Eukaryotic DNA is strongly bent inside fundamental packaging units: the nucleosomes. It is known that their positions are strongly influenced by the mechanical properties of the underlying DNA sequence. Here we discuss the possibility that these mechanical properties and the concomitant nucleosome positions are not just a side product of the given DNA sequence, e.g. that of the genes, but that a mechanical evolution of DNA molecules might have taken place. We first demonstrate the possibility of multiplexing classical and mechanical genetic information using a computational nucleosome model. In a second step we give evidence for genome-wide multiplexing in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Schizosacharomyces pombe . This suggests that the exact positions of nucleosomes play crucial roles in chromatin function.

Oh, where to start? For one thing, if youâd seen what Iâd seen in the past 6 months you would not be super worried about the Singularity bursting into your living room and owning all your base anytime soon. Second of all, as the author repeatedly states: brains and computers have some similarities, sure, but they are far outstripped by the many differences, most of which are so far not replicable by machine learning or machine behavior. Third of all, thereâs this thing that happens when you get Shiny and Flavorized for a time - and itâs not just entertainers or sports stars or scientists, itâs obviously an equal opportunity delusion that effects business people as well: you start to seriously believe your own bullshit. In fact, you believe in the bullshit of your own bullshit - how much shit could bullshit shit if bullshit could shit shit, I ask you? I realize this is a less fun than the whole âweâre living in the Matrix!â thing and I get where that excitement comes from, I do, but you know what?Â

And *that* is very promising when we think in terms of truly strong AI. âTo the researchers' surprise, the algorithm, which was not programmed to have any prior knowledge of the process, not only learnt to perform the experiment successfully in less than an hour, it â as AI systems are wont to do â did so using techniques humans couldn't possibly have thought of. â

Watching the Watchers
So here we have 7 examples of ways to cover the same story. As posted yesterday, Google has been scraping romance novels and using that text to generate âpoetryâ, or writing in a poetic form, anyway. Note the emotional language used to describe said effort:
Mournful, dramatic, creepy (x 2), haunting, and miserable.
The poetry itself is a bit bland. But the projection? All too human, Iâm afraid. Is it threatening to think that art is not an exclusively human province? Guess it depends what you think art is, or poetry is, and what it should be, and why. I personally think the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, along with quite a bit of gibberish. Wisdom is knowing the difference.Â
