then, it was nicknames.

it was a slow night. you had a few patients that were all part of the loose routine of the ED.

when a trauma case got rolled in, jack was looking for you. he walked alongside the gurney, catching you in his peripheral.

“hey, you’re my best girl, get in here.”

ever since then, you’ve always been his best girl. and jack knows he shouldn’t be biased. he really shouldn't have a favorite coworker, but he can't help it. plus, you are really good at your job.

as time passed, the two of you got more comfortable with each other. you started to tease jack the same way he teased you. you got a little more bored and a little less shy. it became routine. most of the time he would already be at the nurses station when you arrived for your shift. he would find something to tease you about before you could even put your bag in your locker.

the next thing was small touches.

it would be a gentle hand on your back when he passed you in a trauma room, his shoulder would brush against yours when he stood next to you, or he would purposely drag his hand across yours when you handed him an ipad.

you could easily pass it off as innocent touches—but jack wasn't touchy. he was a flirt from a distance.

in all honesty, you didn't know what to do. the work crush that started off as a distraction was turning into something real. you weren't mad about it, per se. jack was a genuine, kind man, and handsome—hot. really hot.

and realistically, the worst thing that could come out of it would be facing HR.

after sitting down with yourself, you made your plan. you were going to catch jack in the parking lot before he left for the day and ask him to get dinner or a drink or whatever nervously left your mouth.

you caught up with jack on the next shift you had together.

"hey," you swallowed back the nervousness in your voice. "um, i wanted to ask you something."

jack stopped beside a car and gently cupped your elbow, pulling you out of the line of cars and closer to him. "if it's work related, i'm off the clock," he smiled.

it wasn't even funny and you laughed.

"it's not really work related," you assured him. you paused, nervously choking on your words. "do you maybe wanna get a drink sometime?"

jack bit his bottom lip, fighting back a stupidly wide smile. "yeah, of course," he nodded. "but lets make it dinner."

"okay," your face felt warmer than usual. "i'll text you and we can figure out a time from there?"

he nodded, again. "sounds good. i'll be waiting."

you huffed out a small laugh and started to step back. "have a good day, dr. abbot."

"you too."

you texted jack right when you got home. the hardest part, actually asking, was over. you texted him a quick hi and said who it was just incase he didn't have your number saved. he responded:
