader; season three (aka the third edition of my one tree hill au)
paige bueckers x uconn teammate who is also a mom; the plot is for shits and gigs based off the "i'm a mommy" love island scene
pazzi x younger!reader; no idea where the plot is going, but most likely the last two uconn basketball seasons & reader is kk's age

featuring: friends to lovers trope; the plot of one tree hill season two; allusions to smut, but no actual smut; mentions of homophobia and allusions to a homophobic slur (but nothing is written out); jealous!paige; conversations about a car accident; fluff and angst mostly
summary: the end of junior year at tree hill followed the trends of the semester before it: what was supposed to be a fun year turned into something more. between friends leaving, new people arriving, and relationships changing, the tension is brewing to create an eventful senior year.
the disappointing end to the basketball season is still looming over paige. while you try to be there for her, itâs hard when so many other aspects of your lives are changing. senior year is fast approaching, which means recruitment and decisions for paige. you, on the other hand, are thinking about different programs at different schools: some paige is looking at, and some without her.Â
then, thereâs all the drama within your friend group. paige, nathan, and the entire team are still trying to adjust to lucas moving away with keith. paige will never admit it, but you know she misses the other scott brother. nathan and haley are struggling through married life and brooke and peyton reconnect despite all the lucas drama.Â
âiâm just glad weâre gay,â you confess to paige, swinging your hands as the two of you walk towards the high school.  Â
she looks at you like you dropped a major bomb, before bursting out laughing: âbabe what?âÂ
âthink about it! we donât have to worry about guy drama or liking the same one,â you explain.Â
âlike brooke and peyton?â she asks, when you trail off.Â
âexactly like brooke and peyton,â you say, a small chuckle escaping your lips.Â
paige watches you, struggling to hold back her own laughter as she sees you lighting up.Â
âbut seriously,â you mumble, sobering up, âhe did them dirty. and i know heâs your friend, babe, but heâs also lowkey a player,â you finish while paige opens the school door for you.
âwell good thing heâs moved away,â paige whispers into your ear, bending down so her lips brush the shell of your ear.Â
you lick your lips, swallowing to prevent your throat from drying up. âyeah,â you whisper, âgood thing.â     Â
youâre at your locker with paige, talking about the most recent ap lit assignment, when brooke and peyton arrive at your locker. they both look frazzled, and your immediate reaction is to focus on them.
âwhat?â you ask, looking anxiously between them.
âlucas is back!â brooke seethes.Â
âwhat?â you and paige both ask, except your girlfriend seems a little bit excited.
you throw a subtle glare at the tall blonde over your shoulder, and she throws her hands up in surrender, before gesturing for you to continue.Â
âwell, did you see him?â you ask them.Â
âwe didnât talk if thatâs what youâre asking,â peyton grumbles, angsty as ever.Â
âhe didnât say anything?â you ask, trying to find out more about lucas and his sudden arrival.Â
âitâs probably because of the heart attack,â paige drops, hands in her sweatshirt pocket as she shrugs.Â
âwhat heart attack?â brooke asks, a panicked look in her eyes.Â
âdanâs,â paige deadpans, like itâs common knowledge.Â
âwait a second,â peyton butts in, âdan had a heart attack?â
âyeah. hospitalized and everything,â paige answers.
âyouâre being a little too casual about this,â you mumble, even though you hate dan too.Â
âthe guy sucks. and iâm not gonna say itâs his karma, but itâs definitely his karma,â paige observes, holding her hands up like she didnât just wish something awful upon someone.
âokay whatever,â brooke grumbles, crossing her arms as she looks to you, âweâre ignoring him. got it?â
you nod, âgot it.â
the brunette turns her steely glare on paige, âgot it bueckers?â
paige holds her hands up in surrender, âgot it, brooke.â Â
everyone is on the ignoring lucas train, at least among the cheerleaders, but itâs hard to follow through when he offers to throw nathan and haley a wedding reception. despite being married to your girlfriendâs best friend, you and haley were never really friends. youâre acquaintances at best, but you canât skip out on the reception since you do have a relationship with nathan. peyton and brooke, who are deep on the âwe hate lucas trainâ feel the same way, except theyâre actually friends with haley. so, the three of you put your grievances aside for one day, for nathan and haleyâs sake, and attend their wedding reception planned by lucas.Â
what follows, however, is more and more time spent with lucas. nathan and haley are already married, reception and all, but tim, nathanâs third best friend (after paige and now lucas) is begging to throw him a bachelor party. brooke, who loves any excuse to party, takes it upon herself to throw a bachelorette party for haley. you get roped into the bachelorette party, while paige is dragged to the bachelor party.Â
âtim got a stripper,â nathan confesses to haley, who looks appalled.Â
âwhat?â you ask, stepping into the coupleâs argument.Â
nathan raises his hands up in surrender, âitâs more for tim than anyone else.â
âyeah it better be. my girlfriend is gonna be there,â you point out, with crossed arms.Â
haley rests a hand on your arm, âpaige would never cheat on you.â
you sigh, nodding in agreement before adding, âand nathan would never cheat on you.âÂ
thatâs the start of your budding friendship with haley, one that quickly escalates as brookeâs bachelorette party starts to take shape. it starts with a limo and some champagne, the acquisition of which still remains a mystery, but quickly turns into a classic brooke davis event. the limo arrives at a cute boutique, one you know from your time as brookeâs best friend a little too well. you groan at the sight, but try to keep your dismay on the downlow to not ruin haleyâs night.Â
âokay so youâre married, obviously, which means you need cute lingerie,â brooke announces, scanning the racks while the other cheerleaders present spread throughout the store.   Â
haleyâs cheeks are flaming as she stutters out an excuse, but brooke shuts it down immediately.Â
âjust go sit,â brooke pushes, âand weâll model,â she finishes grabbing your wrist to drag you into the chaos.Â
somehow, you end up in a skimpy lilac matching set that youâre meant to model in front of the entire cheer squad and haley. you hesitate in the changing room, scrutinizing yourself in the mirror. you look great, you know you do because you feel confident in the piece, but you canât bring yourself to go out there.Â
âalright! letâs see it,â brooke calls, opening the curtain to your dressing room.
you freeze, hands covering your chest as if that will help, but brooke just gives you a knowing smile. Â
âdamn,â she starts, âmy best friend is hot!â
your cheeks burn, and you give her a look through the mirror.
âwhat?â she shrugs, âitâs true!â
you look at her over your shoulder, hesitating for just a second before asking, âshould i get it?â
brooke gives you a deadpan stare, âare you kidding? absolutely!â
you open your mouth to reply, but peyton and haley take that moment to walk over.Â
âwow you look great!â peyton compliments, leaning against the wall.Â
haley, a little flustered, nods her head in agreement.Â
âand itâs lilac, paigeâs favorite,â peyton teases, and your cheeks heat up even more.Â
haleyâs eyes widen, and then a devious smile takes over her face, âoh you are so getting that!â
âhaley!â you seethe, while brooke and peyton laugh.Â
âwhat? if iâm walking out with a set for nathan, youâre leaving with a set for paige.â
you groan, reaching for the curtain to take the item off.Â
âso youâre getting it?â brooke teases.Â
you throw your head back, hoping that your lack of verbal response is enough.Â
later that night you and paige reconnect. sheâs laying on her side in your bed, blue eyes watching you as she recounts her crazy night: timâs failed stripper, the rivercourt boys and their keg, timâs arrest, and the scott brothers' reconciliation. you laugh at some parts, and smack her shoulder when she jokes about the two attractive female cops.Â
âso how was the bachelorette party?â she asks, when youâve finally calmed down.
you cover your face with your hands, mumbling about not wanting to talk about it.Â
she laughs, âokay but whatâd you buy?âÂ
your cheeks flame for what feels like the millionth time that night, and you shake your head: ânothing.âÂ
paige sits up on the bed, walking over to the bag sitting on your desk. you jump up, rushing to grab the item out of her hands before she can see it. the tissue paper crinkles as she holds the bag above your head, a cocky smile on her face as she throws a jab at your height. you keep trying, however, to steal the bag back, which only fuels her curiosity. finally, she pulls the tissue paper out, coming face to face with the lilac lingerie. your face is scalding hot, and you use her shock to your advantage, grabbing the bag from her hands. itâs quiet between the two of you, but paige breaks the silence:
âthatâs my favorite color,â she whispers.
you gulp before muttering, âi know.â
the silence returns, but only for a moment.Â
âfuck,â she whispers quietly, âi bet you look so hot in that.â Â
âwant me to show you?â you offer shyly.
now itâs paigeâs turn to gulp, and she nods eagerly. âfuck yeah. baby please.âÂ
you put the piece on, and despite the anxiety in your chest as you step out of your closet, paigeâs reaction makes it all worth it. she lets out a low breath, her hands fisting her sweatpants to keep herself grounded. you step in between her open legs, and she easily takes a hold of your waist, pulling you close.Â
âfuck babe, you look so hot,â she groans, eyes raking over your body.
