God. When you were warned about him you did not think he’d be this overt.

‘Shane Maguire comes in most days; he’s the wildlife management officer. He’s full of it most of the time. A cocky smart ass. Don’t let him get to you. He likes to get a rise out of everyone. Give it back to him’ was the briefing Nicolette had given you and it had not been wrong.

He’d strolled in, all camo and smirking with a rifle casually thrown over his shoulder like a complete trope.

“You’re new.” He’d said, grinning ear to ear as he took a seat at the bar with such practiced ease that you assumed it was ‘his spot’. You can call me Shane, sweetheart”

You weren’t a blushing school girl, you could tell a smirking man usually meant he was either hoping he could charm his way into free drinks. Now you didn’t know for sure what his deal was but years of work had given you enough to go on.

“Yes I am, what can I get you to drink” your voice was an attempt at staying polite and the last two words were emphasised because way too often, a smirking man would add on the usually corny line of “you” which you did not want to bother with.

“Beer, thanks.” Shane spoke eyeing you carefully but still far from subtle.

“Nice tattoos. Got any I can’t see.” You said without even looking up at him as you got his beer from the fridge and flipped off the bottle cap.

He tilted his head as if surveying you like he did whatever the hell he tracked out in the park, like he was waiting, cautious. “What’s that sweetheart?”

“You’re staring so I was giving you your line. All you guys have the same line after you stare.”

Shane barked out a laugh at this “Please, I’m much more original”

“Go on then.” You placed his beer down in front of him, deciding to put him on the spot “What’s your line.”

Shane laughed. Oh, you were sassy. He liked that, he liked you already.

“If you’re new, maybe I can take you out, show you the park” Shane offered wasting no time in taking a swig.

“Does that work? I think I almost prefer the weird tattoos line…” you began drying some of the glasses by the side.

Shane shrugged “Sometimes.”

“What happens? Do the ladies see your wildman tent and swoon?”

“Wildman tent?” He eyed you, waiting on your response, his lips tweaking a little at your comment.

“Don’t you live in a tent?” You raised an eyebrow “Or is that sense of style just real commitment to the aesthetic?”

He barked out a laugh “Sometimes.” Shane took another swig of the beer.

“Do you have an answer to a question about you that isn’t sometimes.” You said, now wearing your own smirk.

“Okay…” He laughed and then nodded considering his next response “yeah I’ve got a tent. Mostly for when I’m out tracking something…I have a cabin for the rest of the time. Hot water and electric, the works,” he teased

“Wow, hot water and electric you’re a modern man.” You retorted.

Shane shrugged “The tents good though…does me fine. You don’t like camping?”

You grimaced “I camped once. To a festival. I was twenty two, just graduated and my best friend fucked off to go see some guy she’d just met, I couldn’t find the tent and when I did there was some random girl already in it… crying about her ex who turned out to be the guy my friend had met…so I spent half the night comforting her and the other half trying not to throw up whatever out of date food I bought from the food stall.”

Shane bit back a laugh unsuccessfully. “And that put you off camping sweetheart?” he took another drink, fingers tapping on the glass of the bottle.

“Have you ever eaten half a hot dog before discovering it’s cold, pink and frozen in the middle?” You asked him “and then had to comfort a stranger without dropping your friend completely in it while trying not to throw up?”

“Can’t say I have.” Shane smirked “Sounds disgusting”

“And that’s coming from you…you probably see all sorts of fucked up shit, skinned animals and the like… don’t you.”

“Like you wouldn’t believe…” Shane said leaning in as if the idea of watching him shoot a deer was overly appealing. “You wanna see?”

“Surprisingly…It’s going to be a no on the dead animals.” You let out a laugh a little impressed by the aaudacity.

“What about the camping?” Shane leant over “Yosemite is much better than some dried out field full of stoners and gone off food”

“Oh I’m sure…” You barked out your own laugh “I’ll take a rain check on the camping but if I ever feel the need to reminisce over that…incident, I’ll let you know.”

“For you, sweetheart? The offers always open”

“That’s not a gun.” Shane rolled his eyes “I mean a real gun.”

God he was so fucking annoying, so smug.

This had become a back and forth you’d developed with Maguire and you’d quickly realised he had a smart ass comment for just about fucking anything.

Today he’d been asking you if you’d ever shot a gun and between inviting you into the woods and talking about his guns you had to wonder how often this actually worked for him.

You’d told him you’d shot an air rifle a few times and he’d been insisting it ‘didn’t count.’

Usually you’d eyeroll but sometimes you’d quip back and this time you just couldn’t resist saying something, literally anything to put him on the back foot.

“My ex would disagree.” You then laughed pointedly knowing he’d push for more.

The look on Shane face as he tried to work it out was funny.

“Your ex had an air rifle ? Oh sweetheart, how’s he going to protect a beautiful woman like you with only that…”

“Mmmhm no.” Your lip tweaked up enjoying the confusion. You were stalling, playing for time, seeing if he’d believe you.

“No?” Shane tilted his head to the side “so he didn’t have one…but he’d agree it’s a gun?” He took a swig “I don’t follow”

“No, he’s seen one though.” You explained, savouring Shane’s expression

“And he thinks it’s a gun?” Shane asked, his brow furrowed as he tried to work out what you meant.

“I mean he did when I shot at him with it”

Shane instantly froze, his beer bottle halfway to his lips, his eyes settled on you, carefully assessing if you were fucking with him

“You shot your ex?”

“At.” She said “I missed.” You grinned which elicited a laugh

“What’d he do?” Shane asked, because clearly you were provoked. He leant in “Come on, what’d he do? Put his boots on the table? Not recycle? Leave the dishes in the sink? Smoke in the house?”

You leant over, closer to him and smiled, gesturing for him to come closer.

Shane leant in and the second he did you pulled back.

Oh you were fucking teasing him now.

“Hit on another woman.” You said as you moved back to finish drying a glass.

He grinned ear to ear “Sweetheart I think that’s the hottest thing you’ve ever told me”

You rose an eyebrow “You think it’s hot? Has anyone ever told you you’re a freak, Maguire?”

That tease got a laugh out of him “Plenty of people…but I like it coming from you.” His tone was loaded, flirty, as if he’d like you to call him a freak in a whole different way.

“Well you can have that one for free. The insult. Not the beer. You’re paying for that”

“Gladly.” Shane dropped a $20 into the tip jar and winked “You thought anymore about my offer?”

“Is that a tip or are you trying to pay me to come camp with you?”

“Either. Why? Is it working?” He winked.

“You’re the one that’s been drinking not me” you rolled your eyes and headed back into the stock room

“I’m going to marry her.” Shane remarked to one of the rangers as they took a seat outside next to a fire pit. “She is going to be my wife.”

“Good luck Maguire, she’s already sick of you.” Mitchell, the ranger, rose an eyebrow “plus I don’t think she wants to live in a tent in the middle of the park.”

“I have a cabin.” Shane rolled his eyes. “I’ll do it nice. Get some…blankets or flowers…whatever women like”

“Wow, you sure know what ladies want.”

“More than you do Mitchell.” Shane shoved the other man casually

“I heard it was that he took money from her to kill the guy that killed the Turners son…” One of the barmen Robbie said casually.

Robbie was the biggest gossip you had ever met and currently he was in, what he probably thought was, a hushed debate with Nicolette, one of the waitresses over exactly why Kyle Turner, who you’d not met yet, seemed to hate Shane so much.

“You reckon it was good money?” You asked folding your arms over your chest as an attempt to join in.

“What?” Nicolettes head whipped up from her glass.

“Do you reckon it was good money?” You repeated “I’ve never met anyone who does hits before and the only other way I’m going to find out is by hiring one myself, which I’m not about to do.”

Robbie laughed out loud. “Dunno but that’s one to ask Maguire next time he shows up. He likes you he’d probably give you a discount.”

You rolled your eyes “He likes me because I’ve got an ass and access to the beer”

“Whatever, we all have bets on when you and him…”

Nicolette had clearly heard enough “Robbie! Enough! Back to work!”

Your colleague gave you a winning smile before heading off

Little did you know it would be Kyle Turner who showed up first having heard Shane Maguire had taken a liking to you.

