One of the moments that most helped Young Me become Now Me was when I was listening to an NPR article about factory automation and how it led to the loss of jobs and the interviewer asked “so, is the answer to turn off the machines” and I realized how utterly unbelievably screwed up that the collective American response to labor-saving technology was that it was saving too much labor and the rational response was to turn them off to literally make people work for work’s sake. Instead of, you know, giving people more free time or higher wages in return for the time and energy saved by these machines.

What do you think the reason is that we fetishize labor itself so much is rather than what it produces, at least here in the States?

The right wing especially just values “number of jobs” more than virtually anything else. One of their top reasons for refusing environmental regulations, military downsizing, prison reform or health reform is always that they’ve figured out someone, somewhere, will have to lose or change a job as a result. They care more about whether some random person will have to hit the classifieds again than if an entire species goes extinct.

A job provides two things, control and surveillance. If you have to work you have no time or energy to resist the system that forces you to work in the first place. Furthermore you become afraid to act our because you’ll lose your conditional stability. Work under capitalism is as much an act of submission as it is a process of production.