âdo you like it?â you ask softly, trying to see if sheâs being honest, or just saying what you want to hear.  Â
paige throws her head back, âi fucking love it. you look so sexy in purple.âÂ
you smile softly, wrapping your arms around her shoulders as she pulls you down onto her lap. paige watches you for a moment, before her lips brush against yours. you reciprocate the kiss eagerly. her hands stay planted on your hips, holding you in place, while your fingers curl into her loose curls. the kiss quickly turns heated, and before you know it, paige has you laying on your back while she hovers above.Â
âwanna fuck you so bad,â she whispers, lips trailing over your exposed skin.Â
you gasp at her words, arching into her as your fingers dig into her shoulders. âpaige please,â you whine. Â
âyeah baby? you want it?â she asks, voice low and cocky as she sucks on your neck.Â
âplease,â you breathe, finally meeting her blue eyes.Â
paige nods, her nose nudging yours softly, before getting to work.Â
when youâre both spent, laying next to each other on the bed, paige turns to look at you. your chest is rising and falling rapidly as you try and catch your breath, but you meet her gaze with a soft smile. a cocky smirk takes over her face as she brushes her fingers across your collarbone. she thumbs at the marks left behind by her lips, and whispers:
âremind me to thank brooke the next time i see her.âÂ
you shove her shoulder and scoff in return. Â
the next time you and paige run into brooke, she is not in the mood for compliments. itâs right before first period on a monday, and the head cheerleader is going off about her new nextdoor neighbor, who manages to be both hot and annoying.Â
âand he thinks heâs so charming, but heâs not. i know heâs not,â brooke complains.Â
you nod your head in support, while paige just stands there, her arm casually wrapped around your shoulders.
âtalking about me already brooke? we only slept together last night,â a guy says, with a cocky smirk on his face as he slides into the open space next to said girl.Â
brookeâs face is so red, and her glare could basically put him in a grave, but the guy is more focused on you than anything else. he takes a moment to look you up and down, eyes focusing on your low-rise jeans and the small portion of your exposed midriff. your face scrunches up in disgust, and paige loudly clears her throat, getting the guyâs attention. he finally seems to notice the blonde, and looks eagerly between the two of you.Â
âiâm felix,â he introduces, trying to be smooth.Â
you give him a fake smile, while paige snaps, âand weâre not interested,â before kissing your cheek. Â
âlesbians,â he says, âwell, thereâs a first time for everything.âÂ
you open your mouth to respond, but paige beats you to it: âbrooke, maybe next time you want to hook up, pick someone who isnât interested in other people.â
despite felix leaving a bad taste in your mouth, brooke continues to associate with him. she pretends itâs because heâs her neighbor, but you and paige know the truth: sheâs trying to fill a lucas-sized void. being associated with only brooke isnât enough for felix, however, as he organizes a dare night, managing to rope the entire friend group into it. the premise is simple, the girls (plus felix), will compete against the boys in various dares. each completed dare is worth a point, and the team with the most points at the end of the night wins.Â
while you and paige exchange nervous glances, tim readily agrees. normally, that wouldnât push you to follow, but when peyton and haley also decide to join in on the fun, you feel obligated to say yes. somehow, you and paige manage to stay partners, which definitely eases your nerves about the whole thing. then, your dare doesnât seem all that bad: take pictures with a stranger in a photobooth.Â
âi can do it,â you suggest, looking between paige and the card.Â
paige shakes her head, âthis is stupid. letâs just take the pictures together.âÂ
âbut then our team will lose, cause weâre not following the dare,â you say.Â
paige shrugs. âwho cares about this stupid dare night anyway? besides, if we take the pictures, iâll put them in my gym locker.â
you smile softly at her words, tugging on her hand as a signal for her to lower down to your level. âyouâre such a softie, paigey,â you tease, kissing her cheek, which burns bright red.Â
âshut up and get in the booth,â she grumbles, pushing you towards it.
the photobooth is tight as you and paige try to squeeze inside. the bench is small, and paigeâs tall frame takes up most of the space, so you end up sitting halfway on her lap. paige throws an arm over your shoulder, holding you close as the timer starts to count down for the first photo, which features both of you smiling at the camera. you donât notice that paige is holding up a peace sign, until the next countdown begins. you laugh a little which is captured in the next shot: you giggling while paige stares at you fondly. for the third and final photo, you cup her cheek, placing a quick kiss on her lips as the flash goes off. the two of you stay in that moment for longer than necessary. even when the automated voice informs you that the pictures are printed and your time is up. eventually, the robot gets annoying, and you pull away from the blonde.Â
âi love you,â you whisper, resting your forehead against hers.Â
âi love you more,â she answers, squeezing your thigh as you slide out of the crammed space.Â
since the two of you elected to not complete the dare, you feel like itâs best if you just head to karenâs cafe, where everyone will be meeting to tally up the points. when you get there, you show haley and peyton the photo strip, who gush over it, before you explain that neither of you actually followed the dare. felix, who canât seem to let you or paige get away with anything, decides to give you a new dare right there in the cafe.Â
âi dare you guys to make out,â he starts, âright now.â
your face scrunches up in disgust, and paige scoffs at his words. âwhat are you, a voyeur?â she asks.Â
felix chuckles, throwing his hands up in fake surrender, âim just saying. you two didnât exactly follow the rules.âÂ
âand iâm just warning you to watch yourself,â paige snaps, jaw clenched tight as you intertwine your fingers to try and calm her down.Â
âwhatâs wrong bueckers, scared everyone will see youâre not a good kisser?â he taunts.Â
âthatâs enough, felix,â you snap, eyebrows furrowed as you glare at him.Â
âjust a thought. if you ever want a good time, you know where to find me,â felix says with a wink.Â
nathan and lucas both scoff, looking like they want to intervene, but it proves unnecessary as paige kisses you. her lips press to yours with a fervor you've only experienced after a lost game, or when sheâs angry. your mouth parts, and her tongue easily slides in as she takes control of the kiss, hands holding your waist to pull you closer. you melt into her hold, your free hand tangling in the base of her ponytail. when she breaks away, giving you a chance to catch your breath, paige fixes her gaze on felix.
âthatâs the last time youâre gonna talk to my girlfriend,â paige warns, before leading you out of the cafe.
the days following dare night are tense. paige is angry with herself for falling for felixâs tricks and tactics. she stooped to his level, which is painfully hard for her to admit. at the same time, sheâs also angry with brooke, who has been spending more and more time with felix, despite the proof that heâs obviously not a good guy. paigeâs anger, however, becomes justified when she finds you staring at your locker in horror on monday morning.Â
there are tears in your eyes as you look at the word spray painted across the metal. youâre clutching your backpack strap, and while you try to pretend it doesnât bother you, your mind wanders to a time at a cheerleading competition when someone had something to say about your sexuality. you havenât felt this small in years, and you canât help the overwhelming hurt and embarrassment as everyone watches.Â
paige, seeing your lip tremble, marches over. she shields your view of the locker, pulling you into her chest as she scans the hallways for the culprit. her jaw clenches, and her eyes narrow when she notices felix looking a little too smug. at this point, the whole friend group is there to assess the damage, so paige hands you off to brooke, who is already talking about washing it off and making the culpritâs life hell.Â
before she can stop herself, paige walks over to felix, shoving him against his locker with her elbow at his throat. there are some gasps, and paige is pretty sure nathan is trying to pull her off the other boy, but she doesnât let up.Â
âyou think this shit is funny?â she seethes, voice low.Â
felix doesnât answer, and paige tightens her hold on him. âi asked you a question,â she continues.
âno,â he chokes out.Â
âwhat is going on here?â principal turner asks, finally arriving on the scene.Â
âyouâre lucky,â paige mutters, letting nathan pull her back. âyou stay the fuck away from my girlfriend,â she adds, before going back to your side to comfort you.Â
after school, you and paige are sitting in her car. sheâs white knuckling the wheel, even though the car is still in park. her jaw, which youâre sure hasnât unclenched since the whole incident, is tight as her blue eyes stare ahead. all day youâve been dealing with it; the stares and the whispers. most people were sympathetic, or a little angry, but not everyone. really, all you want to do is curl up in a ball and cry, but you know that will destroy paige. Â
âtalk to me,â paige whispers, after taking a deep breath.Â
her right hand leaves the staring wheel, and settles on your thigh as you meet her gaze. your shoulders shrug, and paige clicks her tongue. âiâll kill him,â she mutters.Â
âpaige,â you start, taking her hand between both of yours.Â
âyou know i will. nathan and lucas too,â she continues. âmaybe we can finally use that scott name for good, huh?â she teases, eliciting a small giggle from you.