You could tell he had good intentions. Looking out for the new person, trying to warn you of what he perceived as dangerous but to you it had just come across as two men trying to outdo each other.

He’d came in all brooding and telling you Maguire wasn’t to be messed with that he was involved with bad people and to ‘trust him, his wife had a run in with him a few years back.’ in a way that made you think Robbie’s speculation, even though dramatic was probably along the right lines.

You’d nodded politely. “Thank you for letting me know but until Maguire does anything to me personally, I’ll reserve my judgement.”

“I don’t think you understand the seriousness of what I’m saying”. Turners brow furrowed “He’s got weapons, way too many for one man, he sells a lot of…”

“I do, I understand.” You said cut across him wiping down another glass “I assume his multiple weapons are a collection”

“Not how he keeps them” He added “Crates of ‘em”

“Is that illegal?” You asked

“It could be.” Turner had leant forward “People who associate with him usually end up in all kinds of shit.”

“Look I get it he’s kind of a…” you’d started

“Asperous?” Turner suggested

“I was going for kind of an asshole but if that means the same thing sure” you said “but look, you can’t turn Maguire in because if you do, your wife goes to jail too…” You continued wiping the bar “Nothing will come of this so is it not better to just ignore it…or at least each other”

Kyle Turner did not smile at your joke.

“Just stay away from him. Trust me”

God this guy would not let up.

“You’re very relaxed given the information I’ve told you.”

You laughed “Or I’m not surprised given I’ve met Maguire.”

Turner folded his arms over his chest. “I’m just saying…if he bothers you or you hear about him bothering anyone else…” the man slid a contact number across the bar “let me know and I’ll talk to him”

You let out an exhale and tucked the number under the bar “Okay. Thank you for your concern, but I promise I’ll be fine.”

Kyle Turner gave you the once over before, clearly unsure of what to make of you before leaving the bar, meeting the man himself Shane Maguire at the door.

Both men sized each other up before Shane gave Kyle a shit eating grin with a sarcastic ‘Afternoon Turner’ before nudging him as he entered before taking his seat down the other side of the bar eyeballed Turner as he left.

“What did Captain America want?”

You snorted at his petty jibe “To talk about you actually.”

“Bad things I hope” Shane winked and you rolled your eyes.

“Something about you having a run in with his wife.” You shrugged “Robbie’s got ideas,”

“Robbie talks too much…” Shane’s tone was pretty nonplussed, but you couldn’t tell if this was just Shane being himself or if he actually was unbothered by gossip.

You hummed “I dunno…I think he’s on to something…”

“…I’d love to hear ‘em…” Shane nodded at the bar in front of him as if asking for you to approach. “What’s the gossip…”

You came over and stood in front of him, entertaining him for once and lent in. “Turner’s wife paid you for a hit.”

Shane bit his lip, attempting to trace any micro expressions on your face as he met you by leaning in himself “You believe him?”

His voice was low. Almost a whisper but not quite. The bar was too quiet for people to actually overhear. Besides Shane, the nearest patron was several seats over and also way too old to hear whispered conversations.

“Go on sweetheart, what if I did…”

“Sounds like something that’s got nothing do to with me.”

“Smart woman.” Shane leant back in his chair “You don’t wanna know what happened though? You’re either remarkably non-nosey or incredibly trusting or…”

“Or I just think you and Turner hate each other and I shouldn’t get involved in whatever dick measuring context you and Kyle Turner have…whatever’s going on I’m guessing you’ve had multiple run ins.”

“Wouldn’t you like to know.” He licked his lip, cleaning the residue from the beer off of them.

“Not enough. Clearly.” You said

“Mines is definitely bigger by the way.” Shane smirked tilting his head at you after a minute as if that was the most pressing matter and then he added “My dick” like it wasn’t obvious

“You seem sure.” You snorted “Do you and Turner actually measure dicks? Cause I was being hyperbolic.”

“I can show you if you like?”

“Wow.” You laughed “That’s…just wow”

“I know it’s not breakfast time but…”

You put the plate in front of Shane.

This had become a habit.

