Sending the birdies flying, Santa Fe southbound #15, the “Texas Chief”, crosses the North Canadian River shortly after departing the Santa Fe’s art deco depot in downtown OKC. The F-unit arrangement was typical, although U28cg or U30cg models from GE were favored for this train as well. It still ran pretty long in these months just before Amtrak, with coaches, a diner, full length dome and two sleepers. I rode it a few times before Amtrak took over and it was classy to the end. And as a side note. to Santa Fe this was a “westbound” train, although the route to the Texas Gulf from Newton, Kansas, definitely took a southward route and even bent southeast before arriving at Galveston!

Under more ordinary circumstances, the cover of our Anniversary Issue—marking 92 years—would feature some version of the monocled dandy Eustace Tilley. This year, as a response to the opening weeks of the Trump Administration, particularly the executive order on immigration, we feature John W. Tomac’s dark, unwelcoming image, “Liberty’s Flameout.”Â