âwe donât even know if felix did it,â you reply, meeting her gaze, which has finally softened.Â
paige scoffs now, âi know he did it. heâs a dick.â
your bottom lip wobbles as youâre overcome with emotion. paige, whoâs so willing to fight for you and protect you, makes you feel safe. the tears are falling before you even realize whatâs happening, but sheâs right there, cupping your cheeks and brushing them away. you let out a strained laugh, sniffling as paige rests her forehead against yours.Â
âi feel stupid for crying,â you confess.Â
âbabe,â she starts, but you keep talking.Â
âiâm not ashamed of who i am. i donât think i ever was, and especially now that i have you, how could i be? but seeing that spray painted on my lockerâŚi hurt.â
paige swallows, her own eyes welling up with tears as she looks at you, âi am so sorry.â
âitâs not your fault,â you reply, and thereâs sincerity in your words.Â
âi hate that i couldnât protect you. i hate that youâre crying. i hate that youâre hurt,â she explains, placing gentle kisses along your face as she talks.Â
âand i hate that principal turner is a moron,â she finishes, and you laugh again.Â
thereâs a moment of silence in the car, where you and paige just look at each other. it doesnât feel forced or heavy like you expect it too. instead, the quiet feel grounding. you have paige by your side, and thatâs all you can really ask for at a time like this. she cares about you, so much, and despite everything with the vandalism, sheâs not running away. sheâs not worried about her image or what this could do for her basketball future; sheâs worried about you.Â
âi love you,â you whisper, breaking the silence.Â
paige leans in and kisses you, soft and slow. when she finally drags her lips away, she replies, âi love you too.â Â
after all the felix drama, you decide that a day out with your friends is exactly what you need; something to remind you that people aside from paige love you too. so, when peyton mentions going to the tree hill cd store, you readily agree. peyton, a known music lover, is looking to add to her collection while also searching for a musical act for her all-ages night at a club. the act falls into her hands on the form of chris keller, the cocky and very annoying cashier at the cd store. turns out heâs also an indie artist, who is more than willing to offer his services to peyton. his cocky attitude, however, causes peyton to storm out of the store, leaving you behind holding onto a cd for paige.Â
âwhatâs up with her?â he asks, disbelief in his voice.Â
you give him a deadpanned stare, but place the cd on the counter.Â
he looks it over, before a cocky smile takes shape on his face. âthe killers. you listened to this album yet?â he asks, leaning over the counter to meet your gaze.Â
âno,â you mumble, fumbling around in your bag for some money, âonly a couple songs on the radio.âÂ
chris smiles, âitâs a good album.âÂ
you smile back, holding out the cash for him to ring you out, âiâm sure. my girlfriend likes them.âÂ
his smile drops for just a second, but then it comes right back as he gives you a once over, âshe has good taste.â
you laugh at his blatant flirting, shaking your head. âi know,â you respond.Â
now he laughs, before handing you the money back. âitâs on me. a little gift for your girlfriend,â he says, sliding the cd your way.Â
âwhat? i can pay,â you argue, but he refuses to take your money.Â
âjust tell her chris keller sent it,â he says, throwing in a wink as you laugh one more time before exiting the store.Â
during your conversation, paige finds herself outside the store. she was going on a run, when she spotted you inside. except, when she went to open the door, paige was met with the view of you laughing with the employee. heâs looking you up and down, blatantly flirting, but you donât seem to care. paige, who knows youâre loyal to her, finds herself filled with jealousy. while itâs irrational, the anger at this man for flirting with you refuses to simmer down. it carries over into the immediate run in with you, when you step outside. her blue eyes are fixed on chris keller, contrasting youâre excited smile.
âwhatâs wrong?â you ask, taking her hand in yours.
âwho was that?â she asks, finally meeting your eyes.
âchris keller? i donât know, he works at the music store,â you explain, shouldering your purse.
âchris keller? since when do employees give out their names to customers?â she responds.
âi donât know paige, but he gave me the killers cd for free, which i got for you by the way,â you explain, holding up the cd with a small smile like it will fix all your problems.Â
she scoffs, âunbelievable.âÂ
your smile drops, âwhatâs your problem?â you snap.
âhe was flirting with you!â she shouts.Â
âso what? i told him i have a girlfriend, and iâm not interested anyways,â you answer.
âyou always do that,â she seethes.Â
âdo what?â you ask, genuinely confused.Â
âlet people flirt with you like weâre not together,â she shouts, face reddening as she gets angrier.
you cross your arms, an annoyed and slightly hurt look taking over your face. âpaige, people can flirt all they want, but it doesnât matter because i only want you,â you explain.Â
âit should matter to you. just like this relationship should matter to you!â paige shouts.Â
you know sheâs angry, but those words hit harder than you expected. you blink, furiously trying to will the tears away. you know she doesnât mean it -- she knows you care about this relationship -- but that doesnât make the accusation hurt any less. you shove the cd her way, and she takes it, before you step away from her.Â
âthis relationship does matter to me, a lot,â you say, voice wavering.Â
hearing your voice crack seems to bring her out of this angry trance. paige reaches for you, but you put a hand up, stopping her.Â
âiâll see you when you can realize that too,â you say, before walking away.Â
a couple nights later, haley is hosting a sleepover at her apartment. she invited both you and paige, but neither of you show. while paige is friendly with the girls, she was only going for your sake. now that the two of you are fighting, however, she doesnât even bother; theyâre your friends, not hers. plus, paige knows she screwed up. itâs obvious that you care about the relationship -- youâve never given her a reason to doubt you -- but she let her jealousy get the best of her that day with chris keller. sheâs never even spoken to the guy, and he already pushes all of her buttons. itâs annoying. she knows she needs to make it right, so she goes to your house (because paige knows you, and if sheâs overthinking, then you definitely are too).Â
âhey,â she greets, standing in your bedroom doorway.Â
youâre lying on your bed, in nothing but an oversized shirt and sleep shorts. itâs obvious that you werenât expecting to see her tonight. paige understands. she waits patiently, hands in her pockets, for you to acknowledge her.Â
âyou didnât go to the sleepover?â you ask, climbing off your bed to stand up.Â
she snorts, shaking her head before answering, âi should be asking you that. theyâre your friends, not mine.â
you roll your eyes, claiming, âbrooke likes you. and haley.â
âyeah but they like you more,â she responds before clearing her throat and adding, âplus i donât really like myself right now.âÂ
you sigh, crossing your arms, but you donât say anything in return.
âiâm sorry for what i said the other day, outside the cd store. i shouldnât have said any of that. i know this doesnât make up for what i said, but i needed you to know,â she explains.Â
you sigh again, taking a tentative step closer to her, âiâm sorry too. i knew he was flirting with me, but i just didnât care because i am so hopelessly in love with you paige, why would it matter if some loser from the cd store thinks iâm attractive?â
âit doesnât,â paige replies, âbecause youâre mine and iâm yours. i just got so wrapped up in my jealousy that i forgot that for a second.âÂ
now youâre standing right in front of her, a small smile on your face as you poke her abdomen. paige looks at you shyly. her hands are still in her pockets, and you can tell she doesnât know what to say or do after being so vulnerable with you. so, you take the lead.Â
âi forgive you, by the way,â you whisper.Â
she smiles, looking around your room to avoid eye contact, âme too.â then she confesses, âi hate when we fight.âÂ
you let out a small laugh, nodding your head in agreement. âwant to stay?â you ask, pointing towards your unmade bed.Â
âi thought youâd never ask,â she answers, taking your hand as you lead her towards the furniture.Â
the next few weeks go smoothly for you and paige, despite the tension within your friend group. you and paige attend formal as a couple, which doesnât surprise anyone, even when you show up in matching black dresses. what most people do find surprising, is that haley arrives late, leaving nathan alone for most of the night. the tension in their relationship only worsens as haley prioritizes her passion for music over nathan, all while keeping her emails with chris keller a secret. nathan truly begins to spiral, however, when haley decides to leave tree hill to go on tour with chris keller.Â
âif i ever see keller, heâs dead,â nathan says, storming into paigeâs room unannounced.
paigeâs eyebrows furrow as she looks at you for an explanation, but you just shrug. âwhy?â she asks.
âheâs flirting with haley!â nathan shouts, throwing his hands up as he starts to pace the length of the room.
âthrough email! and now theyâre going on tour together! can you believe this shit?â he continues ranting.Â
âi mean yes,â paige mumbles, and you hit her shoulder. âwhat? he tried to flirt with you at the cd store!â she argues.Â
âi hate this guy!â nathan finishes, sitting on paigeâs bed.Â
âyeah us too,â you agree.Â
there is some good news though, brooke ends up winning student council president. youâre excited for her because sheâs a great leader, and you know sheâll do well in the role. at the same time, peyton and jake jagelski, who left tree hill after his crazy ex was going after his daughter, are getting into a relationship too.Â
âheâs cute,â you whisper to peyton one afternoon in class.
her eyebrows furrow, âarenât you gay?â
âyes,â you reply, âbut game recognizes game.âÂ
that gets her to laugh.Â
while all this is happening, the school decides to make a time capsule, which wonât be opened until fifty years from now. the idea is that the students at tree hill high will all confess something, good or bad, for the future generations to see. itâs nerve-wracking, and youâre not really sure what youâre going to talk about, but when you sit in front of the camera, you easily pour your heart out.