Ever since one day when Shane had come in, hungry after a four day mission tracking an injured deer, he’d ordered some bar food and you’d found the cupboard empty so offered to go off menu and ever since then he’d been requesting “specials”.

Today It was a breakfast muffin.

Still warm and lightly toasted, Sausage then a small folded omelette then bacon. Neat and well presented and far from what Shane usually ate

“It’s not poisoned is it?” Shane picked it up and lifted the lid of the muffin as if he was expecting to find some rat poison smeared into the butter.

“No” you said “Unfortunately not, we’re all out of poison, you’ll have to make do with sausage, omelette and bacon. I can spit in it if you like.”

Shane grinned ear to ear and you could just see the innuendo sitting on his tongue

“Do not.” You pointed “make a dirty joke. Eat your breakfast muffin and accept the nice gesture or I’ll put it in the fridge and microwave it for Turner later”

Shane frowned “Ah, no you can’t do that darling, it’s mine”

Your arms folded “Then eat it and say thank you. Do not make a joke.”

He smiled again. More genuinely this time “Thanks sweetheart” he said before taking a bite, letting you watch him.

“Holy shit” Shane let out a low whistle as he swallow. “That’s good. Really really good” he took another bite

“You made this? Like made it, made it?”

You leant against the bar “Yeah, believe it or not some of us live on things that aren’t cold microwaved burgers.”

Shane rolled his eyes “I’m complimenting you, sweetheart….”

“Good” you said “You can be my guinea pig for this too”

And with that you dropped a bag on the table full of an assortment of brown and yellow pieces diced up and in a ziplock.

“What’s that?”

“Tree bark.” You quipped with an eyebrow raise before smiling “It’s trail mix. Figured you might like it.”

“Yeah I know it’s trail mix but I mean what’s with all the home cooked, authentic stuff. You starting a cafe?” Shane asked

“Not exactly…” You laughed and Shane took another bite of the sandwich

“You should I mean. This is like what the fifth time I’ve been in here and not been served a microwaved meal or a flat grilled cheese.”

“I’m just trying to improve the food options with simple but delicious food. I’m no expert, just figured it’s better options than what was on there” you said “so I’m glad it’s working”

“You should open a cafe…”

You rose an eyebrow “Are you messing with me”

“I’m serious.” A rare earnest look crossed Shane’s face and he seemed genuinely sincere “Sweetheart, this would sell out, there’s a vacant lot at a trail stop, it’s not far from my cabin…Way more traffic and options than ‘bar food’ like here…I can take you out there…”

“I think you might just wanna keep me around”

“Oh I do but now it’s for the food as well as your attitude.”

Shane had finally talked you into coming to his cabin.

It had been raining, the type of rain that seems like the skies have opened type of rain and you’d… walked to the bar that morning.

Shane had offered you a lift and then in turn suggested stopping in at his as you were soaked through.

“You’re staring.” You commented as you dried off your hair with a towel he’d left out on a chair for you

You rolled your eyes, something you did a lot in Shane’s presence “Are you always this romantic?”

You turned around, slipped off the tank top and into the spare t shirt he’d left you. It smelt just like him, which you found only comforting.

“I live in a cabin in the woods, sweetheart, you think I’m coming across many dateable women?” Shane kept his eyes on you, unashamed of being called out and enjoying the maybe five seconds of you in your bra that he saw even if it was from the back

“Dunno you might happen upon a lost hiker…” you said turning back around

“You make me sound like a serial killer” Shane rose an eyebrow and took a sip of beer. “that what you think I do all day?”

“No, you occasionally sort out problem animals, drink cheapo beer, shoot guns…and like I said before compare dicks with Kyle Turner”

You came and sat next to him and cracked open a can of Diet Coke.

He shook his head laughing dryly as he did “You really are something else” but after a moment his tone dropped, much more serious “did you really shoot your ex husband?”

“Why’d you think he’s my ex?”

“You divorced?”

“No he’s dead.”

Shane let out a bark of laughter still not knowing if you were messing with him or not; and probably against his better judgment, he realised he didn’t care. All he took from that was whatever man had been in your life now wasn’t.
