Mom's Minolta (Re-edit 2015 vs 2024)
When I originally took this photo I just thought it was a neat vintage camera and something that would look cool and help me practice my product photography. But as I was re-editing it with my current skills I realized this device captured most of my childhood. My mom took a film photography class in college and this was her camera and she used it for every birthday and Christmas and family get-together. I forgot how special this camera actually is. And I'm really glad that I kept it. In fact, I hope to get it tuned up by the local camera shop and maybe try a little film photography.
I'm also happy to say this camera is built like a tank and is in wonderful condition. In a world where everything is falling victim to enshittification, thankfully the camera industry has mostly avoided that. This Minolta will work great with a little love. My Canon DSLR from 8 years ago still functions perfectly. And if I ever get the Sony Mirrorless that I've been drooling over, it will probably last for decades as well.
I love these vintage two tone cameras and when trying to decide what my next camera will be, I really really wanted to choose the A7CR from Sony.
Such a beautiful throwback to cameras like my mom's.
But there are a bunch of little features and one big feature it doesn't have over its bigger brother. The big one being a slow flash sync speed. Which is hard to explain, but it basically means I would have to work in a blacked out super dark studio if I got this camera. And I had a blacked out super dark studio before and it was just a bit depressing as far as a working space. So I'm probably going to go with the A7RIV or A7RV. Which are kinda ugly cameras.
I don't have the money to get either camera at the moment, so I guess it doesn't really matter. But perhaps they will update the pretty one when I do have the money and upgrade the sync speed.