âmy biggest fear is that everyone will leave me behind,â you confess.Â
âeveryone has something their good at. paige, nathan, and lucas all have basketball, and i know theyâll go pro one day. haley has her music, so sheâll probably be a famous popstar. i mean she basically already is one. peytonâŚi could see her running a record label or a chain of clubs across the us. brooke will be a fashion designer, and mouth will probably be running espn before weâre out of college,â you confess, in a happy but also sad tone.Â
âthen thereâs me,â you whisper, âand iâm not good at anything but being paigeâs girlfriend.â
when you step out of the dark room, with a smile plastered on your face, nobody suspects a thing. paige pulls you under her arm, kissing your cheek before entering. she takes a seat on the wooden stool, her shoulders falling as she takes a deep breath and makes eye contact with the camera.Â
âin fifty years,â paige starts, âiâll be married to (y/n). honestly, iâd probably marry her now, but i know thatâs not what we need. iâm sure iâll have a good college career, maybe even a better pro one, but none of it will matter if sheâs not by my side. i love her so much, and sheâs so brilliant that i want her to shine too. i canât predict the future, everytime i imagine it sheâs there with me, with all my championship trophies too.âÂ
after the time capsule, things become semi-normal again. haley is still on tour, but everyone is adjusting to her absence. well, everyone except nathan. he starts acting out, in ways that nobody expects. when his uncle cooper, a race car driver, allows him to drive on the track, nathan gets into a huge accident. it leaves everybody reeling, especially paige and lucas, but the most surprising part is that haley doesnât even reach out.Â
âshe didnât even text him,â you whisper, sitting in the waiting room chairs.
paigeâs jaw clenches, and she stares at the white wall ahead of her.Â
âi donât know whatâs going on with her. this isnât like haley,â you finish as the nurse calls you two in.Â
âwhatâs going on is haley james got a taste of fame,â paige grumbles.Â
she immediately drops the attitude, however, to talk to nathan, or rather yell at him.Â
âthe fuck were you thinking? crashing into the wall!âÂ
âit was an accident, paige,â nathan replies, and he seems genuine.Â
âdonât give me that! itâs because of her, isnât it?â paige continues, and you rest a hand on her forearm to calm her down.Â
âlook paige, i donât expect you to understand, cause your relationship is perfect,â nathan snaps.Â
âyou could have died nathan!â she cries with clenched fists and tears in her eyes.
âyou could have died in that car,â she whispers, voice shaky.Â
you step back to leave, but paige clutches your hand in hers, forcing you to stay.Â
nathan swallows, âiâm sorry.âÂ
âyouâre my best friend, and i didnât even know you were hurting until the accident,â she cries.
nathan is quiet, but he reaches for paigeâs other hand, giving it a squeeze.Â
âiâm sorry,â he repeats.Â
paige nods, âget some rest. weâll talk when youâre out. for now, iâm glad youâre okay.â
the one thing youâre taking from junior year: things in tree hill are changing fast, even within your friend group. this feeling is only amplified when brooke explains her summer plans to you.Â
âiâm leaving,â brooke confesses one day while hanging around your house.
âokay. iâll see you tomorrow,â you reply, getting up to walk her out.
âno,â she replies, âiâm leaving tree hill. i just need a break from everything,â she explains.
âwhat?â you ask.
âi canât stay here. not with all the lucas drama, and without my parents itâs too hard,â she answers softly.
âso stay here! my parents wonât care,â you argue, trying not to cry.Â
she shakes her head, âi canât. i need to go.â
âbrooke,â you start, but she just pulls you into a tight hug.Â
the two of you stay wrapped up in each otherâs arms for a long time, longer than you ever have, but eventually she pulls away.
âweâll be okay,â she promises, âbesides you have paige, who is totally obsessed with you, as a distraction.â
that elicits a small laugh from you as you wipe your nose before saying, âsheâs my girlfriend, not a distraction.â
âugh same thing,â brooke teases, a playful smile on her face.Â
you sit in silence for a minute, but then she squeezes your hand, âdonât miss me too much, okay?â
âimpossible. youâre brooke penelope davis,â you argue, a small smile on your face to mask your hurt.Â
âokay now iâm gonna cry, and my makeup looks too good for that,â she jokes, but her voice is watery.Â
âi love you brooke. donât forget about me,â you whisper, hugging her one last time. Â

featuring: friends to lovers trope; the plot of one tree hill season one; mentions of coming out and a secret relationship; conversations about a car accident and someone in a coma; slight angst but mainly fluff; lowkey bullying, but not towards paige or reader
summary: junior year at tree hill was supposed to be fun. sure there's hard work, college preparations, and the normal teenage drama, but nobody was prepared for everything else. a lost championship, romantic revelations, and two brothers connecting in ways bigger than the court.
paige bueckers is as well known as nathan scott in the basketball community. she plays on the menâs team (since tree hill high doesnât have the funding, or fanbase for a womenâs one) and continues to put up crazy stat lines: 21 points, 11 assists, 5 steals. sheâs also your girlfriend, and extremely down bad for you.
youâre the sweet and popular cheerleader of tree hill high; best friends with brooke davis and secretly dating paige bueckers.
the two of you are friends first, you always have been. growing up in a small town means everybody knows everybody, so it didnât take long for your friend groups to intersect. brooke is friendly with peyton, whoâs dating nathan, who is best friends with paige. that meant your paths were bound to cross at some point, and everyday youâre thankful that they did. paige is kind, loyal, and funny. she smiles in a way that makes your stomach flutter and your heart do jumping jacks. the more your groups intersect, the more you fall for each other.Â
paige tells a joke, and she looks to see if youâre laughing at it. you search for an empty seat, and conveniently take the one next to her instead of brooke. you say hi to paige in the hallways, and she searches for you on the sidelines of her games in your cheer uniform.
you confess your feelings in the worst, yet most you way possible. youâre both a few drinks in at some party, and the words just tumble out.
âi like girls, and iâve never told anybody that but iâm pretty sure it started when i was team bella in twilight. but now? now itâs definitely you.â
âi think for me it was when i first saw you. in like middle school, with some justice outfit. i donât remember, but i remember thinking that i wanted you.â
âwhat if we just like kissed? then weâd have each other?â
then paige kisses you. it starts soft and slow, with a tiny bit of uncertainty. thereâs no tongue, no teeth, just your lips pressed to hers while you both stay planted on the curb outside nathanâs house. then, it shifts. you turn to face her, she pulls your body closer. you hands grip her shoulders, fisting her tree hill warm up jacket, and hers hold the back of your neck. then the kiss becomes more intense. you want her, and she wants you. when you split apart, eyes dazed, she pulls her keys from her pocket, and holds them up like a trophy.
âwant to go to my car?â
you agree, easily. and while you would never believe it, this is the easiest it gets.Â
the basketball season is in full swing, but of course, whitey always has something up his sleeve. so, when lucas scott, nathanâs half brother, is offered a spot on the team, nathan is ballistic. paige, ever the loyal one, feels the need to stand by her best friendâs side, no matter what. at least thatâs what she tells you in the front seat of her car.
âi mean we donât even know if heâs good, babe. and they have this whole rift going, which will definitely screw up the teamâs mojo.â
âmaybe heâs good. i mean, he must play some type of ball if whitey even offered him a spot.â
paige looks at you with raised eyebrows and an expression that can only be described as âare you seriousâ.Â
âcâmon. maybe heâs nice,â you try again.
âit doesnât matter if heâs nice, nathan is my best friend.â
somehow, you all end up at the rivercourt, watching lucas and nathan play for their spot on the team. you arrive with paige, nathan, and peyton. everybody is dressed casually; paige in gray sweats and a tee shirt, while youâre wearing jeans and a baby tee. you stand shoulder to shoulder with her, watching as lucas sinks basket after basket. lucas pulls up for the final jumper, the one he needs to take the lead and the win. everyone watches with baited breath; your arms crossed and paigeâs jaw clenched. swish. nothing but net.Â
âheâs good,â you observe.
paigeâs jaw remains clenched, âtoo good.âÂ
despite putting on a great show at the rivercourt, lucas doesnât follow through in his debut game. he misses too many shots, causes too many turnovers, and does not live up to the hype that paige and nathan have set for the team. you almost feel bad for the guy, who is clearly trying his best, but now has to live up to the hype of his half-brother, and scrutiny of brooke davis.
âiâm sleeping with him. no questions asked.â
âbrooke,â you laugh, rolling your eyes.Â
âheâs handsome. câmon you have to agree?â she says, nudging your shoulder.Â
you shake your head, a small smile on your face as you watch paige make a three point shot, despite being completely contested. âwhatever you say, brooke.â
paige is always your ride home from practice. since the basketball team plays on one side of the gym while the cheer squad perfects their routines on the other. between drills, paige catches herself watching you doing back handsprings and cartwheels. she has to bite her lip to stop herself from smiling. sometimes, you watch her, focused on her toned arms and the authority in her voice as she calls out plays. miraculously, no one ever catches you making eyes across the gym. nobody except lucas scott, who is way too observant.
one day, while leaving practice, he catches paige waiting by the locker room doors for you. he watches as she grabs your cheer bag in one hand, and holds your left hand. he sees how you smile at her, whispering about the shots she made at practice, and how she smiles wider when you lean into her side. then, paige opens the passenger door to her car, and you climb in. instead of closing the door right away, she leans down, and presses her lips to yours. you giggle, say something about how youâre sweaty from practice, and she responds with a quip about how she likes you that way. finally, she shuts the door, looks over her shoulder, and makes eye contact with lucas. paigeâs eyebrows furrow, like sheâs testing him, but he just holds his hands up in surrender. he brings it up at practice the next day:
âsheâs your girlfriend,â he says in line for a drill.
âi donât know what you think you saw, scott, but itâs none of your business,â paige grumbles, catching the ball before taking her shot.
she gets back in line, and lucas follows her after his turn. âiâm not gonna tell anyone if thatâs what youâre worried about. itâs not my place.âÂ
âyeah, itâs not,â she snaps.
when nathan wants to haze lucas, paige almost feels bad. almost. yes, he hasnât told anyone about her relationship with you, but that doesnât mean she trusts him. and when everyone turns around to leave him behind, soaked in mud, she hesitates for just a split second.
âletâs go!â nathan calls.
she hesitates, watching the blonde boy standing in front of her.Â
âpaige!â he calls again, and she finally turns around.Â
a couple weeks later, nathan is hosting a party after one of their games. somehow, paige convinces him to invite lucas, claiming that itâs the right thing to do since heâs part of the team. at the same time, youâre stuck convincing paige to go, even though she would probably be in attendance anyways.Â
âsoâŚnathan is having a party tonight,â you say, walking up to paigeâs locker in the middle of the school day.
âyes he is,â she mumbles, closing her locker as you lean against the one next to hers.Â
âwell, are you going? brooke and i are catching a ride with peyton,â you ask, an excited gleam in your eyes.Â
âbabe, iâm on the team,â she starts, before leaning in to whisper in your ear, âbesides, everyone will be so drunk, iâll have you all to myself.âÂ
that night, you find paige in the kitchen. sheâs filling up a drink, and when she spots you, she extends the solo cup in your direction. you smile, taking the drink from her outstretched hand, fingers grazing hers as you shoot her a coy smile. she rolls her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips as she fills up her drink with the keg. the two of you keep sneaking glances across the room all night, until brooke drags you into a game of âi neverâ. itâs stupid, and you know itâs just an excuse for everyone to poke fun at each other, but you still find yourself standing in a circle with paige, nathan, peyton, lucas, and tim. brooke starts, but then nathan makes a dig towards lucas, and his relationship, or lack there of, with their dad. lucas clenches his jaw, and your mouth drops open at the cruelty behind nathanâs words. you look at paige, begging her to say something.Â
âthatâs enough nathan,â she grumbles.
nathanâs eyes widen, and he looks just the slightest bit betrayed.Â
âthat was mean,â you whisper before walking away, paige following you to the back deck.Â
âyou didnât have to follow me,â you whisper, finishing the rest of your drink.
ânah, nathan was pissing me off,â she says, taking a spot next to you.Â
you turn to face her, âyou stood up for lucas. why?â
she hesitates, her tongue poking the inside of her cheek, âhe saw us, in the parking lot, but hasnât said anything. he couldâve, but he didnât, so i owe him one.âÂ
you open your mouth to say something; defend the fact that keeping your relationship a secret is the right choice, but she stops you.Â
âbesides, heâs actually a good player.â
âi just need more time,â you say softly.Â
âi know,â she answers, âbut that doesnât mean i like hiding you.â
a couple weeks later, you are sitting with peyton and brooke at another party. the three of you are drinking, while peyton and brooke share stories about whatever guy theyâre into. brooke, whoâs hell bent on getting lucas to fall for her, is talking about another attempt to get him into her bedroom. you nod, trying to follow along, but youâre focused on paige, whoâs standing with nathan at the bonfire. sheâs wearing cargoes, and a hoodie with the sleeves pushed up. you watch as she laughs at something he says, shoving his shoulder while some of their teammates laugh.Â
âyou have something to share with the class?â brooke teases, nudging you.
you clear your throat, looking away from your girlfriend, before shaking your head.
âoh come on! youâve totally been making eyes at bueckers all night. you dating her or something?â peyton jokes.Â
you realize that this is your chance, and you take it: âyes, we are,â you whisper.Â
âwaitâŚâ brooke says, her drink hanging limply in her hand, âlike actually?â
you nod, finishing off your drink, âlike actually.âÂ
theyâre silent for a minute, but eventually brooke wraps you in a hug. you blink back the tears you didnât even realize you were holding in, and then peyton joins in too.Â
âi mean sheâs hot, so i get it,â brooke whispers, and you giggle.Â
âobviously not as hot as me, but hot nonetheless,â she finishes.Â
âbrooke,â you whine, shoving her away in a playful manner.Â
âoh sheâs looking over her. i think youâre being summoned,â peyton teases, pointing over at paige, who is now looking at you.Â
you meet her gaze, a soft smile on your face, before excusing yourself from the group. when you walk over there, paige has a soft expression on her face, but sheâs masking it by raising her eyebrows. you step into her space, and paige casually wraps her arm around your waist.Â
âthatâs my cue to leave,â nathan mumbles, leaving the two of you alone by the fire.
âyou okay?â she asks softly, her fingers running up and down your side.Â
âi told them. brooke and peyton,â you confess, a small smile overtaking your face.Â
her eyes widen, âyou did?â
âi did,â you confirm.Â
paige stares at you for a minute, disbelief but also awe on her face.Â
âcan i kiss you?â she asks, cupping your face as her drink drops onto the sand.Â
âif you didnât, i was going too,â you mumble, pulling her face to yours as your lips meet.Â
despite coming out to brooke and peyton, the two of you decide that itâs best to hold off on revealing your relationship to the whole school. the people closest to you know: brooke, peyton, nathan, and your families. plus lucas, who accidentally caught you and paige flirting in the school parking lot weeks ago. surprisingly, things outside of your relationship are going well. paige, nathan, and lucas are starting to gel on the court, creating a scoring powerhouse for the ravens. youâre thriving on the cheer team, finding a new love and passion for the sport, but maybe that has to do with who youâre cheering for. then, tragedy strikes.Â
âlucas got into a car accident!â paige shouts, and you can hear the sound of her car door slamming in the background of the call.
âwhat?â you screech, putting your book down as you scramble off the bed.Â
âhe got into an accident while driving to pick up his mom. nathan just called to tell me. weâre going to the hospital now,â she explains, you can hear the rattling of her truck down the street.
âcome get me,â you say, wedging your phone between your shoulder and ear as you slip into your shoes.Â
âbabe i donât knowâŚâ she trails off.
âpaige,â you start, âheâs your friend. i know youâre upset. let me be there for you,â you finish.Â
paige takes a deep breath, âokay.â Â
you and paige end up in lucasâs hospital room, surrounded by his mother and brooke davis. you share a glance with paige at the sight of brooke, who looks extremely disheveled while holding back tears. both of you ignore it for now, instead focusing on your friend, who is laying in a coma. paige holds you close, burying her face in your shoulder as she struggles to keep her own tears at bay. you squeeze her tightly, whispering consoling words.
a few days later, lucas is released from the hospital. paige is dragging her feet about visiting him.
âi just feel like we arenât close,â she explains, throwing a small basketball in the air as she lays on your bed.Â
âpaige,â you say, putting your pencil down, âheâs your teammate, and friend. itâs not weird.âÂ
âi wouldnât say weâre friends,â she grumbles, which she only does when she knows youâre right.
neither of you end up at lucasâs, however, as brooke appears in your doorway. her cheeks are tearstreaked with mascara. you jump up from your desk, pulling brooke into your arms. she starts crying even harder, and you rub her back in an attempt to console her. paige is sitting up on your bed now, looking like she wants to leave. just as she gets up, brooke confesses everything: how lucas broke up with her for peyton, your other best friend. your mouth drops open, and paigeâs jaw clenches as she listens to brooke sob over this boy, who really doesnât deserve an ounce of her attention. when brooke finally calms down, falling asleep on your bed, paige turns to you and whispers:
âthis is why i wonât call lucas my friend.âÂ
paige keeps that mentality for a surprisingly long time. all the way until the away game in charlotte, which also coincides with the major cheer competition. youâre already jittery with nerves, rambling about back handsprings and perfecting your routine constantly. the entire time paige nods her head, pretending like she understands exactly what youâre saying. (spoiler alert: she doesnât) meanwhile, the tension between nathan and lucas, boils over, especially since the former is officially dating haley.Â
âpaige, you know iâm right,â nathan says, dragging her into the brothers' argument.Â
âno. she knows youâre wrong,â lucas chimes in.Â
the two start to bicker again, but paige stops them: âenough! iâm sick of being in the middle. iâm friends with two idiots, and iâm not taking any sides!â
paige looks like she wants to say more, but you walk into the room looking rattled.Â
âwhat happened?â paige asks, leaving the brothers behind as she walks up to you.Â
âtheresa has the chicken pox! and now weâre totally gonna lose,â you rant.
paige can see the anxiety on your face, so she pulls you into her arms. âthatâs not true babe, youâve been practicing your back tuck," she whispers.Â
âback handspring,â you correct absentmindedly.Â
âwhat?â she says with a small laugh.Â
âiâve been practicing my back handspring, not my back tuck. those are easy,â you mumble, a shy smile on your face as paige throws you a knowing look.Â
âi think youâre gonna be fine,â she teases.Â
while keeping your relationship on the downlow is working, everything comes out at the annual âboy toyâ auction. the entire basketball team, paige included, participates in an auction where the entire town has the opportunity to win a night with one of the boys. of course lucas, nathan, and jake are the most sought after, but you donât expect people to be going after paige. until some girl raises her hand when whitey calls out paigeâs name.Â
âone hundred!â she shouts, holding the cash up in the air.Â
your jaw clenches, and you immediately out bid her: âone-twenty!â
she gives you the side eye, but continues to up the price.Â
âbrooke, give me your money,â you say between clenched teeth.Â
âbut lucas,â she tries, but you cut her off with a stern look.Â
brooke hands you the cash, and you call out, âone-fifty.â
the girl keeps upping the price, and paige keeps looking between the two of you like this is reality tv.Â
âtwo hundred!â you call, and everyoneâs eyes widen.
whitey bangs the gavel, and itâs a done deal. you hand him the money, and then walk up to paige. she opens her mouth, like she wants to tease you, but you donât let her get the words out. instead, you wrap your hands around her neck, and pull her into a heated kiss, right in front of the entire crowd. thereâs a handful of gasps, and someone even wolf whistles. when you pull away, paige has a dazed look in her eyes, but youâre focused on the now embarrassed girl who thought it was a good idea to try and outbid you.Â
after the auction, paige meets you in the gym. she gives you a shy smile, with a knowing look in her eyes. her cheeks are a little red as she notices all the eyes and whispers directed towards you.Â
âare you mad?â you ask softly, biting your bottom lip.Â
paige shakes her head, âit was kind of hot,â she confesses.
now itâs your turn for your cheeks to heat up, and you look down in embarrassment. âtoo much?â you whisper.Â
paige cups your cheeks, pulling you into a kiss in front of everyone again, ânot enough,â she mumbles, as her lips brush yours.
the rest of the basketball season goes by in a blur. paige is a beast on the court, helping to lead her team to the playoffs alongside the scott brothers, who are finally on good terms. at the same time, she has you cheering for her on the sidelines. now that the catâs out of the bag, you always wear her number, 5, on your right cheek, in the exact spot where paige kisses you right before taking the court. while paige pretends like it doesnât affect her, hearing you cheer extra loudly when she scores a basket boosts her confidence. suddenly, it doesnât matter that sheâs the only girl playing in an all boys league, all that matters is you, standing by her side. especially when things get tough; especially when they lose the game. you hug her right after, pulling her close as her lanky arms wrap around your waist.Â
âiâm sorry baby,â you whisper.Â
paige just nods, struggling to hold back her frustration at the night.Â
âat least dan doesnât get the win,â you joke, which draws a chuckle from her.Â
âi just wanted to win for you,â she confesses later that night, when youâre both laying in her bed. Â
you turn on your side to face her, âyou always make me proud, paige.â
she smiles, turning to face you now. âeveryone expects me to be great, but you donât. you accept me for me, and it means the world to me,â she confesses.
âpaige,â you start, but she cuts you off.Â
âi know itâs stupid, but i wanted to win tonight for you, to say thank you, for always supporting me,â she finishes, a small blush on her freckled cheeks.Â
âi love you,â you whisper, kissing the tip of her nose. âbut you never have to win to earn my love of validation. you already have all of it,â you explain. Â

okay guys i think im gonna do it 𫡠i have some editing to do and i want to make a masterlist & header for it, so hopefully it will be out later today!!
the nonchalant quidditch player and her final boss
summary: paige finally sees you after the quidditch incident. despite all the teasing remarks from her friends, she knows thereâs something going on between the two of you, even if her cool girl composure slips. Â
featuring:Â flustered/blushing paige, friends teasing one another, a swear word, and paige being down bad
word count: 1.1k
author's note: people really liked the last gryffindor!paige fic, so i decided to keep the ball rolling!! but seriously thank you guys for all the love on the last one, it means a lot đŤśđť previous part
the bludger incident happened three days ago, and paige has not seen you once. she dropped you off at the hospital wing and promptly excused herself when you knocked out from the pain potions. normally, she wouldnât waste another minute thinking about the situation; she has piles of unfinished school work, an upcoming quidditch match against slytherin, and sore muscles from woodâs intense practices. yet, all she can think about is you, and the look in your eyes when you called her pretty, like you knew exactly what you were doing.  Â
sheâs dying to see you again. while she hopes sheâs being subtle about it, the way she searches for you in the great hall or in charms class gives her away. at least based on the looks from her housemates. azzi, her roommate, best friend and teammate, keeps exchanging glances with hermione, their much more inquisitive roommate. paige knows theyâre on to her, which isnât the end of the world considering they all know little secrets about one another anyways. like how hermione sleeps with a retainer or how azzi uses muggle curl products in her hair. so paige convinces herself that itâs fine if they know she sneaks glances your way at least twice a day.
whatâs not fine is that dean thomas and seamus finnigan are also starting to put the pieces together. unlike azzi and hermione, who are all quiet looks and silent judgement, dean and seamus are obnoxious gestures and boisterous voices. despite being friends with them for years, paige resents their observant nature and blatant disregard for discretion. especially right now, when she actually sees you for the first time since the accident.Â
sheâs laughing with azzi about something, probably a subtle dig at ron who made a fool of himself in potions earlier this morning. itâs lighthearted and relaxed as the gryffindors walk across the courtyard, towards the benches theyâve deemed their own. until seamus lets out a low whistle: âthink fast bueckers, your girlfriendâs walking by.âÂ
paigeâs head snaps, and her blue eyes squint as she tries to find you. âten oâclock,â seamus calls out, looking a little too smug as he points in your direction. paige follows his finger, watching as you walk past the courtyard with a group of friends. she quickly pushes his hand down, but doesnât divert her gaze from you, laughing with your friends. her eyebrows furrow as she scrutinizes your face, looking for any remaining signs of damage, however, youâre too far away for her to truly tell.Â
seamus smirks, looking eagerly between you and paige, as if heâs watching a soap opera. his shoulders slump and the excitement fades, however, when he realizes paige is not going to say anything as you round the corner and disappear from sight.Â
âthought you had her in the palm of your hand, bueckers, what happened?â seamus teases and paigeâs cheeks flush a light pink.Â
her tongue pokes the inside of her cheek as her jaw clenches. âshut up finnigan,â she says, nostrils flared.
the teasing continues, but his words go in one ear and out the other as paige focuses on keeping her composure. she has a crush on you, itâs now blatantly obvious to anyone who looks her way, but she wants to at least give off the illusion of nonchalance. sheâs the best quidditch player on her team, and yet all she can think about is how your eyes crinkle when you smile. she would probably trip over her robes if you smiled at her, or waved shyly in her direction, but she is trying to at least pretend sheâs still a cool gryffindor. especially around seamus finnigan, who talks so much it qualifies as a sport.Â
sheâs so caught up in her head, that she almost misses you approaching. thankfully (unfortunately) seamus has her back, as he elbows her in the ribs. âthe fuckâŚâ she starts, but her voice trails off as she catches sight of you, clutching a book to your chest as you smile in her direction. paigeâs lips part, and she swears youâre glowing when you stop a couple feet in front of her. thereâs not a single bruise or flaw on your skin. in fact, the only reason she knows you were injured is because she watched the bludger make contact with your nose. Â
âhi paige,â you greet, nervously glancing around at her friends, who all decide now is the perfect time to halt all conversation.Â
âhi,â she whispers, voice breathless. she catches herself, cheeks heating up once again, as she fake clears her throat. âi meanâŚhi,â and she says your name in what she hopes is a confident manner. you giggle softly at her, and paige finds herself looking down at her sneakers.
âi just wanted to thank you again for bringing me to the hospital wing. iâm all better now, but who knows where iâd be if you werenât there,â you say, throwing her a small smile thatâs both hesitant and grateful.Â
âprobably bleeding out in the quidditch stands,â paige jokes easily, except her ears turn pink as she realizes how that might have come out wrong. âi meanâŚâ she starts, but your laughter cuts her off again. paige relaxes at the sound, and shoves her hands into the pockets of her trousers. Â
âyouâre funny,â you compliment, giving her a quick once over with your eyes.Â
her ears burn again. âthanks,â she says, meeting your gaze in a quick yet fleeting stare.Â
âwell i have to go, but iâll see you around, paige,â you call, turning on your heel and walking back towards your friends, who are waiting under one of the marble arches leading back into the castle. theyâre all smiling as you walk over, and when you throw one more quick gaze her way, one of them shoves your shoulder in a playful manner. paige watches as you become bashful, and her heart does a flip in her chest. Â
âreal smooth bueckers,â seamus teases, clasping her on the shoulder, âshe definitely wants you now,â he continues.Â
âi mean obviously, look at how her friends reacted,â azzi points out, and dean hums in agreement.Â
âmaybe she likes the whole desperate athlete look,â harry teases, and the boys all break out into a chuckle.Â
âor maybe she just likes paige for paige,â hermione says, coming to the blondeâs defense.Â
âor your muscles. but does it really matter?â azzi teases, and paigeâs lips curl into a small smile at her friendâs words.Â
even though theyâre teasing her, and her reputation of being calm, cool, and collected is down the drain, it doesnât bother her all that much because your friends were doing the same thing. thatâs all the validation she needs.

summary: when cocky and confident quidditch player paige bueckers accidentally hits you in the face with a bludger, she never imagined it would lead to an intense crush on the unexpecting victim.
featuring: fluff, cocky but also flustered/nervous paige, readerâs house is unspecified!!
word count: 1.05k
authorâs note: my new hobby is combining paige beuckers and my favorite fandoms đâď¸ also this is my first paige fic (or fic in months honestly) so iâm sorry if it feels rambly/rushed!! hope you enjoy đŤśđť
paige knew she was screwed the second she saw you sitting in the quidditch stands. technically, quidditch practice is open to anyone, but spectators usually consist of teammateâs friends. you could have fallen into that category; maybe you talked with azzi or sat behind dean thomas in a class. however, that all seemed unlikely.
instead of listening to oliver wood, her quidditch captain, who was explaining whatever new drill he conjured up, paige watched you. that was definitely her first mistakeâwatching you instead of listening to woodâs yapping. you were reading a book, completely unbothered by the noise of the pitch. she tried to make out the title, but the distance prevented her from seeing it clearly. so, she guessed that you were using the quidditch practice as an excuse to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather, rather than support a friend.Â
âyou got that, bueckers?â wood asked, drawing her eyes away from you.Â
âyep. all set,â she replied, an easy smile on her face.Â
the captain nodded as the team split up. paige hovered on the sidelines, in a spot where she could both keep an eye on you and hustle through drills. she watched her team for a second, learning woodâs play, before her thoughts wander back to you. youâre in her year (because she remembers seeing you in charms class) but she canât remember what house youâre in. ravenclaw maybe? since youâre reading for fun and the only other person who does that is hermione granger. yet, you also have that hufflepuff softness. so maybe youâre a hufflepuff? then again, she could be totally off, and you could be in slytherin. regardless, sheâs sure it doesnât matter.Â
âbueckers!â wood calls, drawing her attention back to the team, âyouâre up!âÂ
she nods, flying into position to run the play. sheâs focused, following the movement of the quaffle as dean and azzi toss it between the two of them. from the corner of her eye, she sees one of the weasley twins direct a bludger her way, without thinking she moves to the side. the bludger doesnât change course, however, as itâs heading straight for the stands; straight towards you.Â
âlook out!â she calls, and your eyes meet hers, just in time for your nose to make contact with the bludger.Â
thereâs a loud, resounding crack, and then you slump down in the stands. paige immediately moves towards you, easily sliding off her broom and climbing the wooden bleachers. âare you okay? iâm so sorry!â sheâs shouting, voice panicked.Â
you blink, slow and lethargic. âi think my nose is broken,â you mumble, and thatâs when paige notices the blood gushing down your face.Â
âshit,â she seethes, already taking off her quidditch jersey to press to your nose. her movements are frantic and rough, but once she places the fabric against your skin, a soft gentleness takes over. âiâm gonna take you to the infirmary. pomfrey will fix you right up,â she says, hauling your arm over her shoulders.Â
âbut your practice,â you try to argue, and she clicks her tongue. âiâll be fine. i donât need practice anyway,â she responds, waiting until you take hold of the jersey to grab her broom.Â
âthat sounds offly cocky,â you mumble, voice warbled between the cloth, blood, and pain. she gives a small smirk, blue eyes shining as she replies, âit is.âÂ
miraculously, the two of you make it to the infirmary without any further mishaps. paige bursts through the door, her arm still wrapped around your waist while yours is draped across her shoulder.
âoh heavens!â madam pomfrey exclaims upon seeing you, gesturing for paige to guide you to one of the empty beds.Â
âshe got hit with a stray bludger at quidditch practice. took it right to the nose,â paige explains, setting you down on the cot.Â
âwell thatâs probably broken. any other symptoms?â pomfrey asks, removing the jersey from your face.Â
âiâm fine, really,â you insist, and paige clicks her tongue again.
sheâs standing with crossed arms and furrowed eyebrows as she looks at you. she gives a gentle shake of her head, causing her ponytail to brush along her shoulders. âsheâs delirious,â paige explains, gesturing to you as proof.Â
pomfrey nods her head, mumbling about a possible concussion. âiâm going to give you something for the pain, while miss bueckers puts on a shirt,â she announces before walking away.Â
paige flushes at pomfreyâs words, pulling her quidditch robe tighter against her chest. she meets your gaze, and her cheeks turn an even darker red when she sees that youâre already watching her. âyou were bleeding,â is all she can manage. somehow you muster up a smile. even with your face caked in dried blood she finds it contagious.Â
âokay,â madam pomfrey says, placing some vials along your nightstand. âiâm going to fix your nose, and then youâre going to drink these, theyâll help with the pain. weâll keep you here for a bit, just to monitor everything, and make sure youâre not concussed,â she explains, and paige watches intently as madam pomfrey fixes your nose with a soft spell. you make a pained sound, but the bleeding stops instantly.Â
paige shifts on her feet as you down all the potions pomfrey hands you. after the third one, your eyes are dropping, and madam pomfrey helps you lean back onto the pillow. finally, the mediwitch steps aside and turns to paige, whispering, âsheâll be fine. just going to sleep the pain away.âÂ
paige nods, taking a glance at you. it already looks like youâre asleep. âi should get going then,â she whispers, taking the bloodied jersey off your bed. as she leans down to grab it, your hand wraps around her wrist. her head snaps to you, as you give a gentle tug. her blue eyes meet yours, wide and awestruck, as she becomes acutely aware of her heartbeat speeding up and your fingers pressed to her pulse point.Â
âthanks for saving me,â you mumble, eyes flicking over her freckled face. you take one look at her red cheeks, a soft smile taking over your face. âand youâre really pretty,â you add, eyes half-lidded as your grip on her wrist relaxes and you finally drift to sleep.
if she wasnât blushing before, paige is certainly blushing now.

fake right, and break left
âit canât be that hard,â travis gloats, standing in front of you as you dribble the ball between your legs casually.Â
you shrug. âplay me and find out,â you reply, throwing up a perfect three pointer.Â
âi just mean that you spend all summer being a demigod, your skills have to be a little rusty,â he exclaims, throwing up a hand too late as the ball has already swished through the net.Â
connor, his younger and just as sassy brother, grabs the rebound and bounces it to travis, saying, âthatâs true. youâre here, picking strawberries and flirting with luke.âÂ
your cheeks flush at his comment, and there are several laughs from your friend group. you risk a glance at the head counselor, whoâs sitting with clarisse, silena, chris, and charlie on the sidelines. his shoulders are shaking with laughter, but his cheeks are just tinted a bit red from the teasing. although, there really is no need for it; thereâs nothing more than a flirtationship and occasional make out between you two.Â
âbut i could still beat you,â you say, effortlessly stealing the ball from travis and sinking the layup.Â
âthatâs what, five to zero, not that weâre keeping score,â you add tauntingly.Â
âsettle down nike, you havenât seen nothing yet,â travis says, and your friends ooh at his words.Â
âokay fine. first to twenty one wins. and to make it fair, weâll play loserâs ball,â you say, passing the ball to him as you take a defensive stance.Â
travis scoffs at your words, opening his mouth to protest, but luke cuts him off, âjust take the deal trav, sheâs saving you from further embarrassment.âÂ
you smirk at your friendâs words, pulling your basketball shorts up your thighs as you crouch down and get in travisâs face. he gulps, a nervous sweat breaking out on his forehead, but doesnât say anything as he tries to formulate a plan. you watch his eyes dart around the court, and know exactly what heâs going to do. itâs almost too easy.Â
one. two. you count the dribbles before you swipe the ball from his hands. you take it outside the three-point line, per the rules, and take the shot.Â
grabbing the rebound, you hand it to him, âlike i said, loserâs ball.âÂ
donât be afraid to shoot the outside j
âone of these days the harpies are going to get you,â luke says, making his presence known.Â
you turn away from the basket, smiling softly at him as the ball soars through the air and into the net. heâs in his pajama pants and a black hoodie thatâs a little too small on him.Â
âi canât help it,â you explain, holding the ball between your palms at the free throw line.Â
luke sighs. he canât imagine the pressure to be great. âwhat drill are you running?â he asks, stepping beside you.
you smile. âmake ten free throws, in a row. then iâll hit the elbows, and after that threeâs,â you explain, dribbling the ball three times before shooting.Â
you donât miss. he doesnât expect you to.
âwell how many have you made?â he asks.Â
âtwelve. but you watching always makes me nervous,â you say, trailing off towards the end.Â
his eyebrows furrow at your words. youâve always been vulnerable with him, but that usually takes coaxing. this was an easy admittance; it makes him nervous.Â
âwhy?âÂ
âdonât know. i always want to play good for you, for all of you guys i guess,â you say with a shrug.Â
luke crosses his arms at that, a serious look taking over his face as he observes you. heâs trying to process what youâre saying, read in between the lines. youâre sure of it, the small furrow in his brow giving him away. you go back to your shooting drills, his gaze burning deep into your skin is too much for you.Â
âyou always play good though. and i know that because the apollo and ares boys talk about how teamed up they still canât beat you,â luke says.Â
you flush at his words. youâd hoped he didnât know about your games with them: you versus two boys. it made you feel superior to them, all the campers here, and you felt guilty for it. youâd never been on a quest, and you never would. your mother wasnât one of the twelve olympians, so you didnât even have a cabin to call your own, just a bunk in the middle of the hermes cabin. at the same time, she hadnât given you a special gift or anything noteworthy, just her competitive spirit. something which youâre sure was passed down to you and your siblings, not that you had many.Â
âiâm not supposed to be a star here, luke. the whole reason i came to camp was to get a some sense of normalcy, and i canât even do that right,â you mumble.Â
he grabs the ball from your hands then, forcing you to look at him. ânothing about you is normal. neither your parentage nor basketball skills. and especially not your fancy sports school, but we donât hold it against you. we all have our quirks,â he says, a lopsided smile on his face, one you easily reciprocate.Â
âyeah i guess you're right.â
âi know i am, nike,â he answers, surprising you with a kiss on the corner of your mouth. âletâs head back,â he continues, lacing your fingers with his, giving you no other option but to follow.Â
cause when we get it then the crowd will go wild
âand you got more mail today,â your dad says over the iris message, âsomething from the coach at princeton and one from quinnipiac.âÂ
you nod your head, humming softly to show that you heard what he was saying.Â
âi think you should come home, sport,â he adds, and your eyes widen at his words.Â
the protests are on the tip of your tongue, but he beats you to it, âi know. i know, but this is your future weâre talking about. i mean, some of these coaches are inviting you to a practice and a meeting.âÂ
you understand what heâs saying, really you do. the opportunities coming your way are endless, but how can you give up summer when it just started? this year is your senior year, and once you commit, you know there will be no more summers at camp half-blood. youâll be giving up frolicking in the strawberry fields with katie gardner and sneaking out to bonfires with clarisse and silena. next summer, there wonât be pick up games with travis or training in the late hours of the night while luke grabs the rebounds.Â
âcanât i just have one month?â you beg, finally meeting your dadâs eyes.Â
he hesitates, you can see that heâs leaning towards no, but you interject, âplease dad. itâs my last summer here. we all know it.âÂ
he sighs, mumbling something about sending emails, but replies, âone month. iâm coming to get you right after the fourth, no ifs ands or buts. got it?âÂ
you nod excitedly, smiling as you wipe at your cheeks, which you didnât even notice were damp. âthanks dad,â you whisper.Â
he smiles, nodding his head, âyou got it.âÂ
the two of you sit in silence for a minute, and as you move to disconnect the message he says, âiâm proud of you, sport, always have been.âÂ
you smile again, shyly this time after hearing your dadâs praise. âthanks dad. love you.âÂ
âlove you too,â he answers, before swiping his hand through the mist and ending the call.Â
you take a breath, shoulders dropping with relief. you have one month left of summer before itâs back to the grind, and you know exactly what you need to do; who you need to talk to. turning on your heel to leave the cabin, you collide with somebody. looking up at them, you realize that itâs luke, and the apologies die on your tongue when you notice the far away look in his eyes.Â
âhey. you okay?â you ask, giving his biceps a squeeze.Â
he swallows, meeting your eyes as he asks, âyouâre leaving in a month? i thought we had the whole summer?â
you bite on your bottom lip, regret pooling in your stomach as you answer, âyeah. a lot of colleges want me to play for them, so i need to go talk to some coaches.â
his eyebrows furrowed in confusion, and he steps away from you. you frown, reaching out for him, but he holds up a hand, effectively warding you off. the distance between you two makes you uncomfortable, and you gnaw at your lip as you wait for him to gather his thoughts.Â
âhow many schools?â he asks.Â
âwhat?âÂ
âhow many schools are looking for you?â he says, stepping closer to you again.Â
the question is unexpected, and throws you off balance for a second. âoh. um a lot. thereâs a ton of them,â you say.Â
âlike?â he probes, waving a hand for you to continue.Â
âwell, thereâs usc, but they have juju watkins so i donât think iâm really needed there. uconn, with paige bueckers and azzi fudd, plus theyâre looking into sarah strong so i donât know how much time iâll get there either. kim mulkey from lsu and dawn staley from south carolina have both reached out. princetonâs given me an offer, and so has michigan, but i donât really know about those two. some smaller schools too, like quinnipiac and uri want me to play with them. i think fau and a couple massachusetts schools have reached out too, but everything is still really up in the air,â you ramble, feeling nervous explaining it all to luke.Â
âgeez nike, those are a lot of schools,â he says with a proud smile on his face.Â
you smile back, âdonât i know it.âÂ
itâs quiet between the two of you, and he finally opens his arms. you walk right into him, burying your face in the crook of his neck where it smells like sweat, pine needles, and irish spring soap. youâre a bit more relaxed now, the threat of leaving camp for good pushed back in your mind. then again, being lukeâs arms always relaxes you.Â
âi canât wait to get a uconn jersey,â he whispers, wrapping his arm around your shoulder as he guides you out of the cabin.Â
you raise a brow at that, âwho said iâm going there?â
he gives you a look that reads âseriouslyâ and replies, âthe best of the best go there, nike. and youâre clearly one of best.âÂ
you laugh at his words, throwing a playful elbow at his ribs, but he just pulls you closer, kissing the top of your head. you lean into him, wrapping an arm around his waist as the two of you walk through camp, searching for your friends.    Â
should i go for it? better shake this, yikes!
âi canât believe youâre leaving tomorrow,â silena pouts, looking at you over the rim of her cup.Â
âi know! i feel like summer is just getting started,â you reply, smoothing out your beach towel as you take a seat next to her and clarisse.Â
âmaybe youâll have a weekend off to come back and visit,â clarisse says, and silena nods her head excitedly.Â
you know the odds of that happening are doubtful, but you nod and reply, âyeah maybe.âÂ
the mood turns somber then, and the three of you sit in silence. nobody knows what to say as you wait for the fireworks to start.Â
âyou know what, we canât be sad. itâs your last night, and we need to come up with a plan for you to confess to luke,â silena exclaims, a determined look in her eyes.Â
you freeze mid-sip, and cough up the liquid. âwhat?âÂ
âoh donât play dumb, we all know you have feelings for him,â she continues, waving her hand casually.Â
âi donât. heâs just a friend,â you reply a little too quickly.Â
âyou, you got what i need,â clarisse starts singing teasingly.Â
âbut you say heâs just a friend,â silena continues.Â
âyou say heâs just a friend. oh baby you,â they shout, singing together.Â
you canât help but laugh at their antics, shoving silenaâs shoulder as they quiet down into a fit of giggles. once you all calm down, silena takes charge again, âbut seriously, you need to tell him how you feel.â
you shake your head, but clarisse interrupts, âthis could be your last chance.âÂ
you sigh. sheâs completely right. the chances of you coming back to camp after tomorrow are slim to none. and while you may have convinced yourself you're okay with never knowing how a relationship between you and luke would go, there will always be a small part of you that regrets not saying anything.Â
âeven if he rejects you, youâre leaving tomorrow, so it doesnât really matter,â clarisse adds, and silena slaps her shoulder.Â
âi meanâŚnot that he would,â the daughter of ares stutters, but you wave her off.Â
âyou guys are right. iâm gonna tell him,â you decide, downing the rest of your drink as you stand up from your spot on the beach.Â
silena claps excitedly and clarisse gives you a big thumbs up as you walk towards the shoreline, where some of the boys are playing a game of football. you donât even need to call out to him, he sees you coming and excuses himself from the game. his cheeks are flushed and heâs panting a bit as he approaches you, pulling you into a quick hug.Â
âyou good?â he asks, giving you a once over.Â
âyeah justâŚcan we talk?â you reply, a hint of uncertainty in your voice.Â
he nods, a worried look crossing his features, âyeah of course. letâs go to the woods.âÂ
you let him lead you to the woods with a firm hold on your hand. the entire time, youâre shaking with nerves, which is strange since youâve never felt this nervous in your life. even the biggest basketball game canât compare to this. he stops in a secluded ring of trees, dropping your hand as he stands in front of you. your palms are so sweaty, you realize, and try to discreetly wipe them on your denim shorts.Â
âyou good? you look like youâre gonna be sick,â he says.Â
âi feel like iâm gonna be sick,â you mumble, and he tilts his head in confusion.Â
before he can say anything, you open your mouth and the word vomit starts. youâre not really sure what youâre saying, but itâs something about your feelings for him and how you need him to know before you leave tomorrow. when you stop, and take a few shaky breaths, you finally meet his gaze. thereâs a softness in his eyes, as he cups your jaw and pulls you close to him.Â
âgods, nike, iâve been waiting to hear that since forever,â he whispers, before planting his lips on yours.Â
you melt into the kiss, arms wrapping around his shoulders to pull him closer. he agrees, wrapping an arm around your waist to pull you flush against his chest as his teeth nip at your bottom lip, begging for entrance. you comply, parting your lips slightly as you let him in. he pulls back, takes a second to breath, before leaving sloppy kisses on your neck. your fingers tug on his hair, and you arch your back further into him.Â
âgods luke,â you say breathlessly.Â
âwe canât all be good at sports, but i know enough to understand you miss one hundred percent of the shots you donât take,â he teases, kissing your chin as you laugh at his words.Â
âyou know who said that?â you ask between laughs.
âyeah, micheal scott,â he answers, and you burst into laughter all over again. Â
âiâll miss you, nike,â he whispers, once youâve both calmed down.Â
âiâll miss you too, luke,â you reply.Â
you gotta getâcha, getâcha head in the game
a year and a half later
âokay everybody shut up! theyâre going by grade,â someone shouts, and the crowd of demigods quiets down as they sit in front of the screen.Â
nobody can remember how they got it, but someone convinced chiron and mr. d to let them set up a screen and projector to watch uconn basketballâs first night. connor and travis claim to have found the items buried away in the big houseâs attic, and while chiron would normally question the truth behind that statement, the excitement of your basketball debut outweighed the repercussions. especially when charlie and the other hephaestus kids found a way to get access to connecticutâs local news station, in long island. Â
âi bet sheâs next,â someone shouts, and everyone listens patiently to the music and the voice of the announcer.Â
âa five-ten freshman guard from long island, new york,â the announcer starts, and everyone starts screaming and cheering, ânumber eleven, yn ln.âÂ
luke isnât sure where the cheers are louder, camp half-blood or gampel pavilion, but he smiles nonetheless as he sees you skip out of the tunnel to the song from high school musical. he watches as you look at the camera, pointing between your eyes and the lens before blowing a kiss. chris shoves him gently, and luke feels himself blushing.Â
âwhyâd she pick number eleven anyways?â one of the younger campers asks.Â
âfor luke, obviously,â another replies, and everyone turns to look at his uconn jersey with an â11â printed on it. Â
